BY JaY BOBBIN If one were to pose Joey Tribbiani’s trademark question – “How you doin’?” – to Matt LeBlanc these days, the response would have to be, “Pretty good.”

Not long after finishing work his Showtime series “Episodes” (with the fifth and final season being shown next year), the “Friends” alum not only has re-upped to host the next two seasons of the BBC and BBC america car show “Top Gear,” he’s returning to primetime sitcom work.

Premiering Monday, Oct. 24, CBS’ “Man With a Plan” casts him as a contractor who becomes a Mr. Mom when his wife (former “Yes, Dear” co-star Liza Snyder) goes back to work. Overwhelmed at first, he eventually comes up with a plan to handle their three children (Grace Kaufman, Matthew McCann, Hala Finley), sometimes with the attempted help of his brother and business partner (“Saturday Night Live” and “Weeds” veteran Kevin Nealon).

LeBlanc is in familiar hands as “Man With a Plan” starts, since he’s directed by television-comedy legend James Burrows, who also guided “Friends” episodes including the very first one. The actor says he wanted to return to that format “because I have a family, and the hours are shorter. I like the sort of work week on a multicam (multi-camera comedy). You rehearse all week, then you shoot in front of an audience, like a play. It’s like being part of an ensemble theater company.”

The concept by married series creators and executive producers Jackie and Jeff Filgo (“That ‘70s Show”) appealed to LeBlanc from the start. “We had in common that we wanted to do something in the same sort of arena,” he says, “a family show. I felt like I’m not getting any younger, and I am a parent, so I wanted to explore what that would be like as a character. and they wrote a great script, and I responded to it. and then we started talking more, and here we are.”

Jackie Filgo explains the show is based on her and her husband’s “personal experience from last year. We have always worked together, and we took the year off and were with our kids 24/7 for the first time ever ... and got to see sort of the real ins and outs of parenting. and we were at dinner one night, and our daughter just picked up a handful of mashed potatoes and started eating it like an ice-cream cone, and we realized perhaps some things had fallen through the cracks. and we might have some work to do.”

“It became really clear,” adds Jeff Filgo, “when you’re only seeing your kids at the edges of the day, you’re just getting the greatest hits. and when you’re with them all the time, you’re getting the deep album cuts. With a drum solo.”

Being in the CBS lineup puts Le Blanc back in the company of network chief Leslie Moonves, who developed “Friends” while an executive at Warner Bros. Television, as well as Matthew Perry – Chandler to LeBlanc’s Joey on that show – whose current reboot of “The Odd Couple” airs an hour later on Mondays.

“They are one stage away,” LeBlanc reports of Perry’s series. “I love that guy. I love all five of those people. We spent a lot of time together. I mean, I could not see him for five years – and then, put me in a room with him, and it will be like I saw him yesterday. We still have this shorthand with one another. It’s amazing, really. Ten years in a building with no windows, with the door locked? We got to know each other pretty well.”

of ‘Westworld’ Sunday on HBO

CELEBRITY

How did you create your character of theme park chief Robert Ford on HBO’s “Westworld”?I just learned the lines and showed up. It’s all on the page. You don’t have to create anything. a lot of actors would disagree with my idea but I think all the knowledge you need is in the script. and whoever wrote the script, whether it’s Jonah Nolan or Tennessee Williams or Shakespeare or Sophocles, all the information you need is in there and is in the text. You can interpret it in any way you want. That’s the freedom for the actor. and if a director may oppose that and say, ‘Well, I don’t think that’s going to work.’ ‘OK, let’s try another way.’ But my job is to interpret what my idea of the personality is that I’m playing.

So you don’t create a backstory or anything? No, waste of time. ... You know, you can be conscious of what you had for breakfast but it doesn’t make any difference. The audience doesn’t recognize it. and the Stanislavski method is great and the Method is fine but I find there are easier ways of doing it instead of beating yourself up and beating your head against a wall to create something. Why do all that? ... You can overthink everything.

So when you played an intense character like a Hannibal Lecter, you didn’t need to come down from him afterward? No. I’d show up and have a cup of coffee with Jodie (Foster, his co-star in “The Silence of the Lambs”) afterward. ... If you start taking it seriously, you’ll go nuts so I don’t take any of it seriously. ... I knew some actors who were so into the part that they were a complete pain in the butt to be with: rude, surly, turned up late, showed up late because they thought they were important and in turn kept the crew waiting for hours because they were getting into the character.

