For more than forty years Unilet has been the worst-kept secret in the hi-f- world, with audiophiles flocking to visit the showroom that is situated back from the High Street in New Malden. Inside the Tardis-like store they found a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of the latest and best in all things hi-fi. Today they can also find superb home cinema equipment ready to be demonstrated in any of the three fully air-conditioned demonstration suites. We invite you to visit us and see and hear for yourself.

In this edition of The Volume, you will find interviews with eight of the industry’s key figures, advice on choosing and installing the right equipment, and listings of all the brands we normally have in stock many of which are on demonstration.

The prices shown are the suggested retail prices in April 2010 and so are for guidance only. We are anxious to offer customers the best value and service possible so please come and talk over your requirements and budget with one of our team. I’m sure we’ll come up with the right equipment combination at a price you’ll be happy with.

Secret of the hidden hi-fi store

Team talkSome people have called us The Magnificent Seven but in truth we’re just seven guys who love what we do. We’ve got a lot of experience between us and each of us is an expert on something!

Joe – isn’t someone you’ll forget. Once you’ve met him, you’ll know what we mean. He’s learned a lot about hi-fi and home cinema in the 10 years he’s been in the industry and he’ll be only too happy to pass on his views to you – especially if you offer him a plain chocolate digestive.

Vernon – Never at a loss for words, he knows every manufacturer personally so we get the latest models first. Vernon claims to have been an audiophile before Eddison invented the Phonograph and we tend to believe him! Passionate about the latest developments he’s also a real lover of vinyl and is responsible for our in-store vinyl collection.

Amit – is brilliant at knowing exactly what works with what. He ensures we have stock of the best of the best at

great prices. He likes to keep a low profile but, after 30+ years in the business, what he doesn’t know about hi-fi

and cables, connectors and headphones isn’t worth knowing.

Page 4: The Volume 2010

Phillip – Having studied studio recording and mastering, Phil has one of the best ears in the business. Actually,

make that two. If you want to compare different speakers, Phil’s your man. He’s pretty hot on computer systems

too which comes in very handy with some of the latest computer-controlled gear.

David – having studied Film, Media and Graphical communications is our resident film buff and is the man to talk to regarding aspect ratios, colour timing, frame rates, digital theatre sound system calibration etc., etc. He’s also responsible for updating our website.

Erick – our latest member is the man to talk to if you want a specialised Sky or Free Sat installation or state-of-the-art multi-room system. When it comes to wiring up

the house for multi-room sound, there’s no-one remotely as talented as Erick. He spent many a year in audio

retailing in Tottenham Court Road, before spending seven years at Sky.

Keith – Quieter than the rest of us, and some would say the wiser for it, Keith’s youthful looks hide the fact that he’s lived audio for thirty years or more. Keith has taken on our service department, getting everything in order. He’s a good listener, great at solving problems and just the sort of ‘teccie’ everyone needs.

1969 In July 1969 the eyes and ears of the world waited for those few words that would announce man’s first steps on land other than earth. It was “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” But meanwhile down in a sleepy suburb of London, another man was taking his first steps into the unknown. Peter Merrick, decided that he didn’t want to follow into the family firm of Ferrograph Reel-to-Reel recorders. His vision was to open a store that would dedicate itself to the very

best in two-channel reproduction. He opened the store that stands today – Unilet at 35 High Street, New Malden.

It was one of the very first stores to dedicate itself to high fidelity. While Michael Caine was driving Minis around in Turin and was saying ‘Hang on lads. I’ve got a great idea’, at Unilet that idea was being turned into reality.

From first steps...

1970s Peter saw that there were some tremendous advances in high fidelity happening around the world and strived to bring the best of the best to his store in New Malden. In America he found Stanton cartridges and became their UK distributor. The quality of their cartridges was appreciated by budding audiophiles long before DJs used their more robust cousins in ‘Scratching’ contests in the Royal Albert Hall which Unilet sponsored. In Japan he found the Stax range of headphones and became their UK distributor. Soon the Unilet store was gaining the reputation of being the avant garde of hi-fi stores demonstrating Accuphase, Fidelity Research, Audio Research, Krell, Apogee, and Macintosh. It was Unilet that first offered customers a bespoke cabling service becoming distributors of Monster Cable and supplying other legendary brands such as Ultra Cables. As Unilet progressed, supported by its quirky ads in the hi-fi press, it became the champion of brands new to the UK such as Nakamichi, Koetsu and was sought out by now legendary Japanese manufacturer, Sansui. But it wasn’t all foreign products. In 1973 Unilet became the first KEF Reference dealer, followed in 1975 by becoming one of the very first Linn/Naim dealers and a couple of years later one of the first to stock the emergent A&R Cambridge (ARCAM) brand.

Page 7: The Volume 2010

2000sThe team set about completely renovating the New Malden premises, upgrading the demonstration suites to help customers audition the esoteric equipment on offer. Home Cinema was now introduced and Unilet Hi-Fi was now known as Unilet Sound and Vision. But throughout, Unilet has stayed faithful to its two channel roots. And true also to its mission of offering new and exciting brands to audiophiles, during this period manufacturers such as Plinius, Leema, Heed and PMC were welcomed in. Many

1990sThis decade saw many changes but Unilet continued to offer the very best in hi-fi although it now was operating just one (enlarged) store in New Malden. Custom Cable Service was established in the 80s but by now was the leading supplier of bespoke cables in the UK. Determined to champion new products Unilet was one of the first dealers to recognise the qualities of Chord Electronics and was an early championer of Ken Ishiwata and his Marantz

KIs.Sadly, our founder died in 1998 and it was left to members of his team including Amit

Patel and Vernon Hamblin to carry on the Unilet tradition.

1980sBy this time Unilet was operating three more stores in Guildford, Wimbledon and South Kensington as the demand for quality audio products reached its peak. But Peter continued in his quest to find ever more interesting and great performing products. Twice a year he would be found at the American CES shows in Las Vegas and Chicago as well as at all the major international shows. Unilet, as a result, expanded their range of products still further becoming involved in the distribution of ProAc loudspeakers in 1980. Unilet was a very early champion of Antony Michaelson’s new Musical Fidelity brand and was the very first AudioLab dealer in the world. When Yamaha introduced their new surround sound technology, Unilet was very quick to set up a dedicated DSP room, one of the first in the country.

