The walk in the Old Town in Żory
Żory was founded in 1272r. The plan of the building
development was based on medieval oval line.
We begin the trip with the visit at the defence wall of the St Philip and Jacob church.
A "Penitential Cross" at the old graveyard. The cross was put on the spot of felony by the murderers.
There are also some interesting objects e.g. „Pilgrim”, old bells, unexploded bomb ( that was dug out from the
ground during the repair of the church square)
The following gate was a part the town fortification, it was called Krakowska Gate or Lower Gate. Today, the
reconstructed gate is at the roundabout, but in fact in the past the gate was located a little bit closer to the town.
The „Small Church„- the remains of the first parish church.
Garncarska street with the characteristic building development. You can visit a famous pastry shop here.
The town square with the statue of Saint Jan Nepomucen,
Town hall with two commemorative boards: One devoted to Otto Stern- our Nobel Price winner and the other about
the Fire Holiday which Żory celebrates on 11-th May.

Walking down the Szeptycki street you will get to the monument of Stanisław Moniuszko- our famous musician
The gate of the town also called Upper Gate.
During World War II the building was Hering’s residence. Today it is used for the purpose of our town museum
The old buildings were used as a camp for the displaced Polish people during World War II
And here we end our trip. We are at the downtown park with the monuments of lions and some lovely fountain