CELEBRITY

You make your directing debut on Sunday’s (Oct. 23) episode of your series “Shameless.” How has that process been for you? It’s been really interesting. There are three different “movies” that you make; there’s the movie that’s the script, then there’s the movie you actually make, and then there’s the edited version. They all kind of resemble each other, but structurally and tonally, they can change in each iteration. It’s a process you can’t feel precious about, and also one where it’s easy to lose perspective. The first time you watch something, you either think, “This is good” or “This is horrendous.” and by the fourth time, you’re thinking the absolute opposite of what that was. You question yourself the whole time, and the performances by my cast are so wonderful and so dynamic, it makes it all the more heartbreaking when you have to cut it down from 68 minutes to 55.

Was directing something you’d long wanted to do?The reason I felt at all comfortable with the idea of wearing a different hat on this production was because I knew all the players so well, and the tone and the

history of the characters so well. all those things where a director could take a good script for and ruin, I felt

at least those things weren’t going to be “off.”I also felt a great deal of pressure, because it’s almost harder stepping into a different role with

people who have seen you only in one way, rather than a director

who’s coming in fresh. The actors can say, “Yes, yes, yes” (to that person),

then he or she leaves a week later and they can say, “That person was terrible!” Because I

wasn’t going away, it was very important for me to do it right and be really respectful of the actors ... but I also really wanted to get in there with them and get my hands dirty. I felt like I knew them well enough to give them some ideas that they could use or throw out.

GEORGE DICKIE’S Q&a

What made you decide to put your life with fiancée Lauren Bushnell on TV?It wasn’t an easy decision. It came down to mostly where our life was at, and we weren’t able to kind of exit the public eye the way it was, no matter how hard we tried. and we had so many obligations ... that it didn’t really seem like it was going to change our lives too much to put ourselves back on TV or I guess to show our life to the public again because it seemed like we already were without even officially doing it.

How has it been having cameras around all the time? It’s weird, you do get used to it. You almost, I guess, force yourself to get used to it because if not, it’s really weird and stressful at times. But it just takes a couple of days and after doing “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” – Lauren being on “The Bachelor” – we were kind of used to doing whatever we were going to do in front of cameras. You know, the people around us become friends, confidantes, and so we end up just kind of hanging out with a big family all the time, then Lauren and I do what we’ve got to do.

Did you have thoughts about what came after “The Bachelor”?I really was excited about finding somebody. But even past that – because I think anybody that goes into any of these shows and going, “This is going to be the time that I find my spouse,” they’re a little crazy. It doesn’t always work out. It’s a hard process. I went into it just hoping I would look back and say, “I’m glad I did it.” Whatever that meant. I didn’t have a career path in mind from doing “The Bachelor.” I had a good job before “The Bachelor.” ... I have great friendships, really good people in my life, so I was just trying to say, “Hey, this will be a good opportunity. Maybe I’ll find somebody, maybe I won’t.” But ultimately I’ll look back and say, “Hey, that was a cool season of life and it led me to whatever that was going to be.”

When was your last vacation, where and why?“My last vacation I went to Ojai in California with my family.”

What book are you currently reading?“I just got this very, very old cookbook yesterday, ‘The Greens Cookbook.’ It’s a book from Deborah Madison. … it’s a very, very old cookbook from I think the ‘80s. It’s pretty interesting what they did at that time with vegetables.”

What did you have for dinner last night?“For dinner last night, I ate at the restaurant and actually I got an omelet with mushrooms.”

What is your next project?“My next project is to open a restaurant in Sherman Oaks, where I live. It’s going to be a very classic French restaurant. I have a very classic French restaurant called Petit Trois. and now I’m opening another Petit Trois in a different location in Sherman Oaks, in the (San Fernando) Valley, where I live.”

Like many a successful immigrant, French-born and -trained chef Ludo Lefebvre loves his adopted homeland, in his case Los angeles.

He owns five area restaurants there with a sixth on the way, created the pop-up dining concept LudoBites and the food truck LudoTruck, and is generally credited with carrying the flag for the fine-dining experience in SoCal. He’s certainly made his mark in the L.a. Basin and for the next few episodes, he invites viewers into his restaurants, his world and his thinking in Season 5 of “The Mind of a Chef,” airing Thursdays on PBS (check local listings).

