Capital
Starting and scaling a business requires ambition, drive, but most of all it requires capital. From traditional lenders to crowdfunding, angel investors and venture capital – what is the smartest way to raise growth capital today?
Creating a robust company culture – when you are trying to build market share and gain traction – may seem like a distraction. But the inability to scale proper company culture has been at the core of many startup failures.
Scaling a business from a small startup to a growing company means change. Budding partnerships with larger organisations such as traditional banks or large IT firms require new management styles and methods.

2017 VC investment into UK FinTech saw its best year on record, with $1.8bn of capital invested over 224 deals, a 153% increase YoY. Global investment into FinTech reached $14.4 billion across 1,824 deals globally.
The maturing of the FinTech industry gave rise to larger rounds in 2017, with the top five FinTech deals in the UK all raising over $90 million (TransferWise, OakNorth, Funding Circle, Interactive Investor and Monzo). Of the total 2017 UK VC investment, 24% went into Challenger Banks, followed by Money Transfer and FX (21%), Alternative Lending/Financing (17%) and Personal Finance/Wealth Management (11%).
We understand how important having insight into the funding landscape is when starting and scaling a FinTech company. Our VC engagement programme is dedicated to providing our members such insight.
Through Innovate Finance, members are provided early access to our widely recognised VC investment landscape report and have priority involvement in our VC events, community surveys and ongoing VC engagement.

Closing the FinTech gender gap remains a priority for Innovate Finance. We want to ensure female founders play a vital role in creating better financial services for our communities. Initiatives such as mentorship programmes, flexible working and career outreach are helping to close the gender gap and create the leaders of tomorrow. Real progress is being made.
But what about the women already making a difference?
Our Women in FinTech initiative aims to celebrate the achievements of women across the industry. Members can shine a spotlight on their own pioneering women in our annual Powerlist and be involved in devising and validating their own diversity moves to promote change.

On invitation from the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Innovate Finance led an industry-wide consultation on the viability of an Industry Sandbox. The findings have been published in a report on the use cases and optimal design features of an Industry Sandbox globally.
While the focus of the consultation and our ongoing sandbox work is industry-led, through Innovate Finance members that wish to engage in sandbox development can contribute to further consultations, surveys or discussion-led workshops.
What is an industry-led sandbox?
An Industry Sandbox is a controlled environment that enables any innovative company to test the viability of its products or service before going to market. It is a space for off-market testing and is equipped with access to systems, data sets and APIs, certain other tools, and supported by a critical mass of tecnology, legal and reglatory and other professional advice.
What does it aim to do?
The Sandbox provides an opportunity for industry to pool resources to overcome common hurdles in adopting innovative technology. It also can support regulators in their objective to facilitate market competition, and gives them early sight of solutions, which may need to be regulated.

ONGOING POLICY AND RESEARCHOur members are changing the face of financial services. The UK currently leads the world in FinTech innovation, in part driven by progressive policy decisions to support competition and innovation in financial services.
Through our ongoing research and policy work Innovate Finance strives to keep the concerns of the FinTech community and the issues that may affect the growth of the industry on the Government‘s agenda.
The UK’s leading position in the FinTech world is far from assured. FinTechs and institutions in our membership are working towards reducing their exposure to the negative effects of a ‘Hard Brexit’. The UK government must therefore continue to be active in this space and ensure the momentum which has been built is not lost.
To support this continuity, Innovate Finance will continue to provide policy work and research to promote and lobby for:
