The Waterline
Remember the association has a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/Woodbeck-Chain-of-Lakes-
Association that will keep you up to date on current events. I’m still trying to figure out how everyone can
post to the wall so bear with me when trying to upload photos and such.
I would like to take a second to thank all of you who get involved with the association, without your
dedication the quality of life on our lakes would not be the same. Also a big thank you to all who attended
the winter party that Christine and I hosted at Candlestone last month, I hope everyone who attended
had a good time.
Before I moved here, I lived in a quiet neighborhood in Cedar Springs. I rarely spoke with my neighbors
and never waved at them driving down the road. Now I can’t sit on my deck or drive down the road
without waving or saying Hi to someone. You know it’s easy to take where we live for granted, so I would
just like to remind you all of how blessed we are to live in this community and I, for one, am thankful for
all my neighbors’ waves!
There are a lot of fun things planned for this summer already and this year we plan to add an association
golf outing so stay tuned for that one!
Stay safe everyone and I’ll see you on the water when the ice melts!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT…
Winter Greetings Everyone!
I do hope that those of you who enjoy the cold weather are getting out
and making the most of it. Those of us who prefer summer are
patiently waiting for this nasty white stuff to be gone and we can get
back on the water!

IMPORTANT…NEW CAMP CONCORDIA BOAT LAUNCHING POLICY-
PLEASE READ!
Hello Everyone.
Noted below is a copy of Camp Concordia’s new policy regarding the use of their
boat launch.
The Association has worked closely with the camp to come to an agreement on
how to keep the ramp accessible while maintaining a certain measure of security
for the camp.
In the past, lake property owners have enjoyed unrestricted access to the camp.
As most things change, so has the operational liability the camp is now facing.
With new regulation in place the camp has had to limit access at certain times.
With this in mind, please follow the new rules in place.
Remember, Camp Concordia is private property and they are being kind enough to
let paid association member’s use their ramp so please be a considerate neighbor
when using their property. So if you have not paid your 2015 membership dues,
and use Camp Concordia’s boat launch ramp, please do so immediately. You will
not be able to launch your boat if you have not paid.
Best Regards and enjoy the summer my friends.
Tom “Uncle Tom” Stressman WCLA President

Lower Level Conf Rm (entrance thru back parking lot)
Tangy Tomato Brisket
Recipe courtesy of Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman)
Total Time: 7 hr 10 min
Cook: 7 hr
Yield: 8 servings – Level: Easy
Ingredients
One 5- to 8-pound beef brisket, trimmed of all fat (the
butcher can do this for you!)
One 24-ounce bottle ketchup or chilli sauce
1 package dry onion soup mix
Several dashes hot sauce
Directions
Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F.
Place the brisket in an oven-safe pan. Combine the
ketchup and soup mix in a bowl, and then stir it around
to mix. Pour in 1 cup water and stir to combine. (You
can add more water if needed!)
Pour the sauce all over the brisket, and then flip the
brisket over to coat the other side. Now just cover the
pan with foil and roast in the oven for 6 to 7 hours.
Remove the pan from the oven and test the brisket to
make sure it's fork-tender. The brisket should fall apart
if you look at it! Slice the brisket into thin strips, then
return the beef to the sauce and keep it warm until
you're ready to serve.

Reminder: Kindy Boat Launch Procedures
In respect for the property of the lot owners near the WCLA Kindy Road boat launch, your Board of
Directors discussed a preferred and safe procedure to launch larger boats to avoid any possible
damage to the private property along Kindy Road. The following procedure was developed:
Trailered watercraft less than 18 feet long can be driven down to the Kindy boat launch and,
using a driveway at the end of Kindy Road, the vehicle and trailer can be turned around to
back down the boat launch. (Care should be taken when using a private driveway to avoid
damage to the property.)
Watercraft that is 18 feet or longer (primarily pontoon boats) should be backed down Kindy
Road from the intersection of Kindy Road and Point Drive to the launch area. (Private
driveways at the end of Kindy Road should not be used to turn the vehicle and boat trailer
around as there is insufficient room to maneuver safely!)
A sign reading “LAUNCH OF BOATS OVER 18 FT SHOULD BE BACKED DOWN TO THE
LAUNCH AREA FROM HERE” will be displayed at the intersection of Kindy Road and Point
Drive.
If any damage to Kindy Road private property is accidently incurred during the process of
launching a watercraft, the owner of the watercraft is responsible for all damages and should
immediately advise the property owner of the accident.
Compliance with these procedures would be greatly appreciated.

Written and pictures by Sara Murray, daughter of Jay & Arlene Vanbruggan, Horseshoe Lake
In the late winter/ early spring of 1963 my grandparents, John and Johanna Van Bruggen, purchased a small
cottage on the Shore of Horseshoe Lake. They named it Ja-Jo-De after their three sons; Jay, John, and Dean. At
the time the toilet was in a separate room and you had to walk across the patio to get there. I have seen
pictures of one of my first baby baths in the basin under the hand pump on the patio and I remember as a
young child being afraid to go to the bathroom at night because of the peep frogs on the patio. Over the years
there have been many wonderful memories of swimming with my brother and cousins in the lake, rainy
afternoon games of Chinese checkers with my grandfather, and special Dutch treats cooked up by my
grandmother. Time has many things changed at the cottage, my grandparents built on a kitchen and included
the bathroom, the front porch was remodeled and enclosed as a sun room, Furniture has come and gone, but
one thing that remains is family.
As my Grandparents aged their sons took a bigger and bigger role in the cottage until finally my parents, Jay
and Arlene, became the primary vacationers. As my grandparents left their marks on the cottage so did my
parents with planting new trees and my mother’s beautiful gardens. A little more than a year ago my mother
passed leaving the cottage under the care of my father, brother, and I.
I have celebrated milestones and joys on Horseshoe Lake as well as the occasional heartbreak. Because the
cottage is a summer home only it has always represented peace and separation from everyday life. Now as I
enter middle age my view of the cottage is changing as well. I am hoping that rather than a place separated
from everyday life it can become the place where my husband and I can retire and spend our lives. I am hoping
that eventually I can watch autumn, winter, and spring as it brings its changes to the lake I love.
