Firefighters Visit Schools Students at all of our elementary schools were visited by the Paso Robles Fire Department this past week. The firefighters taught the students about fire safety including the danger of matches, knowing exit drills in your home, and how to call 911 in case of emergency. Thank you Paso Fire for teaching our students how to be safe!

One Cool Earth Corner Big thank you to the families and students that came out to Virginia Peterson Elementary this past Saturday and put in 3 hours of work! We weeded, spread an entire 5 yards of woodchips in the garden, added compost many places including to our orchard, saved bean seeds and we harvested beans and tomatoes and cucumbers! The students even got to paint little pots and plant flowers inside of them. Our next

workday will be in the wintertime, and you can learn how to properly prune fruit trees. Stay tuned. Students in ASES afterschool program at Winifred Pifer Elementary got to plant succulents and take them home this last week! We learned that succulents thrive in sunlight, with little amounts of water making them great drought tolerant plants, and of course lots of love and adoration.

In the Classroom Teachers throughout PRJUSD are employing awesome instructional practices to ensure that all students will have success. This is an example of the kindergarten team at Pat Butler Elementary who collaborated on learning intentions and success criteria (achievement teams instructional planning). Students at Georgia Brown Elementary had Math Talks where they share their thinking process while problem solving. And as a part of the writing process, students at Georgia Brown Elementary work as peer editors

Mrs. Asadoor’s 1st graders at Virginia Peterson Elementary worked hard on a STEM challenge building candy towers.

Students in Mrs. Roots’ 1st grade class at Winifred Pifer Elementary designed a pumpkin catapult as part of learning about the engineering process and problem solving.

VAPA At Kermit King Elementary, students are finishing Paul Klee style paintings. The students will self-evaluate their work after looking back at his work “Ancient Harmony.”

In music, 1st grade students sing while passing a pumpkin on the beat, as one student plays accompaniment on the xylophone. 2nd graders listened to a piece (“Danse Macabre”) by the French composer, Camille Saint-Saens, and colored parts of the picture according to what they heard. Kindergarteners love singing and playing rhythm sticks. They have learned how to hold their sticks in rest position and ready position.

Itzel in Ms. Bell’s class is the first student to earn her orange Recorder Karate Belt! Students in choir are learning to be vocal leaders. Here at Virginia Peterson Elementary, a group leads their section in singing a round.

At Lewis Middle School, beginning art students are working on using cool and warm colors in an optical illusion line design and using line in a small doodle design while practicing with watercolors. They are also building their understanding of 1 and 2 point perspective, and will start creating a cityscape with interesting or comical features soon. They will be focusing on careers within the arts such as illustration and comic book design. Advanced art students have been working with warm and cool colors, tints, shades and tones to create painted portraits of a known celebrity and a self-portrait. Students are also creating nichos for the upcoming holiday of Dia de los Muertos. A nicho involves a portable remembrance altar for a past loved one or admired artist. The students will be writing a

statement about their nicho and its symbolism for whom it represents. They will also be looking at some cultural references that are not only relevant to Mexican heritage but also ancestor celebrations from around the world. Music students at Flamson Middle School have been visiting their feeder elementary schools and teaching the students about band and choir.

Library News Georgia Brown Elementary students enjoy sharing books with friends. Students learned that sharing about books during library group time can inspire other students to read. The excitement was contagious! Kermit King Elementary students are making book bags during recess this week. We want to protect our books and keep them in good shape for the next reader. Winifred Pifer Elementary students received lessons in the library on the library catalog: Destiny Quest. Students practiced these searching techniques on Chromebooks. Pat Butler Elementary students are constructing a “mystery” StickTogether poster in the library. StickTogether is a fun, collaborative, community-building activity where participants

“StickTogether” by applying colored stickers to a large coded grid. There are 12 sections to the poster that they have feverishly been collaborating on. There have been lots of guesses as to what it might be...stay tuned.

Winifred Pifer Elementary Library hosted a pumpkin decorating contest. Students decorated their pumpkins to match one of their favorite books. Entries included Pete the Cat, Captain Underpants, Goldilocks, Waldo, and more!

Early Learning Academy We all know what an advantage students have in their education from early exposure to reading and writing. From a print-rich environment, to journaling, playing with sounds/language, retelling stories to younger peers, and the opportunity to fall in love with books and storytelling, our Early Learning Academy students work on their language and literacy skills through these daily experiences in the preschool classroom. Students enjoy journal writing and revisiting stories read at large group. Students re-tell familiar stories as part of their standards and curriculum. Students create their own stories with pictures, letter like symbols, dictation, and simple words, depending on age and ability.

Students enjoy books individually and in small groups during free choice time. Shelby, a 1st grader at Winifred Pifer, comes in as a guest reader!

Red Ribbon Week Leadership students from Liberty High School did their part this week to help remind the community about Red Ribbon Week. Students tied red ribbons on the trees in Downtown City Park.

Afterschool Programs October 26th was national LIGHTS ON Afterschool day. Families and staff of all local afterschool programs gathered to celebrate in the City Park with music, games, face painting, and family style picnics. SLO county health was present as Champions for Change with healthy food samples and booklets for families. The event is always a beautiful evening and this year the event was extra special due to a birthday celebration and a PRJUSD staff member marriage proposal! Congratulations to PRJUSD PRYDE staff member Brittney Wright!

Child Care Planning Council representative, Raechelle Bowlay-Sutton visited with PRYDE staff during a staff meeting regarding opportunities for education and professional development. PRJUSD was commended on the continuity with afterschool programs. PRJUSD maintains the ownership of afterschool programs and a direct connection with the PRJUSD afterschool staff.

Most school districts utilize outside agencies to operate their afterschool programs. While PRJUSD hires and trains its afterschool staff, they also recognize the value in partnerships with local agencies such as Boys and Girls Club and YMCA. The leaders of all the afterschool programs meet regularly to collaborate and support all students. A Child Care Planning Council representative will attend some of the upcoming meetings to strengthen the bond and support for afterschool programs of all types within our county.