The 45-year-old Lefebvre has seen much change in his 20 years as an angelino, watching a restaurant scene that was based largely in French and Italian cuisine to one more influenced by Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian flavors. and he has changed with it, moving away from French ingredients and toward asian.

and like a good angelino, he knows that a lot of fine dining can be found in strip malls. He has two side by side in a strip mall in Los angeles, Trois Mec and Petit Trois, the latter of which is the setting for this week’s episode.

“For me it was less pressure to open a restaurant in a strip mall because I can do whatever I want in a little restaurant like this,” he says. “Even if I decide to do ... for example, a Mexican restaurant tomorrow, I can do it because it’s low cost. It’s a small place, the costs are smaller and it gives you a lot of freedom to change if you want.

“You know, when you have a big restaurant you can’t change just like this, a whole concept,” he continues in his thick French accent. “So for me to be in a strip mall, it was more about freedom, express myself the way I want and ... also less pressure financially. ... I don’t need to spend $2 million and I don’t want to do that.”

For Lefebvre, the strip mall is also representative of the L.a. lifestyle that he now so enthusiastically embraces.

“The strip mall – that’s Los angeles, California,” he says. “You know, we have a lot of strip malls here and I love it because I know it’s not Paris but at least in my strip mall I know I can walk. I love it. I can walk and get my donuts, to my cleaner, I go to get my pedicure and manicure. I like it. You know, it’s life happening in the strip mall and I like that.”

Odette annable and her husband have taken turns playing doctor ... and it’s hers again this television season.

Her fellow-actor spouse Dave has worn the garb and spoken the jargon on series including “Red Band Society” and “Heartbeat,” and after her work on “House,” she returns to medical matters as the CBS drama “Pure Genius” premieres Thursday, Oct. 27. along with Dermot Mulroney and Reshma Shetty (“Royal Pains”), she plays a staff member at a specialized hospital dedicated to solving medical mysteries, with funding from a Silicon Valley tycoon (augustus Prew) who has very personal reasons for bankrolling the project.

“The technology on this show is so different from anything that I have ever seen,” annable says, “and I really feel like the hospital itself is a character. That was the big difference that I saw. I loved working on ‘House,’ and it was such an incredible experience for me. Doing this, it’s just – for me – a completely different show.

“The wonderful thing here is that nothing is fake,” adds annable, “We’re talking about real technology that is in the works or already being used. It’s all happening, and it’s so exciting to be a part of a show like that. I walk on the set and I’m blown away by what I see.”

Created by executive producer Jason Katims (“Parenthood,” “Friday Night Lights”), “Pure Genius” is the latest of several series for annable, who has aBC’s “The astronaut Wives Club” and Cinemax’s “Banshee” in her recent past.

“I feel really lucky,” she reflects, “and I hope I continue to work, because I love to do it. Now I have a baby, and I thought I would want to stay home longer. I actually didn’t know how I’d feel, but for me, working and feeling fulfilled makes me a better mom. My mom always worked, and I adore her and we’re best friends, and I want the same for (my own daughter) Charlie. and I’m working on something that I love, and I think it’s an important show.”

The NFC West has been a two-team race for the past few years; those teams, the arizona Cardinals, with their veteran wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, and the Seattle Seahawks, face off Oct. 23, on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Both teams got off to a slow start this year so this midseason match up is a big one for all teams in the division.

Last season the Cards went 13-3, handily winning the division over Seattle before bowing to Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Championship. Fitzgerald had another solid season, playing in all 16 games and catching 109 passes for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s been the go-to-guy for every quarterback he’s played with, including Carson Palmer. It’s hard to forget the Cardinal’s exciting playoff win against Green Bay last season when, on the first play of overtime, Palmer hit Fitzgerald on a short pass then sprinted 75 yards to the Green Bay five-yard line. Two plays later he hauled in the winning touchdown.

Fitzgerald is no doubt a future hall-of-famer. He opened this season by catching his 100th career touchdown pass, making him one of only ten players to achieve that feat. although he may not catch Jerry Rice’s record of 197, Fitzgerald could finish his career among or very close to the top five. For now the focus is on getting the Cards, who were among the NFL’s best in both offense and defense last season, back on track with an eye toward the postseason.

If early indications hold, Millennials may not be particularly happy with the way “The Great Indoors” depicts them, but it’s meant to be a comedy.

The CBS show premieres Thursday, Oct. 27, with Joel McHale (“Community”) returning to weekly television as an adventure-loving reporter grounded from globetrotting when his magazine’s founder (veteran British talent Stephen Fry) makes the publication digital-only and asks him to oversee a young staff – with one member played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse (“Superbad”). Each side has a hard time understanding the other: Jack (McHale) doesn’t “get” much of the online savvy of his charges, while they don’t see the true appeal of the places and activities they write about.