And now...Unilet has always attracted the very best manufacturers and through them the most appreciative of customers. Unilet has always been sought out by hi-fi and home cinema by many famous actors, rock stars and TV personalities. We’re too discreet to mention their names. But you don’t have to be a singer or a film star to appreciate the service and enthusiasm you’re guaranteed at Unilet. Join us as we enter our sixth decade – whatever new products this decade throws up, you’ll catch it first in New Malden.

Open Mic

At what point in time did you decide that you wanted to design and manufacture audio equipment? I have built my first amplifier when I was 10 years old and since then it was my dream to design and produce most musical audio equipments…

What is it that you love about music?Music touches you in such special way and emotional movements you get when music touches you…. This feeling is so unique and there isn’t any other form of art which can do the same…

When you’ve been in the

industry as long as Unilet

have, you get to know the

movers and shakers. Men like

Ken Ishiwata of Marantz,

Pete Thomas of PMC and

Antony Michaelson to name

but three. You may know their

products well but what about

the men behind the brands?

Vernon Hamblin, Unilet’s

elder statesman, talked to

eight of the industry’s leading

lights (to start with!) and

asked them about their likes

and dislikes, what got them

into hi-fi in the first place

and other questions. Their

answers are fascinating and

the full interviews can be

found on the Unilet website.

In The Volume we print

extracts from the interviews.

Ken Ishiwata is probably the single most influential personality in today’s high-end audio industry. Universally acclaimed for his remarkable talent in conceptualising stunning sound reproduction, his views and visions are avidly reported by the world’s Hi-Fi press - and avidly consumed by the world’s music lovers. That’s how Marantz describe their Brand Ambassador. We discovered his love of music started with the violin and that he has always preferred Elvis to the Beatles...

Ken IshiwataBrand Ambassador, Marantz

Apple Mac or PC?Both have strength and weakness… It’s like LP or CD question!! I like both as I love both LP and CD. As you may know I’m a photographer and I use Mac for Photoshop and of course some of music programs they have but audio design tools are mainly on PC!!

CD or Vinyl? In my opinion we shouldn’t compare those…. There are so many LPs I have are never issued on CD... For me they both are wonderful format to give me pleasures of enjoying music I love very much…

What was your first product as a manufacturer? It was Pioneer PL-12 Turntable when I was working at Pioneer Europe, I’ve given so many inputs on this product which I learned from European products…

What is your point of reference when designing new products? As you know we design many products based on price positioning in mind and finalise accordingly but I’m always making sure they all perform in Marantz way!! This tradition is so important to maintain our identity! That’s why I always say “Because Music Matters” In my opinion this is the only reference point regardless of price tags…

Beatles or Rolling Stones?I was not too crazy about both since I loved Elvis so much but I know they both made wonderful songs and I can appreciate both of them now... I guess I’ll pick Beatles if I have to pick one…

Do you play any musical instruments?First instrument I’ve learned was violin… I can play some guitar… I also enjoy playing Ukulele sometime…

What was the first record you ever bought?I was playing violin, so I bought many old masters like David Oistrakh and Jascha Heifetz LPs.

What piece of Hi-Fi/Home Cinema equipment do you consider to be totally iconic?Marantz Model 7C Tube pre-amplifier, this is the absolute icon for Marantz…

What is your favourite album/piece of music?Again so many of them but if I have to pick one then Patricia Kaas album ‘Je te dis vous’.

What Hi-Fi System do you have at home? They change all the time because of my work... But B&W Emphasis speakers stay.

What is your favourite book?If you are talking about novels, then SHOGUN… Amazing book knowing it’s written by Non Japanese…

How do you see the future for this industry?People will always listen to music!! Of course they’ll listen in so many different ways but they will always need some sort of playback system! We must understand needs of people.I always say “We must understand NTV of people and come up with concepts”. NTV stand for Needs, Tastes and Values.

How do you think audio/visual products will develop during the next 20 years? As I mentioned in Q20, NTV will change and we all have to adapt and come up with products meeting NTV of people! One thing for sure, Quality will keep improving!!

Chord Electronics was founded in 1989 by John Franks who professes to having never played a musical instrument, describes himself as a bit of a Luddite but has been responsible for some of the most esoteric equipment we’ve ever sold. Have you heard the RED Reference Mark II?

At what point in time did you decide that you wanted to design and manufacture audio equipment? I must have been around 16 when I sold my first home made amplifier. It was a 10 Watt Germanium powered transistor unit and it sounded pretty good as I recall. That would have been in 1971.

What is it that you love about music?Music is the door to your soul, so I do wonder about those who love Lady GaGa. Seriously, it should always be an emotional experience and my favoured music, if I am in a classical mood, seems to evolve around 20th Century Romanic

composers such as Ravel, Debussy and I do love Russian composers such as Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Borodin etc. I love the brittleness and calm they impart, like a hard, bright winters day.

What was your first product as a manufacturer? My first product was a 200 Watt per channel amplifier known as the SPM 900. It was little more than a shoe box in size, you see I made the mistake that because I could make it small, I did and although it was appreciated by some it ultimately failed in the market place because of its small size. I think I have always been ahead of my time.

What is your point of reference when designing new products?Often my point of reference when designing new products is the last product I have designed. You see, one design will often lead to another. I tend not to look at anything from the industry and certainly, I believe that form should follow function and the aesthetic design should be clearly recognizable, even in a crowded Hi Fi store. I hate bland boring black boxes that are supposedly worthy because they are so boring.

Beatles or Rolling Stones?Beatles: for their musicality and Rolling Stones for their sheer guts and staying power. Old rockers should never retire; they should just shrivel up like a bunch of old grapes in a forgotten fruit bowl.

CD or Vinyl? Both. If done right and with the right electronics.

What was the first record you ever bought?‘Get a little help from my friends’ by Joe Cocker. First album was Soft Machine 3. This was progressive Jazz, fronted by Robert Wyatt who went on to sing, Ship Building, about the Falklands war, written by Elvis Costello.

