NOW YOU KNOW Herman McKinney
Living in Vancouver, Washington for a time before settling in Seattle in 1967, Herman
McKinney was star halfback for the University of Oregon varsity football team. Changing his major to social work, he earned his master’s
degree from the University of Washington and worked as assistant dean recruiting hundreds
of black undergraduates urging them to complete their graduate work at the school.
As McKinney and his wife opened a successful commercial cleaning business, he along with
Ernie Dunston, Larry Gossett and several other prominent African American men
founded the Breakfast Group in 1976. The association of African-American male
professionals provides mentorship to young black males to this day.
As a community advocate, McKinney helped lead a protest of 8,000 people to the Seattle
Chamber of Commerce calling on the business community to invest in the poorer
neighborhoods of Seattle. He gained a reputation for his efforts to reduce racial
tensions and as a direct result of the protest, was hired by the Chamber to lead the new
Urban Enterprise Center. McKinney held the post from 1993 to 2006.
He is credited with sponsoring public and private forums on race around the city—
conversations that are still being referenced today. He also brokered a deal between the
Washington State Employment Security Department and over 900 companies helping thousands low-income individuals gain jobs.
The initiative placed more than 71,000 people into the workforce over a 10 year period and
added $60 million into the local economy. Sadly, McKinney passed away in April 2014.
