2. Locate the icon.

Page 6: The Visibooks Guide To Palm Devices

GETTING STARTED 3

3. Tap the icon lightly with the stylus or your finger.

Tip: There’s no need to tap hard or “stab” at the screen – simply touching the screen lightly works great. You'll see icons representing the different applications that are installed on your device.

2. Tap the button.

3. Tap the icon to open the on-screen keyboard.

4. Using the keyboard, enter these words by tapping each letter with your stylus:

Write with Graffiti

Tip: Palm handhelds typically include a diagram of how letters, numbers, and certain characters are written using Graffiti 2. If you can't find yours and want to print one out, try visiting this web address: www.palm.com/us/products/input/graffiti2_alphabet.pdf

Graffiti 2 You can also enter text into a Palm handheld using a system called Graffiti 2. Using Graffiti 2 is similar to writing by hand, but each letter or character needs to be entered in a certain way so the handheld can understand it. Graffiti is entered on the writing surface of your Palm (the area below the white areas). Letters, punctuation, and most other strokes are written on the left side. Numbers are written on the right side.

GETTING STARTED 14

3. On the writing surface, write the letter: I

Tip: Draw your letters large and write at a natural pace. Don’t press down or tap too hard while you’re writing – it won’t help the Palm understand your writing, and you could damage the writing surface.

4. Draw a horizontal stroke backwards to delete the letter.

Page 18: The Visibooks Guide To Palm Devices

GETTING STARTED 15

5. Using Graffiti 2, enter this text:

Here's some text I entered using graffiti.

Tip: Palm OS has a built-in Graffiti 2 help screen. To access it, drag your stylus from the writing surface up to the top edge of the screen.

When you are done reviewing the help screen, tap the button.

Page 19: The Visibooks Guide To Palm Devices

GETTING STARTED 16

6. Tap the button to finish the memo and return to the Memo list.

Tip: You won’t be an expert with Graffiti 2 at first, and you might need to consult the chart and use the on-screen keyboard a lot. Don’t worry though – after practice and experience, you may be able to write Graffiti 2 as naturally as you can write on paper.

Share Data With A PC

In this section, you’ll learn how to:

• HotSync with a PC

• Install a new program

Page 99: The Visibooks Guide To Palm Devices

SHARE DATA WITH A PC 96

HotSync with a PC

1. Install the Palm software on your computer.

Tip: Your Palm should have come with a CD that automatically configures your computer to work with your Palm. If you can’t find the CD, you should be able to find the software online by visiting the manufacturer's website.

2. As you are installing the software, you’ll be given several installation options, such whether you want to configure your Palm device to HotSync with Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook.

3. The install process will tell you when it's done and it's safe to connect your Palm device to your computer.

What is HotSyncing? HotSyncing is how personal computers and Palm devices talk to each other. When you HotSync, your PC saves all the new information on your PDA and vice-versa. If your PC has newer information than your PDA, the PC saves its information on the PDA. You should HotSync with your PC every day you use your handheld. Otherwise, you could lose important information, such as phone numbers, appointments, and memos.

Page 100: The Visibooks Guide To Palm Devices

4. Connect your Palm device to your computer.

Tip: Depending on your Palm device, this may be done with a cradle, a cable, or wireless arrangement. Consult your user guide or Web site for specific instructions.

5. In the Home screen, tap the icon.

Page 101: The Visibooks Guide To Palm Devices

Beam memos to Palm users

1. From the Home screen, open Memos.

What’s “beaming?” Beaming is a way for Palm users to send memos, contacts, applications, and other kinds of files to each other without a cable or another computer. Information is sent by infrared (IR)—the same way your TV’s remote control works.

3. In the upper left corner of the screen, tap Memo.

Lock the device

1. From the Home screen, tap the icon.

Locking your Palm device This is a good idea when there’s a lot of private information on the Palm, or if you just don't want other people to mess with it. Locking the Palm is something you should only do if you're sure you can remember your password later. If you forget your password you won't be able to unlock the Palm unless you delete all your records -- including your contacts, memos, and calendar. You can recover the information later by HotSyncing, but HotSyncing won't recover information you entered since the most recent sync.