“If we are actually offending Millennials and that is the reputation of the show, this is the best press ever,” the typically droll McHale muses. However, series creator and executive producer Mike Gibbons maintains “The Great Indoors” is more about Jack “being on his heels, not recognizing the (newly changed workplace), and then having to reacclimate and be caught up with the help of this new generation. Which is incredibly surprising to him.

STORY

“It is really the opposite” of the targeting-Millennials notion, Gibbons counters. “It is someone admitting, ‘Whoa, I’m out of step. I have to catch up, and I am wrong in many ways – I think – that I thought I was right.’ and then there’s a little bit of, ‘Some of the things, I’m maybe not that wrong about, and that’s where they are going to learn from that.’ ”

The former comedy partner of Hugh Laurie (“House”), co-star Fry notes, “If I thought that Millennials were not able to laugh at themselves, then it would be really sad. The great insult would be not to make any jokes about them because they are incapable of laughing at themselves.” Fellow series regular Christine Ko reasons, “as Millennials, we represent the positive side, which is that we are so into diversity, and we are the most inclusive generation. and that gives a voice for Millennials.”

Susannah Fielding (“Catastrophe”) appears in “The Great Indoors” as Fry’s daughter, who’s also the former flame and immediate supervisor of McHale’s character. She believes the show is “very much about different generations teaching each other things, and there’s absolutely as much fun being made of each other. and that’s what makes it such a joyous show. We want everyone to watch it because there’s somebody that

everyone can relate to, hopefully, from every age and every walk of life.”

Gibbons gives Millennials credit for being “very smart, and we have that in the show in spades. It’s just they have a

voice, and it’s great – but they also have

an inability to resist, like, taking four photos

of themselves every day. If something is about them,

they will come, I think. and also, it really is an equal fight

in this (series’) workplace. It was born out of me feeling so out-of-place,

and all the faults the Gen X generation has in the workplace.”

McHale says he signed up for “The Great Indoors” because “I’ve always wanted to do a four-camera sitcom. You always hear the criticism about them, but I believe they are funny and (always) will be. I thought, ‘This is a world that can go (into),’ and I also like workplace comedies. It’s a big sandbox, and that’s how I felt about ‘Community’ when I first read it. I was like, ‘Oh, this can go anywhere.’ So, that all wonderfully came together. and I bought a new house, and I need to pay it off.”

BY GEORGE DICKIE Sit down for a conversation with Norman Lear and one feels as though they’re talking with a kindly uncle or grandfather, not a TV legend responsible for some of the most groundbreaking series in the medium’s history.

at 94, the creator of “all in the Family,” “Good Times,” “Maude,” “The Jeffersons” and “One Day at a Time,” among others, is a treasure trove of TV history and he recalls events on his shows as though they happened last year, not in the 1970s. His story is told in the new “american Masters” documentary “Norman Lear: Just another Version of You,” premiering Tuesday, Oct. 25, on PBS (check local listings).

The 90-minute film uses stories from Lear, his family and friends to paint a picture of a man who rose from poor beginnings in Connecticut, to begin a career in television writing for “The Colgate Comedy Hour” with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, then created TV shows that not only won Emmys but changed the content of national discourse.

a hallmark of Lear’s shows is that they never shied away from the hot-button issues of the day, be it prejudice on “all in the Family,” interracial marriage on “The Jeffersons” or abortion on “Maude.” That last series invited some controversy in its first season when in a Nov. 1972 episode, the character of 47-year-old suburban housewife Maude Findlay (Bea arthur) opted to have an abortion – this at a time when Roe v. Wade was being argued in the Supreme Court.

Needless to say, CBS was less than thrilled at the potential backlash but Lear argued his case.

“I said, ‘Women at her age are faced with this problem. We want to do it,’ “ he says. “and as a result of the pressure from the network, we wrote in a character we didn’t have. It was a friend of Maude’s. She was pregnant with her fifth child and she had four children she couldn’t afford, and that was her story. and she would no more think of having an abortion than – ever. So she was having her fifth baby when Maude was losing her baby and that helped even it up.”

Probably Lear’s most noteworthy work is “all in the Family,” the landmark 1971-79 CBS comedy about Queens, N.Y., working-class bigot archie Bunker, that won 22 Emmys, garnered near-universal critical acclaim and made a star of a character actor named Carroll O’Connor.