Global Warming...Man made or not?Definitely man-made, thank God. I think it’s probably a good thing though, because if you examine the geological record for England and Northern Europe for the last two million years, for all but ten thousand years it’s been an ice age, with a mile of ice above Birmingham. So that’s the normal condition and the last 15,000 years has been warmer but definitely abnormal, so I think it’s probably a very good thing, taking the world further away from a hair trigger of flipping back into another ice age. Mind you, a mile of ice over the top of Music Matters wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Only kidding, I love the guys really.

What piece of Hi-Fi/Home Cinema equipment do you consider to be totally iconic?I think Ken Ishiwata from Marantz should be totally preserved in wax. He’s done great things for the industry and has always been a warm and friendly presence at so many hi fi shows. Apart from that I think the Sony Esprit amplifier of the 1980 period was pure genius, although not a commercial success.

What is your favourite film?My favourite film is Blade Runner. With beautiful cinematography for its time, especially the scene of the Chinese bicycles running through the city, all very evocative of a far future that would in fact only be 8 years away.

Do you play any musical instruments? And no I don’t play any musical instruments. As a working class boy of the sixties, only the specky, spotty, swatty kids were made to play instruments.

What Hi-Fi System do you have at home?My hi fi system is a Chord CPM 3350 integrated amplifier with a RED Reference playing into Wilson Benesch ACT2s.

What is your favourite album/piece of music?I don’t think I can answer this question because favourites always change from day to day, month to month, but I do like cool jazz when it’s all going in the right direction.

What is your favourite book?My favourite book is The Lost Domain by Alain Fournier, a rather strange and mysterious tale of 18th century France. He only wrote the one book as he was killed at Verdun.

What music are you currently listening to?Stanley Clerk, Underworld. Miles DavisWhat is your favourite food?My favourite food is a beautiful tender steak, 24 oz is perfect, the perfect size to get half way through, realize what a pig I have been and ask the waiter if I can take it home.

KEF acoustics engineer Dr Andrew Watson says the Muon is the result of a series of acoustic experiments. The 2-metre tall floorstanders cost £70,000 a pair; there are only 100 pairs in existence and visitors to Unilet’s Open Day a couple of years ago were some of the first people in Britain to hear them. Read what Andrew thinks about the industry (when he’s not doing a gig in Tunbridge Wells with his rock band!

When did you decide that you wanted to design and manufacture audio equipment? I started building my own speakers when I was about fifteen so, when it came to thinking about university courses, acoustics was an obvious choice as it encompassed quite a few of my interests. After graduating and a few years hopping between university research contracts I landed myself a job in the speaker industry and I’ve been here ever since.

What is it that you love about music?Listening to music is like sitting round a camp fire - it connects with something very deep within us.

CD or Vinyl?I quite happily use both. Even if recordings, Hi-Fi components and rooms were capable of being ‘perfect’, we’d probably still want to tweak the sound in one way or another.

What was your first product as a manufacturer? The first ‘from the ground up’ project I did at KEF was probably the TDM THX system for which I worked on the front speakers and the 34DS dipole surround. It was nice to do a project that required a significant amount of background acoustical work on things like timbre matching and minimizing the localization of the surrounds. Then, when it all comes together and sounds good, it’s very satisfying – the front speakers set up the soundstage and the surrounds pull it back into the room to envelop the listener.

What is your point of reference when designing new products?Raymond Cooke said: ‘without drama, without exaggeration, without artifice’.

significance, but I never really got into either, although I remember playing Eleanor Rigby as a bass guitar duet at a folk club once. Everyone was into the Beatles and the Stones when I was growing up but I was drawn more to blues and jazz rock – Weather Report, Muddy Waters and all sorts of obscure stuff I’d find at the local second hand record shop. The only superstar band I was into at the time was The Who.

What was the first record you ever bought? The first single I bought (or was bought for me) was ‘Two Little Boys’ by Rolf Harris. I also remember buying ‘Rubber Bullets’ by 10CC and an EP by Brian Ferry featuring ‘The Price of Love’. The first album I bought was ‘Honky Chateau’ by Elton John.

Global Warming...Man made or not?The hype is definitely man made. It is most likely a natural phenomenon that goes through cycles over time. However, I cannot believe than man’s activities on this planet are not influencing it to some degree. So the increased awareness is probably a good thing. There are a few other candidates for upcoming global catastrophes, maybe these will start to get more of a hearing (that’s assuming we don’t get hit by an asteroid in the mean time – that would be a real bummer).

What piece of Hi-Fi/Home Cinema equipment do you consider to be totally iconic? It was way before my time at KEF, but the Model 105 did a lot to define the modern loudspeaker and how they are designed and manufactured.

Do you play any musical instruments?Yes, bass guitar mainly. In the past I’ve played in a variety of bands from Jazz to Reggae, including the once-a-year KEF Christmas party band. Currently gigging around Tunbridge Wells with classic rock band ‘Deep Fix’.

What Hi-Fi System do you have at home?My house is full of hifi equipment, old and new. Systems get changed often as I like to experiment quite a bit and there’s normally a prototype speaker or two that’s being tinkered with.

What music are you currently listening to?‘Enigmatic Ocean’ by Jean Luc Ponty.

How do you see the future for this industry? The industry is always changing for a host of reasons. There are constant shifts in the product types that are manufactured, new product types bring in associated technologies from new sources, talented young engineers are always coming through and technical capability is spread around the world much more than it once was. However, the essence of our business on the loudspeaker side is much the same – researching and designing quality components and combining them intelligently into systems which sound good and look good.

How do you think audio/visual products will develop during the next 20 years? That will be partly down to the usual forces of customer requirements and the desire for products of a certain type, and the possibilities resulting from new technology that’s always being developed by audio companies. But it’s also dependent on by the types of houses that we live in because they are not always HiFi or AV friendly.

Our challenge it to make sure the public is aware of the standard of sound reproduction that’s possible, ensure that high quality source material gets into people’s homes, and to produce products in a form that people want to invest in because they know they will get a lot of satisfaction from them.

