This results in a 1.5 per cent tax increase over 2018. The 2019 budget demonstrates Leduc County’s commitment to providing efficient and effective services in the region and allows us the flexibil- ity to make decisions that will meet the changing needs of our customers. Our council recognizes that many residents and businesses are still strug- gling as a result of the economic downturn, and by keeping tax increases to a minimum, we hope to support our ratepayers the best we can. - Mayor Tanni Doblanko 2019 capital budget highlights $9.1 million for the annual road-surfacing program; this includes $1 million for the Rural Road Initia- tives program $1.2 million for capital equipment and vehicle pur- chases for protective services $800,000 for bridge rehabilitation $640,000 for upgrades to Nisku and New Sarepta bulk water stations 2019 operating budget highlights $1.1 million for parks and recreation, including a $500,000 contribution to the Beaumont Aqua-Fit Centre expansion $5 million for road maintenance projects, which in- cludes $3.4 million for the annual gravelling pro- gram 2019 tax rates The 1.5 per cent tax increase results in minimal tax increases for most land owners. Approximately 84 per cent of Leduc County property owners can ex- pect a property tax increase of less than $100 over 2018. The Thorsby 4-H Multi Club is moving towards the final stretch of another great year.

The beef project members had a calf tour day originally scheduled for February 10, but it had to be postponed due to the cold winter weath-er. So we had it on March 3. It was still a cold day but it was cool to see each other’s calves.

Shortly after, on March 12 the members of the club went to Rabbit Hill for a fun night of skiing and snowboarding.

Moving on to April, members with a beef pro-ject had a mini show and clipping day on April 7. After practicing for the show day, which is on May 6, we had a wiener roast and members gave their calves a much needed haircut. The cleaver members then had a day on April 20 to bring their baby calves and practice leading and showing them for their show day, also on May 6.

Upcoming Events for the 4-H members are:

Highway Cleanup on May 4 for the horse and pheasant project members.

Then on May 6, there is the Show Day and Sale for the beef project and cleaver members. The opening ceremonies are at 11:15 am with the show to follow and the sale starts at 5:30 pm.

The horse project members will be attending the District Horse Show on June 8.

And lastly, the club will have its Windup and Awards Banquet on June 27.

That will wrap up the year for the club.

Warburg School hosted “Breathe Smart”, a presentation from the Alberta Lung Association, for Grades 6-12 on Thursday, April 26th. Our students were shown and al-lowed to touch (with gloves) pig lungs that were healthy and a set that were diseased. This very graphic dis-play resonated with students and hopefully they will now visualize the dire consequence on their lungs from un-healthy habits, such as smoking and vaping. (Pictured top right)

The Alberta Lung Association made contact with our school to schedule the presentation due to the philan-thropic work of students, Hannah Lange, Mya Macpher-son and Hayley Johnson. The trio worked hard this win-ter on a Genius Hour project to raise awareness and funds for the Lung Association. The Lung Association presented the girls with certificates and swag for being Lung Champions. (Pictured bottom right)

Farm Safety was the topic of the day on April 25th for our elementary classes. As many of our families live and work on farms, it is imperative for our students to recognize the hazards and safety skills necessary for their rural lifestyle. This annual presentation is always appreciated and we encourage parents to ask their stu-dent what they learned from the Farm Safety lady!

May 2nd we welcomed Concrete Theatre back to our school for a theatrical performance for our high school students. Concrete Theatre focuses on social issues af-fecting students and creates performances to educate and promote deeper thinking and positive choices.

May 16th our high school students will receive informa-tion on Dual Credit Programs during a special assembly. The BGRS Dual Credit Programs are an exceptional op-portunity for our senior students to receive credits to-ward post secondary while still in high school! Contact Mrs. Hodges for more information.

Senior High students presented their experience of Ele-vate Aviation at our Black Gold Regional School Board meeting in April. The Elevate Aviation program has introduced a whole new realm of career opportunities to explore for our Warburg students within the Edmonton International Airport area.

Well the election is over and Albertans have spoken!

Albertans voted in droves, the largest voter turnout since the 1930’s. Of the 37, 099 eligible voters in the Dray-ton Valley-Devon constituency 25,437 people voted, that was a 68.9% voter turnout. The new Legislature will have two political parties. The United Conservative Party elected 63 MLA’s to form a majority government and the NDP elected 24 MLA’s making them the Official Opposition. I am very humbled that the constituents of Drayton Valley-Devon elected myself as one of the 63 United Conservative MLA’s. Thank you!

Those are the results but I want to take the opportun-ity to thank all of the candidates that ran in the Drayton Valley-Devon constituency. Elections can only happen when citizens put their names forward as candidates and commit to offering the people political choice. Each one of the candidates should be congratulated for the efforts they put forward as they placed their vision of Al-berta before the people. I would also like to thank all of the constituents that exercised their franchise regard-less of who they voted for. Albertans clearly voted for change this election. They voted for an Alberta where the primary objective of the government must be to control government spending and rebuild the economy. Jobs, Pipelines and the economy were the primary elec-tion issues for Albertans and as a member of the gov-ernment I will do my best to ensure that we rebuild this economy, provide the jobs needed by Albertans and get our oil and gas to tidewater. This will not be an easy!

Over the last four years the government raised taxes and still spent in such a way as to create a yearly deficit of $8-10 Billion dollars. We now have a $60 billion dollar debt and 3 billion dollar yearly interest payments to go along with it. This will have to be addressed while at the same time we are going to have lower taxes and reduce regulatory red tape in order to attract the foreign capital needed to grow the economy. During the election we pledged to move quickly should we be elected into gov-ernment and that is exactly what we are going to do.

MLA’s will be sworn in to office on May 21st and the Speech from the Throne will occur the next day on May 22nd to start the newest session of the Legislature. The election is over and it is now time to roll up our sleeves and start turning political vision into fiscal reality and start rebuilding the Alberta economy.

MLA REPORTfrom The Office of MLA Mark Smith, Member of the Legislative Assembly

for Drayton Valley - Devon

Leduc County Hawkweed ProgramOrange, Meadow and Mouse-Ear hawkweeds are classified as prohibited noxious weeds under the Alberta Weed Control Act. These weeds have the ability to spread rapidly and completely overtake established ecosystems. Once established, these weeds are extremely hard to control and remove from properties.

What Leduc County is doing:Leduc County is taking a proactive approach by strategically targeting infestations of hawkweed less than five acres. Leduc County has a Hawkweed Spraying Program to give landowners an additional option in stopping the spread of these highly invasive weeds. The program covers all invasive species of hawkweed, including:

What you need to know about hawkweed:• It’s a perennial weed that has very high seed production and the ability to reproduce through lateral

stolons or rhizomes.

• Most species of hawkweed are characterized by low rosette basal leaves with a single stem growing up to 70cm and produces orange or yellow flowers that will bloom several times a year.

• Control options are limited. It’s recommended you use herbicides registered for use on Hieracium spp./hawkweeds or hand digging where all stolons and roots can be removed.

• If you are grazing livestock, hawkweed will decrease the amount and quality of grass available and will thrive in over-grazed areas.

For more information about the Hawkweed Program, please visit www.leduc-county.com/services/weed-control or contact Leduc County Agricultural Services at 780-955-4593.
