World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine is a global initiative that aims to raise aware-ness about hunger in poverty-stricken countries. This year, World Vision’s focus is on Rwanda, with funds raised aiming to help communities to improve their soil conservation and knowledge of good nutrition, learn new ways to earn an income, and to help families improve their decision making in regards to food and spending.

This year, SVF led the charge to en-gage the College Community, and had a fundraising goal of $1000. We are excited to announce that, by the end of September, The RMC Team will have

raised $3022.85! We would like to thank Paul and College Admin, Simon and Kait, all the sponsors who donated to the various RMC Team Members, and, most importantly, a big thanks and gratulations to the participants of the 40 Hour Famine for 2014 (see above).

We are so proud of the efforts that the participants have gone to to raise money for this important cause — our efforts can help provide food and nutrition to 39 people for

On Sunday RMC and DLC headed over to UNSW to take on their colleges in a game of rugby. Unfortunately the girl’s touch game got cancelled because UNSW couldn’t field a team (jks - Laura Coleman was too intimidating), so the RMC / DLC team had to wait a few hours for the game.

After about 3 warm up sessions that lasted about 5 minutes each ( in order to save our ‘fit-ness’ ), eating most of the free bbq and chang-ing fields twice due to the rain, the game was finally ready to kick o!. Despite our pre-match observations that UNSW looked like a team of gronks, they scored first with a quick try, and another soon after... and another after that!

Nevertheless, the boys rallied hard to hit back before the break. The second half was better, with tries to Andrew Burton and Alec Palm-er putting us back in the game. But, UNSW proved to be too strong and scored another two tries – our only consolation was being able to collectively laugh and yell at the kicker for miss-ing a conversion dead in front.

The free beers after the game made defeat easier to swallow and, overall, it was a great day for all the colleges that participated.

A big thank you to everyone who took to the field and supported from the sidelines -

Semester Two powers on, and Conception Day—one of Macquarie’s favourite events—is on its way. But how did it all get started?

Unlike other unis that celebrate their foundations, MQ Student Union instead chose to celebrate a person: our namesake Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Often referred to as the ‘Father of Australia’, Macquarie was Governor of NSW from 1810 to 1821 [...] He exists in public memory as a legend, a hero for the poor and oppressed, who fought against bureaucratic elite.

Born at the wrong time of year for a good party, however, the Union decid-ed to celebrate Governor Macquarie’s conception – and thus, the birth of Conception Day. When this Day first launched in 1969, MQU was only a few years old, and saw fields of sun-baking bodies, girls grooving in their tie-dyed playsuits, and rock bands in flared pants.

These early Conception Days have a wild reputa-tion among MQ Alumni.

$e Bir% & Concep'o( Da)On this day we celebrate MQ’s namesake, Lach-lan Macquarie. His birthday happened to fall on an unfortunate day during the uni calendar, so instead, we celebrate his conception!Source Amy Way (grapeshot.mq.edu.au)

You could take part in the student-held breakfast on the median strip on Ep-ping Road, a cross-campus streaking spree, or even a gnome convention in the early 80s, where students would nick hundreds of garden gnomes and scatter them all over the lawn. De-spite frequent shenanigans, the celebrations seemed to be all about the music.

Over the years MQU has consistently played host to some pretty big names: You Am I, Eric Clapton, Bluejuice, Josh Pyke, Violent Femmes, Birds of Tokyo, Gyroscope, Peking Duk, Art vs Science—the list goes on.

The line up in 2014 includes The Preatures, Art vs Science, Hermitude, Kingswood, Hatch, Furnace & The Fundamentals, Fin-gers, Ember, Will Clarke, and more; set-times now up on the MQ Website!——————————————Friday 19th September (12.00 ~ 7.00 pm).