Page 22: The Volume 2010

Popular opinion is divided by the Sales and Marketing teams of the principal manufacturers. Sony, for example, will tell you that LCD is best. Why? Because they don’t make Plasmas. Fujitsu will give you the contra-argument for obvious reasons and Panasonic will sit with the fence post planted well and truly where the sun doesn’t shine because they make both to a very high standard. So it’s much like the divided opinions on Jeremy Clarkson. Some think he is a witty, informed writer and presenter who deals out common sense in handfuls and should be Prime Minister. The rest just think he’s an annoying self-opinionated prat!

Firstly, we have to ask ourselves what size of new TV do we want? If the answer is up to 36’’, then you simply have no choice - LCD, LCD or, er LCD. None of the manufacturers make a plasma below 37’’. Between 36’’ and 46’’ you have a choice. For larger screens it’s a Plasma. Next, the “Green” argument. All manufacturing industries are under the Ecology hammer and TV manufacturers are no exception. Since 2006, all the leading companies, particularly Pioneer and Panasonic, have made sure that their Plasma screens consume no more power than their LCD stable mates. In either case, both use far less power

Plasma or LCD?Vernon Hamblin explains why Jeremy Clarkson looks better than James May!

Page 23: The Volume 2010

than your old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) television. HD Ready or Full HD? This question has much less relevance today than it did. Put simply, HD ready means that the screen accepts High Definition connections, but isn’t actually operating at full resolution (1080p). Full HD means all of the above, but is operating at full resolution. Most LCD’s and Plasma screens are now Full HD. Now we come to the crux. LCD or Plasma.....which one? In the final analysis, all Reference studies on this subject agree on the following principal points that make Plasma the superior medium over its back-lit rivals (LCD, Rear Projection and CRT TV’s). 1. Nominal life 100,000 hours. Twice that of CRT and Rear Projection. A third more than LCD.2. Plasma achieves better colour reproduction than any other format apart from some projector/screen combinations. To be precise, 68 Billion colours per square metre vs. 20 Million over the same area for LCD.3. Far superior contrast ratios - Nominally 1:1000,000 on a good screen. Greater than CRT and on average, twice as good as LCD. In other words, the blacks are blacker and the whites are whiter.4. Very fast response times - Up to 0.001 m/secs which enables plasma ideal for viewing fast motion. In particular, sports and films. LCD is much slower therefore causing motion blur.5. Viewing angle - Similar to CRT (180

degrees). LCD suffers from degradation well below this angle, and the picture ‘greys’ at high angles.6. Irrefutable point - The larger the screen, the more apparent these differences become. So, there we have it. Where you have the choice, then go Plasma. Where you don’t, then go for the best and most advanced LCD you can afford. So for a small screen (36’’ and below) you still have to embrace Jeremy Clarkson. 42’’ and above, the decision, I’m afraid, is still Jeremy Clarkson. Regarding the middle-ground, you could pretend that you prefer James May, but somewhere, deep in the recesses of your mind, you know that Jeremy Clarkson is still the right choice. The future? There are distant rumblings about OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode), but these screens are currently very small and very expensive. And on that bombshell, I’d like to thank you for your interest, and if you want more detailed information on the above discussion then you know where to find me.

Joe Reynolds, the President of Nordost reckons that the ultimate audio connection is silent and invisible. Fortunately for Unilet, he was far from silent when it came to talking to Vernon. At what point in time did you decide that you wanted to design and manufacture audio equipment? This was in 1991 when I started looking at the cabling requirements for a line of loudspeakers that Nordost was importing from Denmark. This project started with one flat extruded FEP cable and soon morphed into a full line of unique cable products. I learned a lot about cables during that period.

Apple Mac or PC?I use an Apple Mac which I just got about a year ago with the matching iPhone.

What is it that you love about music? The emotional experience it conveys. Good music paints pictures and it can alter ones state of mind in a very positive way.

CD or Vinyl?Vinyl definitely I just got a VPI Classic turntable last year and I am having a lot fun rediscovering music. There is something magical about the sound.

Bach or Beethoven?Maybe Beethoven but my favourite classical composer is Aarvo Part who is I think a genius. I also like composers such as Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Aaron Copeland.

What was your first product as a manufacturer? This product was Nordost Flatline speaker cable which was the first flat extruded FEP (Teflon) cable on the market back in 1992.

Page 26: The Volume 2010

What is your point of reference when designing new products?Live music is the reference point of course. In the last year we have started a partnership with a research company in the UK. The results of this ongoing work are very exciting indeed as we can now see what is happening to signals when we improve the cabling, racks and other ancillary equipment around the electronics. We have started to scientifically verify what a lot of people could hear but could not measure for the last forty years. Yes a good power cord or rack can improve a CD player and we can now measure the results in verifiable and repeatable manner. This science is helping us to develop much better products and take away the voodoo elements of cable design.

Beatles or Rolling Stones? The Beatles for sure I think they revolutionized popular music.

What was the first record you ever bought?I think it was Hey Jude by the Beatles.

Global Warming...Man made or not? We have definitely affected the climate with our activities.

What piece of Hi-Fi/Home Cinema equipment do you consider to be totally iconic?I don’t think there is one. The standard of equipment on the market now is very high the problem is that most people don’t know how good it is. At Nordost we can make all most any equipment sound good when we give it the full treatment of cables and Sort Kones resonance control devices. Quite a few manufacturers of electronics and speakers have been surprised when they have heard the sonic results when we use their products at various shows around the world.

What is your favourite film?My favourite film is Lawrence of Arabia an absolute classic with superb cinematography.

What is your favourite album/piece of music? This is a tough one. I would say Hot Rats by Frank Zappa.

What Hi-Fi System do you have at home? I have a Krell Evolution CD player and a VTL pre and power amp 400 series with a VPI Classic Turntable. The speakers are Verity Parsifal’s. I am using a Stillpoints rack with a full loom of Nordost Odin cable and a Thor power distribution system with Quantum QX 4 field generators. I also use Jeff Rowland amps with System Audio speakers.

Is there one place on Planet Earth that you would like to visit or re-visit?Patagonia is high on my list. I have hiked in Iceland and Spain but I would love to do a trip to Patagonia.

What music are you currently listening to?Gotan Project which is a new take on tango music.

How do you see the future for this industry? I think it is very positive and it will continue to grow and change; that is for sure. How do you think audio/visual products will develop during the next 20 years?I am sure we will have 3D video. I think vinyl will still be around. I think that products will be easier to use and it will be a lot of fun.

Page 27: The Volume 2010

Those among you of a certain age will no doubt remember those 1960’s puppet based kids TV programmes. I’m sure the opening credits of “Supercar”, “Fireball XL5”, “Thunderbirds”, “Captain Scarlet” etc, etc are flashing past your eyes as you read.

Their creator, Gerry Anderson, used every trick in the book to try and fool us that he wasn’t actually using puppets. Vast amounts of smoke and many mirrors. Lots of deliberately “out-of-focus” camerawork and even substituting the puppets’ hands with human ones! But none of that mattered to us because we all knew that the whole thing relied entirely and absolutely on wires. The puppet characters themselves, the aeroplanes and other flying gizmo’s. Even the cars were pulled along model roads with wires.......and you could see ‘em all!

Today, just about everything we touch and use is connected to something else by wires.....The London Electricity Board, your car, Dell, your telephone, the BBC, the lights in your home and office, Apple, your bank, Nokia, your cooker and Stephen Hawking would all be completely buggered without them!

And so it is with any Hi-Fi or Home Cinema System.

And yet I am constantly asked by many people who are clearly intelligent and well informed this question:

“Why do I need so many wires?”

I’m sorry people but the plain answer is “You just do” Particularly when installing and commissioning a Home Theatre system. Whilst this “wiring loom” is not as complicated as the one in a modern car I would suspect that it is, probably, more sophisticated than the one in the vehicle

Cables and WirelessWhy you still need to wire up your system

that put Neil Armstrong on the Moon 40 years ago!

So, we have two choices. Either ignore them because they are helping to make the 5.1 Surround Sound in your front room so brilliant. Or, we do our best to disguise them. We keep them tidy with Cable Management Systems. Tuck them under carpets and behind skirting boards. Plaster them into walls and hide them under suspended floors. Either way.......you need them.

All is not lost though. We now have a modern wire called an HDMI Cable.(High Definition Multi-Media Interface). This wire can carry High Def video and up to 8 channels of uncompressed digital audio down its slim profile. Think of it as a digital SCART Lead. This wire has enabled us to reduce greatly the number of wires required to connect up the principal components of a modern Home Theatre system. You still, of course, need a minimum of 5 Loudspeakers plus a Subwoofer to do proper Surround Sound and they need wires.

Some readers are, no doubt, saying things like “Bluetooth” and “Wi-Fi” for wireless loudspeaker connections. True........providing you are happy to compromise the sound quality. These two wireless options are incapable, at the moment, of supporting the very high data rates required of the latest digital carriers found on Blu-ray discs.

So, for the time being I’m afraid, Gerry Anderson and NASA did it right in the first place.

On a final note, I would always advise that you purchase the best quality wire you can afford. Thanks for your interest, take care and see you next time.

Page 29: The Volume 2010

This box of electronics is the engine of any home cinema system. The home cinema receiver comes in various sizes and levels of sophistication and from many different manufacturers. But regardless of these variations, they all share the same basic features and functionality. The principal points being to allow A) the receipt and processing of the digital surround sound files found on DVD’s and Blu-Ray discs and B) to then pass the various channels of audio data to the appropriate number of amplifiers needed to drive the numerous loudspeakers required for proper surround sound. Sound simple? Err...No actually. I am not aware of any home cinema receiver that is “plug and play”. In fact, most are “plug and pray”. Also, some of the high-end examples are so sophisticated that their instruction manuals are similar in size and about as easy to read as an unabridged print of “The Canterbury Tales”.So, let’s take each section of a modern home theatre receiver separately.

1. Digital Sound Processing section (or DSP)Inside the box are a set of processing chips programmed to decode the following surround sound carriers: Dolby Digital and DTS found on DVD’s. Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio & LPCM 5.1 found on Blu-Ray’s. These processors are also programmed to create psuedo-surround sound (Dolby Pro-Logic/DTS Neo 6) from stereo and

mono sources such as Nicam stereo, FM Stereo and CD Audio. All this is happening entirely in the digital domain. On the rear panel of these machines are all the digital connections you require, ie. Optical or Coaxial for DVD, CD and Sattelite sound. HDMI for Blu-Ray HD sound. High-End products will even up-sample and re-clock these datastreams in an effort to squeeze every last detail out of these soundtracks. The final result of all of this processing is that the 5.1, 6.1 and even 7.1 surround data is unravelled and placed in the correct channels. Impressed?...you should be, because even in a fairly modestly priced product, there is more computing and processing power than NASA used to oversee the entire Apollo Space Program. Mind boggling isn’t it?

2. Digital to Analogue Converters (DAC’s) We hear in the analogue domain, so all of this wonderous digital stuff has to be converted into something we recognise. So, much like a CD player, a home theatre receiver has DAC’s, only they’re much more sophisticated. The final result is up to 8 channels of analogue sound converted from the highest quality digital data currently available. Buried within these two processes are further programs that allow you to adjust individual speaker volumes and distanceslistening/viewing position. And for once, the more you spend, the more you get in terms of sophistication and quality. For the more adventurous, there are also built-in “DSP Modes”, which will augment the audio signal to create the illusion of listening in a Concert Hall, Stadium or even a Jazz club. The choice is up to you, but DSP processing is the Marmite of the Home Cinema world. Not everyone wants to feel like they’re watching Corrie at the 02 Arena.

Setting up your home cinemaPlug and pray - or call us in

Page 30: The Volume 2010

3. The Video CircuitEarlier Home Cinema Receivers were used exclusively for audio processing, with all video connections going directly to the screen. This made for a spaghetti junction of cabling going in every direction. Up-to-date receivers are now also equipped with video processing, allowing you to connect Standard Definition (Satellite, VHS, DVD) video sources and, in some models, re-scale to the current High Definition standard (HDMI). This means that the modern Home Cinema Receiver is truly the heart of the system.