Lear and O’Connor worked together for eight years on “all in the Family” to create one of TV’s most indelible characters but it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Both were strong-willed men who had definite ideas of who archie was and they often clashed, one time resulting in both men walking off set. It took the threat of a CBS lawsuit to bring them back.

Some of “all in the Family” is lifted from Lear’s childhood, including some of archie’s traits (his father’s treatment of his mother, his chair) and the Bunker home, including the famous toilet flush.

“I lived in a house about that size, I grew up in that house,” Lear says. “... We had one toilet (that) my sister and my father and mother and I shared upstairs.”

Truly, those were the days.

BY JaY BOBBINIf women’s issues of the 1960s seem like distant history, “Good Girls Revolt” indicates otherwise.

Based on a nonfiction book by Lynn Povich, the new amazon series – which starts streaming Friday, Oct. 28 – suggests plenty of modern relevance to the struggles of female newsroom researchers who wanted fair treatment in the late Sixties, when gender equality was a battle as they vied to become writers. anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”), Genevieve angelson (“Backstrom”) and Erin Darke (“Love & Mercy”) play the protagonists, with Joy Bryant as Eleanor Holmes Norton, the real-life lawyer (and later Congresswoman) they hire to represent them.

Veteran producer Lynda Obst (“Sleepless in Seattle,” “Hot in Cleveland”) reflects, “I think Lynn had not wanted to sell the book for a long period of time because, as a journalist, she was very suspicious of the various ways in which it could be distorted as both a movie and a television show. She didn’t 100-percent want to do a documentary, because she didn’t want to invade the lives of her colleagues ... and she didn’t want to fictionalize it entirely, because she thought it might be distorted into some kind of exploitation film.”

Having been a journalist herself – as was fellow executive producer Dana Calvo (“Narcos”), who developed the book into the series – Obst told Povich she would “try to do it without, in fact, distorting it journalistically. and yet, we could still change the characters so their privacy wouldn’t be invaded. and after six months of a campaign to convince

her of my ardency and purity of my intentions, I think she really knew that I cared about the journalism of this, and getting the journalism right.”

Co-star Camp did a guest turn on the same-era “Mad Men,” and she reflects that “Good Girls Revolt” is “definitely picking up where ‘Mad Men’ leaves off, with the time at the end of the last season. Joan (that show’s character played by Christina Hendricks) was starting her own company and starting to really assert herself as a woman in the industry and business. and I feel like our show does pick up pretty much right on that, and what happens to the women, who then have to come forward and take a stand and assert their rights.”

“Good Girls Revolt” also has its male characters, many of whom are depicted in a rather unflattering light. One is played by “Weeds” alum Hunter Parrish – who also portrayed the courtroom defendant who shot Will Gardner (Josh Charles) fatally on “The Good Wife” – and while that view may not be pleasant, he feels it’s accurate within the story being told.

“These were men of the time,” he notes, “and this is how they thought based on their upbringing, and this was their environment. I think what’s interesting is seeing them be challenged ... that they maybe should be considering to interact differently with the women, because of how they feel about the women. and you see that evolve throughout the season, and I like that.”

BY GEORGE DICKIEWith one terrifying swing of his barbed-wire-clad baseball bat – apparently to kill a regular character – the villainous Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) served notice once and for all that he was the man all survivors should fear. and fans of “The Walking Dead” have been waiting since the Season 6 finale this past april to find out who that unlucky party is.

alas, their wait ends this week as Season 7 of “TWD” kicks off Sunday, Oct. 23, on aMC.

as Season 6 ended, Rick (andrew Lincoln) and his group had launched an offensive on the Saviors, who responded with small attacks of their own, and Rick put alexandria on lockdown. When Maggie (Lauren Cohan) began having complications with her pregnancy, members of the group took her to the Hilltop community to get help. On the way, they’re blocked by the Saviors and Negan, wielding his trusted bat, Lucille.

There has been much speculation online as to the identity of Negan’s victim and, of course, the cablenet isn’t offering any hints. as has been custom in TV series production in recent years, the producers have filmed death scenes with all of the major characters to prevent any leaks from getting out.

But who gets to kiss Lucille? We already know that it won’t be Glenn (Steven Yeun), who’s been through trauma after trauma and is stronger for it. His fake-out death last season when he escaped from a group of hungry walkers under a Dumpster annoyed many fans, so killing him for real this time might alienate them for good. The character was killed in the comics but it is known that showrunner Scott Gimple is not one to hew the show’s storylines too closely to the print version.

