June/July 2010

Nothing has more influence on our culture quite like the movies. They are a fantastical place of escape, entertainment, challenge and tension. They also provide a great opportunity to ask the tough questions. For the next eight weeks, we will ask those hard questions, as well as, review recent movies of the past year and “peel back the curtain,” so to speak, to see what truths can be

uncovered and their implications in our own lives.

It’s true that G-d speaks in great winds and whispers, so let’s listen this month to learn what can be revealed by a trip to the movies. We’ll feature clips from a new film each week and transform it into a teaching opportunity. Also join us on Thursday evening Exploration as we enjoy the

summertime with an outdoor film in the park (a.k.a. the Emmaus courtyard).

So let’s have fun with this series while we continue Growing Up as mature Christians. The only question left is...who’s bringing the popcorn? (Pastor J is bringing the JuJu Bees!)

Led by Jeremy Tyler and Dr. Eddie, the men of Emmaus joyfully and willingly collaborated to make Mothering Day 2010 a morning to remember. We may not all have wives or children but we all have had mothers that endured the stress and pain of bringing us into the world. For this reason our commitment was strong and unwavering.

The Lord indeed provides you with all you need. Our culinary leader, Ricky London, was undaunted by the task of fulfilling the dietary needs of over 250 guests. Our entertainment, greeters, valet, kitchen, serving and custodial teams were not to be out done by each other. Our master griller (AKA “Juice

Man”) and assistants vowed to convert vegetarians back to carnivores, and rumor has it, they did. Our Pastor J. provided us with the supervision and spiritual sustenance just at the right times.

If you ask me (the designated greeter, photographer, videographer-on-the move), I’ll tell you we did alright. Only the mothers of Emmaus can account for how the men truly did, but judging from the almost 200 snapshots and 30 minutes of video I’ve reviewed…, we did Alllllllllllright!

Praise God.

Ephesians 4:11-16 NIV11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Spiritually mature Christians demonstrate the following disciplines...

Expressions of Gratitude from the Members...

Dear Emmaus Family!

Thank you so much again for

your outpouring of love on

behalf of my family in the loss

of Dad.

Gratefully acknowledging and

thanking you for your kind

expression of sympathy.

God bless you all!Howard & Jo-Ann Hunigan

My heart is overwhelmed with gratitude as I reflect on the journey toward my graduation and the wonderful celebration that was held in my honor on Sunday, May 16th. Indeed, I cannot thank G-d enough for not only giving me the wisdom, strength, favor and grace to finish that nearly 250 page thesis-project, but I am thankful for the support and well-wishes from so many members of our Family during this last year. It would not have been possible without the gracious support of Pastor James and the Elders, the faithfulness of the Team, and the countless friends who scribed, re-read, edited and encouraged. Indeed, your prayers and cards spurred me on to the grand event called commencement. Thanks Emmaus for sharing in my dreams. And please know that while I am thrilled to have earned this Doctor of Ministry Degree (D.Min), it is my greatest privilege to be called your pastor. I hope and pray that as we continue to journey together that our individual stories will produce a symphony of praise to the G-d who has called us together.
