The Voluntary Trumpet A PUBLICATION OF THE CHARLESTON CHAPTER
OF THE AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS
APRIL 2019
The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral
music. We encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music; inspire, ed-
ucate, and offer certification for organists and choral conductors; provide networking, fel-
lowship, and mutual support; nurture future generations of organists; promote the organ in
its historic and evolving roles; and engage wider audiences with organ and choral music.
DEAN’S LIST As we finish up the Lenten
season and prepare for
Easter and renewal, I hope
all of you are taking some
time on your own to enjoy
our longer and warmer days
and what I consider to be
the most beautiful time
weather-wise in Charleston.
There will be no meeting
this month since we all will be spending extra time pre-
paring for the Easter season. Also, please reflect on how
our Charleston Chapter of the AGO can better serve your
needs. The Board will be meeting again in June to plan
the meetings for the coming academic year and we can
always use your suggestions and help. Thank you to
Nancy Lefter and all of the members who shared their
talent and repertoire during the Organ Crawl and Post-
lude Concert at the Citadel last month. It was a memora-
ble, enriching evening and we are happy to see such a
successful upgrade to the organ at one of our city's most
important institutions.

MARCH PROGRAM AT THE CITADEL Mambers gathered in Summerall Chapel at the Citadel on March 11 to hear a presentation by Jake Hill
from the Cornel Zimmer Organ Builders. Zimmer is refurbishing/rebuilding the nearly 70-year-old
Reuter that had been in disrepair and unusable for decades. The console that resides in the chancel now
is new and plays a digital 86-rank Walker and the Trompette Militaire (en chamade pipes on the west
wall at the rear of the chapel).
The next phase of the organ has begun. The Great, Choir, and Pedal pipes will start finding their way
back to their chamber beginning in May. Eventually, The Walker stops will be replaced by pipes,
making the Citadel organ one of the largest in South Carolina. See the graphic on page 8 for a layout of
the reconstructed north chamber.
Members of the chapter concluded the
program by playing favorite postludes.
Eszter Ablonczy played Praise God,
from Whom All Blessings Flow by
Michael Burkhardt; Alan Hunter played
Declamation by Gilbert Martin; Susanne
Jeter played Crown Him with Many
Crowns as arranged by Anna Laura Page;
Jim Hyatt played The Kingsfold Trumpet
and Variation #5 on Southwell by Alfred
Fedak; Robert Gant played Ayre for the
Dance by Dan Locklair; Diana
Kirkpatrick also performed.
Thanks to Nancy Lefter for organizing
the event and for hosting.