4. The Amplifier SectionThis is the bit that makes your loudspeakers work. Stereo amplifiers appear to be smaller, because they only need two single amplifiers to drive a single pair of speakers. The more loudspeakers, the more amplifiers you need. Patronised?...then I apologize. But this part of the Home Theatre Receiver is generally what dictates its final physical size. The bigger your loudspeakers, the bigger and more powerful your amplifier will need to be. On this occasion, I’m afraid to say chaps...Size does matter!

Home Theatre Receivers come in many guises. One Box style (including a radio tuner). Some also include Internet and iPod connectivity. More sophisticated manufacturers split the processor and amplifier sections into two separate boxes. You can spend a few hundred pounds if you wish, but don’t forget, this box of electronics is the heart and engine of your home theatre. Always go for the best one you can afford. On a final note, I would like to make this slightly controversial point... Even if you spend a few hundred pounds on your Home Cinema Amplifier, even if you also spend a few hundred pounds on the five speakers and subwoofer to go with it, even if you make sure you position the speakers correctly in your chosen room. You must, repeat, must take your time and set-up properly. If you are not sure, then get someone to set it up properly for you. Because if your new Home Theatre system is set up and calibrated by someone who cares and knows what he/she is doing, then I absolutely guarantee that regardless of the amount of money you have spent, your Home Theatre will sound better than most commercial cinemas. Why?...contact me at the shop and I’ll explain.

Page 31: The Volume 2010

A & R Cambridge, or ARCAM was started by John Dawson. While at Trin ity College, Cambridge he designed and built a number of amplifiers including a special one for visiting classical guitarist John Williams. He claims he is too lazy to have learned to play a musical instrument but still found time to answer Vernon’s questions.

At what point in time did you decide that you wanted to design and manufacture audio equipment? I started when I was still at school – I built my first (mono!) amplifier in the early sixties for use with my school’s film projector. I carried on building through my university studies at Cambridge but started seriously in 1975/76, when the original A&R Cambridge A60 stereo hi-fi amplifier was conceived. We thought we would build 50 and sell them to our friends, but soon started distributing them through dealers (Unilet was an early account!) and eventually sold some 32,000 of them worldwide

Apple Mac or PC? PC; it’s essential for the design and measurement equipment we have. My daughter tells me Macs are easier to use.

What is it that you love about music?Music does something special - it can sooth or revitalise the soul. It would be difficult to imagine life without music

Bach or Beethoven?Hmmm – Beethoven for me but they are both amazing composers

CD or Vinyl?I was brought up on vinyl and it’s easier to hear the benefits of good turntables/cartridges over poor ones than doing the same sorts of comparisons in CD space. Having said that properly processed 20 - 24 bit digital audio (note the italics!) is clearly better in performance terms than vinyl ever could be. It’s just that there are a lot of ways to muck up the sound, especially post processing in the digital domain, that make many modern CDs pretty obnoxious sounding. There’s nothing wrong with the format though.

What was your first product as a manufacturer? That A60 amplifier. And we can still service them, more than 30 years later!

loudspeakers. In home cinema – unquestionably the DVD format, which brought the potential of great home cinema to the masses.

What is your favourite album/piece of music?Classical – Beethoven’s Pastoral and Fifth symphonies. Modern – Beatles mid career records, Leonard Cohen, earlier Bob Dylan. What a dinosaur ☺

Do you play any musical instruments?Sadly no, though my parents did and my children do. So I blame laziness on my part rather than a total lack of talent.

What Hi-Fi System do you have at home?A stereo system – nothing too ambitious – a Linn LP12, Arcam DV139 as a CD/DVD player, A85 as a stereo amp with very high end AudioQuest cables (we used to distribute AQ and this stuff makes a difference!). I still use old but good Arcam One speakers but it’s really time for some ATCs or PMCs I think...

What music are you currently listening to?Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd. I did say I was a dinosaur!

How do you see the future for this industry?Quite difficult actually unless one can change along with the customers. This applies to dealers as much as manufacturers, for without proper distribution you can fail even if you make the best products in the world. Having said that Arcam tries to stay true to its roots in terms of providing affordable excellent sounding equipment for the reproduction of music and I hope there will continue to be a reasonable market for this kind of equipment.

How do you think audio/visual products will develop during the next 20 years? If I knew that for sure I could be very wealthy!

What is your point of reference when designing new products?Probably live music (usually but not exclusively acoustic rather than amplified) and the sound of real instruments, including the human voice. We are lucky to have several trained musicians on the staff who contribute to the voicing of our products.

Beatles or Rolling Stones? For overall genius the Beatles of course. But at a sweaty party (not that I get much chance to go to these any more) the Rolling Stones would be much better!

What was the first record you ever bought?Heh – I didn’t actually have a record player till my teens (my Dad had FM broadcast and decent Ferrograph tape recorder though, played through his own build Williamson amplifier) – anyway it was a single - “House of the Rising Sun” by the Animals.

Global Warming...Man made or not?I could debate this all day. Let me say that I am a trained scientist and I am unhappy with the way a lot of somewhat speculative material has been presented as fact. But on balance I’d say man is making a significant contribution to climate change and it makes good sense to not waste energy and materials, especially those that are drawn from clearly finite resources such as fossil fuels. But in my opinion we’d be best trying to adapt to the changes that will inevitably happen rather than overreacting to the control of possible partial causes of climate change like man made C02. Bjorn Lomberg (a well known economist) has many good points to make here.

What piece of Hi-Fi/Home Cinema equipment do you consider to be totally iconic? In hi-fi space – probably the various models of Quad electrostatic

Clarinet-playing founder and managing director of Musical Fidelity, Antony Michaelson has been called ‘outspoken’ by an Australian journalist. But Antony prefers his products to do the talking. He says of the Titan “it is in a league of its own in amplifiers, it measures incredibly”.

At what point in time did you decide that you wanted to design and manufacture audio equipment? I fell into hi-fi manufacturing in 1978. At the time I was a musician and passionately interested in hi-fi. By chance I met up with a chap called Kevin Austin and together we went into partnership building Michaelson and Austin tube amplifiers.

