THE WALLINGTON WEEK
26 February 2018 - Issue 20
Message from the Head Teacher
Dear Parents and Carers Hopefully we have now seen the last of the snow and we can all return to some degree of normality.
We are very lucky as a school to have such a hardworking and successful ‘Parents and Friends Association’ (PFA) who run numerous events in order to raise funds for the school. Events have included the Christmas Fayre, Years 7 to 8 discos as well as quiz nights and of course the New Year 7 Barbeque in the summer. The PFA also support the school in other ways, such as providing teas and coffees at Parents’ Evenings, sorting out lost property and providing burgers for the Sixth Form social. So firstly this is an opportunity to thank Nadia, Chair of the PFA and her team for all their fantastic work. However this is also an opportunity to make a plea for parents from across all year groups to offer their help to the PFA. Any offer of support is welcome, even if you can only turn up to help with one event; it makes a big difference and means that Nadia doesn’t always have to rely on a few, die hard members of the PFA for everything. So if you are able to give some of your time, please email Nadia at [email protected]; it is much appreciated. We held our second NWET Conference just after half-term with all staff from Wallington and Nonsuch. The main
focus of the day was mental health and wellbeing and we were lucky to be joined by Place2be, the Uk’s leading
mental health charity who work with a large number of schools to support the emotional well-being of students,
families, teachers and school staff. As a result of this day, a number of staff from both schools are now completing
training to be Mental Health Champions which aims to improve understanding of children’s emotional wellbeing
and how best to support young people.
Finally, over the last few weeks, Year 10 have been involved in the First Give programme as part of their PSHCE
lessons. The programme encourages member students to identify social issues in their area and engage with local
charities that address them and last week, seven teams, one from each Year 10 form, had the opportunity to
compete for £1,000 of grant money for their chosen charity. Congratulations to all who took part and particularly
to the winners representing ‘stem4’, a teenage mental health charity. Thank you to Miss Telford for organising this
as part of our PSHCE programme.
Have a great week.

Jack Petchey Awards
It was a delight to attend the Jack Petchey awards at the Epsom Playhouse on Monday night. The evening celebrated the achievements of award winners from all Sutton schools and our students did us proud as always. Superintendent Mark Lawrence of Sutton Police presented the awards and we enjoyed performances from Sutton students including a jazz band and solo violinist from Nonsuch High School for Girls.
Lakshaya 8 Bronte attended to collect her award for outstanding contributions to the school council, her money was spent on some of the costumes for our Sister Act production earlier this term. Our NWET musician of the year, Ikjote 10 Seacole was there too and she is responsible for the newly monogrammed gospel choir uniforms. Having bought additional resources for the school library, Melane 9 Pankhurst and Gousela 11 Curie also proudly received their award medallion. Megan 8 Pankhurst, our courage winner in November and Tayibbah 7 Curie, our compassion winner in October were there to receive their awards too. Their money is yet to be spent but will also help the library as well as the PE department.
Well done to all our 2017 Jack Petchey award winners – I hope that we’ll have more fantastic achievements to celebrate this time next year.
Ella (Year 13)
Ella recently competed (for her 8th consecutive year) at the Surrey County Swimming Championships held during January and February over several weekends as Surrey Sports Park, Guildford, London Aquatic Centre and Crystal Palace.
Ella has again enjoyed competing for her club South Croydon SC. Ella returned with 2 golds, 2 silvers and 4 bronze medals over the course of the championships and was particularly pleased with her result in the 800m freestyle which took place at LAC in Stratford (the Olympic Pool) where she again became Surrey Champion in the 17+ age group in a new PB of 9.22.12 (an amazing 7+ second personal best). She won Silvers with a new PB in the 400 Individual Medley as well as the 400m free in a time around her PB as well as Bronze Medals in the 200 Back, 50 Back (PB) and 50 Free. Ella was also a member of the South Croydon SC 4 x 200m Free Open Ladies Relay Team who also became Surrey Champions the best result ever for her club.

A Future in Food
To most people when they hear the concept of Food Science and Nutrition as a degree it creates an assumption that the
individual is training to become a chef and despite that being an exciting path to go down, the food industry is one that is full
of opportunities that most consumers turn a blind eye to.
Mrs Beales has provided our class with excellent opportunities to find out more about the Food Industry, including talks from
previous Food Science students from the University of Reading and Food Technologists in the gel and suspension industry.
This showed us the extent of job diversity which extends from buyers that go out sourcing alternative ingredients in overseas
countries to jobs within the marketing industry designing packaging for new products. We are all interested in pursuing jobs
within this industry as it constantly changes with consumer preferences and at the end of the day, everyone will always need
to eat.
Looking forward we all wish to go to university to study either Food Science or combined Food Science and Nutrition. Our
choices are limited given the niche nature of this course meaning that Maria, Kanika, Amelia and I are all looking to travel to
the University of Leeds studying Food Science whilst Sufia is aiming to go to the University of Middlesex to do Nutrition and
Food Science. The drive behind us studying these courses is mainly the fact that the subject is broad ranging from researching
molecular biology, ethical concerns such as reducing food wastage and malnutrition [which still exists in many countries]
Hopefully this has enlightened you to the creative nature of the subject and who knows, 5 years down the line after
graduation; you could all be putting products into your basket from the supermarket that we have developed ourselves.

Senior Prefect Team
We are delighted to introduce our new Senior Prefect Team and have included their main area of responsibility. You will no
doubt be meeting them as they help out with the many events around the school. They will be in post for the next year and
we wish them the very best.

WHSG Carnatic Orchestra
On Saturday 10 February, WHSG's Carnatic Orchestra performed at a musical festival, held at The Archbishop Lanfrac Academy. The ten WHSG students are Aarani (10 Pankhurst), Harini (11 Pankhurst), Kirthana and Vaahine (11 Seacole), Queenshicka (11 Sharman), Suruthy (11 Curie), Visharli (9 Sharman), Subicsha (9 Sharman), Abarna (7 Pankhurst), Sutapi (8 Athena). They were also accompanied by Roshini from Nonsuch School. They performed very well and received huge praises from fellow artists and other musicians.
WHSG Carnatic Orchestra was the first group to represent a school at this music festival, as well as it being their first public performance outside of school.

Y11 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition
We were very proud of all our Y11 Food students who produced fabulous practical work for their three hour exam.
All of the photographs will be displayed very soon on our food board but here are a few impressive examples to whet your
appetite. All dishes were made entirely from scratch, for example home-made pasta, pastries, bread dough and ice-cream.
Well done to all of our amazing students.
