The Village Voice March 2020 The Village at Appledorn East 630 Hastings Avenue Holland, MI 616-392-1700
Dear Residents:
UPCOMING EVENTS/ OUTINGS
Is March going to come in like a lion? It might be too soon to tell! Let’s hope if it does, it is short lived! Well, we have had a very mild winter, we certainly don’t need it to show up NOW! If it does, Jess certainly has some fun things planned to distract you from any foul weather! Just a quick peek at the calendar shows a trip to Jack Miller for a piano recital, national plant a flower day, some second hand shopping, and even a trip to Van Raalte Farms to see how maple syr-up is made! That’s just a small taste of what is on tap for March! I hope you can make it to at least one of these great things. And don’t forget, invite someone to go with you! It’s always fun with friends! And speaking of friends, have you made any new ones yet? That’s our goal for 2020! Next Happy Hour, go sit by someone new! Thanks again for making your home at The Village. We love having all of you here! This is a great place, let’s all do our part to make sure we keep it that way; share a kind word or an extra smile each day!

Let ’s Do Something Fun! Maple Syrup at the Van Raalte Farm!
This site is significant in the history of Holland. Reverend Albertus Van Raalte, founding father of the City of Holland, purchased the land from the
federal government over 140 years ago for $2.32 per acre. Shortly after the Civil War, the barns were built, and then in 1872 the house was begun. The land remained in the family until it was purchased by the City of Holland in
1983 for $350,000 from the Reimold family. The site has been referred to as “The Maples” due to the large, majestic trees planted by Van Raalte that form a dense canopy in the front of the
house. What Will We do? We will be walking through the Maple Syrup process from tapping the tree to actually getting it ready to taste. Yes, we will get to taste! When? Thursday, March 26 at 1:00 PM. The bus will leave at 12:45 PM. What’s the Cost? $7.00/person Is this outside? Yes. The majority of the time we will be outside. Part of the process takes place inside of a barn, but it will be important to dress for the weather!
Please sign up ASAP so we can get a good count! We need at least 14 people to sign up to be able to go!