The candidate most mentioned to be offed is Glenn’s wife, Maggie. She’s shaky and sick from her complications and killing a pregnant woman in a brutal way would certainly establish Negan as an especially cruel villain. Some reports have indicated that Cohan hasn’t been seen on the show’s atlanta-area set after the season opener was filmed and in May she posted an Instagram photo of herself at a beach, presumably far from North Georgia. Of course, all of this could very well be a ruse designed to throw overeager fans off the trail.

The comics offer no clues. Creator Robert Kirkman has said he has a planned ending in mind for the comics but he’s not sharing it with Gimple because he wants the comics to continue long after the series ends. He also doesn’t want the series to affect the comics.

One thing is certain is that come Sunday, fans will have their answer. and it will likely set the tone for the season.

Ingredients4 1/2 ounces confectioners’ sugar (about 1 1/4 cups)1/2 ounce nonfat dry milk (about 6 1/2 teaspoons)1/4 teaspoon kosher salt3 1/2 ounces granulated sugar (about 1/2 cup)3 3/4 ounces light corn syrup (about 1/3 cup)2 1/2 tablespoons water2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract2 or 3 drops each yellow and orange gel paste food coloring

Directions• Combine the confectioners’ sugar, dry milk and salt in a food processor. Pulse 4 or 5 times, until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Set aside.

• Combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup and water in a 2-quart pot. Place over medium heat, cover and cook for 4 minutes. add the butter, clip on a candy thermometer and bring the sugar syrup to 230 degrees F, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and remove the thermometer.

• add the vanilla and the dry mixture and stir continuously with a silicone spatula until well combined.

Pour onto a half sheet pan lined with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes, until the mixture is cool enough to handle.

• Divide the dough into 3 equal pieces. add 2 or 3 drops of yellow food coloring to one piece and knead until the color is consistent throughout. add 2 or 3 drops of orange to the second piece and knead until the color is consistent throughout. Leave the third piece white.

• Roll each piece of dough into a strand about 18 inches long. Cut each strand in half and roll each piece into a strand that is about 1/2 inch thick and 22 inches long.

• Lay the strands side by side (orange, yellow, then white) and press them together using your fingers. Cut into 4-inch pieces. Then, using a ruler or bench scraper, press each piece into a wedge, keeping the orange section wide and making the white part come to a tip.

• Use a wire butter slicer, knife, bench scraper or pizza cutter to cut each wedge into individual candies. Lay the candies on a piece of parchment until dry, at least 1 hour. Store in an airtight container with parchment between each layer.

The remake of “The Magnificent Seven” is quite enjoyable. and quite unnecessary.

The original 1960 Western – inspired by akira Kurosawa’s Japanese classic “Seven Samurai” – still holds up beautifully, but after three sequels and a TV series that was a modest success for CBS over a couple of seasons, it’s not hard to understand why a studio would return to one of its most famous properties.

The story basically stays the same: a town is besieged by a villain (portrayed in this case by Peter Saarsgard, a far cry from the original’s Eli Wallach) and his followers, and the citizens realize they’ll have to hire defenders. Haley Bennett, whose star is in the rise rapidly this fall with this and “The Girl on the Train,” plays the woman who spearheads the deal.

First up for the job is a bounty hunter played by Denzel Washington, reunited here with director antoine Fuqua, who led him to an Oscar in “Training Day.” another collaborator from that film, Ethan Hawke, plays one of the other six ... with the rest made up of the likes of Chris Pratt and Vincent D’Onofrio, each character possessing certain skills that are effective in battle.

and about that battle: You just know a big showdown is coming, and while it’s violent enough, it’s within the constraints of the picture’s PG-13 rating. Those rules were even tighter for movies in 1960, and if director John Sturges could pull it off then, Fuqua certainly can here.

a new “Magnificent Seven” is all well and good, but the original remains a wonderful example of filmmaking and storytelling that’s

just as rich today. One of the tests of remaking a classic is whether the update supports or diminishes the legacy of the original. This “Magnificent Seven” is perfectly serviceable, so it gets credit for not taking anything away from the allure of the title.

also, Washington makes a solid successor to the first version’s Yul Brynner as the leader of the seven. Both iterations of the character hold back on using words when actions will do, so there’s a nice lineage there.

Even if it’s not really needed when the first run at it endures so well, the aim of the latest “Magnificent Seven” is true – and that’s the most that could be asked of it.