What is it that you love about music?Music is life. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the most rarefied form of classical music, jazz or anything; it’s all about the life force and passion. That’s what I love about music.

Bach or Beethoven? This is impossible to answer. It’s like asking whether you prefer your left or right arm. Music in its entirety is central to my existence.

CD or Vinyl? I don’t much care. Music is what it’s about. The politics or technology of the carrier is irrelevant to me.

What was your first product as a manufacturer? My first product was the Preamp.

What is your favourite food? My favourite food is good company and intelligent conversation. Food is just an excuse to get people round the table. However I do love my food!

What is your point of reference when designing new products? I think point of reference is the wrong term. Our intention when designing new products is to get the absolute maximum value for money for our fellow music lovers.

Beatles or Rolling Stones?Beatles.

Open Mic

Global Warming... Man made or not?Let’s be clear I think that terrible things are being done to our environment; industrial effluent, piles of rubbish discharged into the sea. Small particulate waste getting into the ecological system the list of things to scare yourself shitless about is endless. I feel powerless and angry about these things. This does not mean that I’m prepared to swallow anything anybody says just because it’s got the ecological “caring” brand image. I believe global warming is a myth manufactured by an unholy alliance of anti capitalist zealots, power hungry politicians, funding hungry scientific institutions and naïve idealists. The last group really sadden me because they and their ideals are being betrayed by a corrupt self-serving self-reinforcing group.

You might be able to tell that I’m extremely angry about what’s happened with the global warming lobby. This is because I’m incandescent at the lies deceit and corruption that is at the heart of the lobby. Second, much more important, is that the whole environmental lobby has been damaged. As I said earlier we know that terrible things are happening to our environment and we need lobbies that draw attention to them and make a lot of noise. The trouble is as more of the shocking corruption and dishonesty of the global warming lobby becomes apparent the less people will trust any environmental lobbyists. Disaster for us all.

What is your favourite film? Blade Runner, Soapdish, The Freshman.

What was the first record ever bought? Bach Italian Concerto on Saga records. I still remember the black cover with gothic writing.

What piece of Hi-Fi/Home Cinema equipment do you consider to be totally iconic?Radford STA25, Macintosh 2075, Thorrens TD124, SME3009, Ortofon SL15E, Quad ESL, Marc Levinson ML2 and JC1.

Do you play a musical instrument? I used to be a professional Clarinettist and stopped playing seven or eight years ago. Since then I have taken up the piano and spend many happy hours being quite useless at it. I now realise that top professional pianists may not be human at all!

What hi-fi system do you have at home? My main system is AMSCD, Primo preamp and Titan power amps with Kef Reference 205s. Subsidiary systems include Quad ESLs, LS3 5s, Sonas Faber Cremona, Yamaha NS1000, NuVista M3 amp and CD, A5 pre and power, V-DAC (quite a number of these) and a pair of 750K Superchargers.

What is your favourite book? The Cornish Trilogy by Robertson Davies. Also I am a great fan of Terry Pratchet Discworld Series.

What music are you currently listening to?Bach and St Matthew Passion, Whitesnake and DEF Leppard.

Peter Thomas spent thirteen years as a BBC Engineer before he successfully designed the BB5 loudspeakers for their Maida Vale studio. This caused a conflict of interest so he left and set up the Professional Monitor Company. He hasn’t looked back since. Did you experience the great PMC speakers at our last open day?

At what point in time did you decide that you wanted to design and manufacture audio equipment? I think I’ve always wanted to. Ever since my grandfather gave me his wind up record player and a pile of 78’s, I’ve always been fascinated by the process of reproducing music. I suppose it wasn’t until I was working in BBC Radio that the opportunity to actually start a business became available. I became involved with the Maida Vale music studios, where the Radio 1 and 2 sessions were recorded,

and they urgently required a neutral speaker design that would also produce very high sound pressure levels. Many commercially available speakers were tried but, as I was already working with the BBC’s loudspeaker group and my business partner was involved with commercial recording studios, we ended up producing a prototype speaker that met the BBC’s needs by the end of the 1980’s.

Apple Mac or PC?PC.

What is it that you love about music?Everything.

Bach or Beethoven?Beethoven.

CD or Vinyl?Reel to Reel tape.

What was your first product as a manufacturer? The BB5XBD. It was developed for the BBC and finalised after five prototypes. Standing over two metres tall it is still in production 20 years later and is used in most of the mastering studios in the world.

What is your favourite food?Anything without rat in it.

What is your point of reference when designing new products?Accuracy. To be able to reproduce in the home the closest sound to that heard in the recording studio.

Beatles or Rolling Stones?Rolling Stones.

What was the first record you ever bought? The Beatles Twist and Shout EP (10s/6d) but I was heavily influenced by my older sister.

Global Warming...Man made or not?Probably not but as climate science is now a new religion I shall probably be marked as an unbeliever.

What piece of Hi-Fi/Home Cinema equipment do you consider to be totally iconic?Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference turntable designed 1n 1964.

What is your favourite film?2001.

What is your favourite album/piece of music?Elton John’s Tumbleweed Connection. A great pity his current persona overshadows his excellent early work.

Do you play any musical instruments? The piano very badly. Just began piano lessons again.

Touraj Moghaddam the founder of Roksan named his company after an Achaemenian princess who lived around 2500 years ago in Persia. He claims the idea to set up the company came to him and partner Tufan Hashemi back in 1985 over dinner. Tufan had been impressed by Touraj’s first turntable design, the Xerxes. We wonder what was on the menu that night. Touraj told Vernon his favourite food was barbecued sturgeon (marinated with saffron, olive oil and garlic of course).

At what point in time did you decide that you wanted to design and manufacture audio equipment? It was around 1983-84; I found out that the weak link in my HiFi system was the record player. This was after watching a live recording of Thelonious Monk on TV and hearing that the ‘performance’ of the same piece of music played on the turntable was not as good as the ‘performance’ I was hearing on the TV!?

The sound was much better from the HiFi system but not the performance. Recording the remaining of the programme on video and then playing back the audio through the HiFi system confirmed the same! That was when I decided to design my record player.

What is it that you love about music? It is easier to say there is nothing that I don’t love about music. Music and rhythm is part of life. It enriches the mind, body and the soul. From children to elderly respond to it and benefit from it. It is even suggested that it improves performance of people, animals and even plants! Proper exposure to music should become compulsory especially for politicians!

Bach or Beethoven?Bach for when I am thinking and Beethoven for when I have done thinking.

CD or Vinyl?CD because it made me even more determined to show why Vinyl was the better medium for music playback. Of course CD has now come a long way and can provide an adequate playback of music but Vinyl is still by far the best.

What was your first product as a manufacturer?Xerxes record player was my first produced component, however I had built ‘a’ Darius Loudspeaker as a monitor (it proved too difficult to build one so I gave up making the pair!)

What is your point of reference when designing new products? The function/purpose of the product should always be the reference. Defining that function however is a little harder and can take longer than the time taken to design the product itself!

What piece of Hi-Fi/Home Cinema equipment do you consider to be totally iconic?Quad Electrostatics. I just couldn’t believe these were speakers when I first saw them. They sounded pretty good too.

What is your favourite album/piece of music?Dark side of the moon.

Do you play any musical instruments?A bit of drums/percussion and a little piano (played by ear)

What Hi-Fi System do you have at home?Currently; TMS3, Artemiz, Shiraz, Ref. Phono, Platinum Pre & Power , FR-5X also Prototypes of Mono Power Amps, a Cartridge, Loudspeakers, CD player ... and some cables!

What music are you currently listening to?Booster, Lady Gaga, Chopin, Peter Green, Keith Jarrett, ...

How do you see the future for this industry? Our choices and actions ‘today’ define the future of this industry. If we all sat quiet and accepted CD as advertised to be ‘the perfect sound forever’ we would not be

enjoying the abundance of music on vinyl available today.30 years on and vinyl may even outlive CD!? What is important is to cut the Bull... and tell the truth. There is room for any ‘wisely’ designed and introduced product. CDs have their place, iPod is the new ‘Cassette’, SACD never had a place! etc.I believe the generation (90s) who mostly grew up knowing Nintendo and computer games rather than embracing music have now grown up enough to get themselves back into the human race and enrich their lives with music. The new generation however, thanks to iPods and downloads..., already share music with each other and they will gradually and eventually invest in proper music systems for themselves. As long as we avoid Bull... like ‘all you need is an iPod and a docking station’ and provide the young generation with the taste of the real thing, this industry will thrive and get better and better.Don’t forget, the future is not ‘Digital’; unless we are genetically modified to listen to the sound of ‘Fax’ machines.... then whatever the format, it has to be analogue in the end for us to be able to hear it! For that reason alone, there is always the desire to improve on what we have.

How do you think audio/visual products will develop during the next 20 years? We need to keep consumer requirements always in perspective. For flexibility, ease of use and integration there will be more development of digital, mass storage, higher resolution and such like products. There is also be the requirement for better, more musical, more lifelike music playback systems which are of course in analogue and so we will be coming up with new and innovative products to try and get closer to that perfection. The trick is to integrate the two together to provide the best of both worlds.

Page 47: The Volume 2010

Surround Sound has many names. Dolby Stereo, Dolby Digital, DTS & 5.1 are logos and acronyms I’m sure you have all seen.

Let’s travel back in time to the late 1930s. Hollywood had already invented full colour film and by 1939 was look-ing for another gimmick to get bums on seats. In 1940 the American pub-lic were treated to the first film with “Stereophonic Sound”. Stereo on a film soundtrack is actually 3 channels of sound. Left and Right and a centre or dialog channel. Thus, these early “Stereophonic” soundtracks would have music playing through Left and Right and the dialogue was heard through the third centre ‘speaker. The basic standard was set. During the great unpleasantness that occurred between 1939 and 1945 film budgets were slashed. By 1950 interest and budgets were renewed and stereo sound started to re-emerge. Whilst remaining within the genre’s of Musicals and Action Blockbusters it enhanced greatly films

Great film soundHow it works and why it’s down to Mickey Mouse...

like “The Glenn Miller Story”, “Singing In Rain”, “The Ten Commandments” and “A Star Is Born”.

By the late 1950s a further channel of sound had been added to very big budget films. This was a low frequency effects speaker and was put to great effect in films like “Lawrence of Ara-bia” and “Ben Hur”. During the 1960s sound capture became much more sophisticated in both music and film recording studios. The first film to have proper 6-channel (5.1) discreet sur-round sound was the vision of leg-endary film director Stanley Kubrick. In 1968 “2001 - A Space Odyssey” stunned and confounded everyone who saw it. Both visually and sonically breathtaking, it set the benchmark so high that the film industry still refers to it as the de facto standard.

In the late 1960s British electronics en-gineer Ray Dolby designed an analogue compression system for eliminating the “Hiss” on recording tape and the film

industry duly adopted it in the early 70s. This improved the quality of film sound ten-fold.

Further development in the mid 70s al-lowed the addition of pseudo surround channels which created the “effect” of sound coming from behind the viewer. By the late 70s and early 1980s Dolby Stereo had become the sound standard for film. In the early 1990’s Dolby went digital. For the first time since 1968 the film industry had an inexpensive way of creating 5.1 Surround Sound for all films.

Dolby Digital had its rivals - DTS (Digital Theatre Sound) in particular. Many ar-guments ensued as to which was better but 5.1 Digital Sound was here to stay. Home Theatre was becoming more prevalent and when DVD appeared in 1998 it gave the domestic viewer 5.1 sound as well.

What is 5.1? Very straightforward really. To create correct surround sound you need 6 loudspeakers. Front left and right and rear left and right for sound effects and music. Next is a centre or dialog speaker. This one should be placed below or above your screen. There are your 5 channels. The .1 channel is the LFE or Low Frequency Effects speaker and this bass channel is handled by the Sub-Woofer. This is the only way anyone can achieve proper surround sound. There are alternatives like Sound Bars/Projectors and 2.1 systems but they are really a sophisticated cheat. I suggested that this Surround Sound stuff was down to Mickey Mouse. It was Walt Disney who wanted something extra special for his 1940 cartoon “Fan-tasia” and that was the first film to have Stereo Sound.
