The village hall. What is it for? A place for the people of the community to gather together in shared activity: to celebrate, commemorate, debate, learn about local history, to sing, dance, exercise, to be entertained, to entertain? But what if it became a place where all the darkest secrets, the unconscious desires of that community of ordinary people were unleashed? What would that be like?

Because beneath even the most respectable exterior will lurk some strange impulse, some irrational craving, some inappropriate imagining. Even Mary Whitehouse must have had the odd fruity dream or let out the occasional stinker, whether she liked it or not. None of us are completely in control of our bodies, even less our minds and the surprising, embarrassing, shameful, disgusting, intoxicating thoughts that sometimes pop unbidden to the surface.

Sometimes it’s good to remember, even to celebrate, the fact that we are, after all, just another type of animal. We just happen to wear blouses and operate heavy machinery. Maybe sometimes it’s perfectly healthy to give vent to our irrational impulses, submit to our inner craziness, run into the woods and howl at the moon, scream from the terraces, let rip in the mosh pit. Just so long as we don’t hurt anyone else and are prepared to tidy up after ourselves.

Music is at the heart of this. There’s no rational explanation to why we like listening to music. It interacts with some mysterious part of our brains. And, like nothing else, music can work its way in there like a virus. It can make you cry, make you feel ecstatic, passionate, angry, turned on, queasy. And sometimes, it can just about drive you out of your mind.

BEN LEWISCo-creator / Director

Ben is a writer, director and performer. With Dafydd James, he co-created and directed My Name Is Sue (Soho Theatre / touring, Total Theatre Award 09). He is co-Artistic Director of award-winning theatre company Inspector Sands, jointly creating their shows, If That’s All There Is (Edinburgh International Festival Award 09, Lyric Hammersmith / Traverse Theatre) and Hysteria (Total Theatre Award 06, Southbank Centre/BAC), both of which have toured extensively to countries including China, Russia, Germany and most recently to the Brits Off Broadway Festival in New York.

The company are currently developing their third show, Mass Observation, with the Southbank Centre, the Almeida and the National Theatre Studio. Other work includes, as a writer, two radio plays, Tiny and Blue Sky Thinking, both for BBC Radio 4. He also co-founded comedy theatre company People Can Run, co-creating their shows Aruba (Pleasance / UK tour / Ohio Theater, NYC), Fish Story (Pleasance / Ohio Theater, NYC), The Ushers (Pleasance / UK tour) and the short film Happy Birthday (Just For Laughs Comedy Film Festival, Montreal). Ben trained at LAMDA.

CAI DYFANDesigner

Cai was born an raised in the heart of Snowdonia, North Wales. There, he lived with his family in an old watermill, on the edge of a deep forest. Perhaps it was these these dramatic surroundings that influenced him to pursue a career in creating expressive spaces for performance. Since then, Cai has graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and has been fortunate enough to work on a huge variety of projects, from big budget films, to devised site specific theatre. Recently, Cai designed for Paines Plough & Birmingham Rep’s production of ‘Wasted’ by Kate Tempest, ‘Your Last Breath’ for Curious Directive, and ‘The Passion’ for National Theatre Wales and Wildworks. Recent film work has been an internship on Tim Burton’s forthcoming stop motion animation feature ‘Frankenweenie’, and working for the Greens Team on ‘Pirates of The Caribbean- On Stranger Tides’.

DAFYDD JAMESCo-creator / Musical Director

Dafydd is an award-winning composer, writer and performer. He won the Total Theatre Award for his show ‘My Name is Sue’, which he co-wrote with Ben Lewis. He studied English Literature at Edinburgh University, trained at the London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA) and is about to complete his doctoral thesis in performance at Warwick University. He has recently translated ‘Spring Awakening: The musical’ for the Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and written a play for young people titled ‘Click’, a co-production between Mess up the Mess; Australian Theatre for Young People, the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and the Strangers Project, Nelson. He has also written two episodes for the second series of ‘Gwaith/Cartref’ (Fiction Factory). His critically acclaimed play ‘Llwyth’ was co-produced by Sherman Cymru and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru as part of this year’s British Council Showcase, at the Edinburgh Festival. He is now developing the screenplay.

CATHERINE PASKELLCommunity Promoter

Catherine is a former Creative Associate of National Theatre Wales between 2009-2011. She is also a theatre director originally from Cardiff. At National Theatre Wales she directed The Beach, and interactive theatre game and the company’s fifth production of their first year programme of twelve shows. She also directed The Assembly, a participatory programme where local artists and communities debate and respond to what matters to them. She’s also the conduit for the New Critics programme, designed to train theatre critics in Wales and jointly run with Literature Wales. She trained on the MFA Theatre Directing course at Birkbeck and has a degree in American Studies from Nottingham University. Before working for National Theatre Wales, Catherine directed new work for theatres and companies including Unity Theatre Liverpool, Oldham Coliseum, Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, Trafalgar Studios, Contact Manchester, People Show, Dende Collective, Theatre 503, The Finborough, Tara Arts, Haddo House Opera, Baron’s Court Theatre and the Octagon Theatre Bolton, where she was also Resident Assistant Director.

TESSA SILLARS-POWELLSet & Costume Supervisor

Having recently graduated in Theatre Design from RWCMD, where she developed her skills designing and making set, costume and puppets, Tessa is excited to be back on her second show for NTW, after being part of the design team on The Passion. Tessa enjoys working with a variety of materials to create unusual bespoke costumes, and has had great fun doing so on The Village Social.

FIONA CURTISStage Manager

This is Fiona’s fourth production with National Theatre Wales as Stage Manager. She most of all, enjoyed running around the beach in Prestatyn for ‘The Beach’. She trained at Hope Street in Liverpool as an apprentice and enjoys challenging outdoor theatre and site specific projects. Other companies she has worked with include Volcano and Wired Aerial.

Across the city, hearts are beating and the mating ritual has begun. In the nightclubs, the bus shelters, the back streets and the sand dunes, daring girls and reckless boys engage in a desperate dance while the less fortunate observe and pretend it doesn’t hurt. Created by Frantic Assembly, and staged in Swansea’s richly atmospheric Patti Pavilion, this production is inspired by the Dylan Thomas story ‘Just Like Little Dogs’ and the furtive hours so many of us have spent searching for kindness and warmth in the shadows of the city.

Award-winning writer Kaite O’Reilly has lived all of her life with a visual impairment. For this poetic, provocative and sometimes grotesquely funny piece of theatre, she has taken inspiration from the experiences, attitudes and imagination of disabled and Deaf people from across the whole of the UK. Working with choreographer Nigel Charnock, designer Paul Clay, NTW’s artistic director, John McGrath, and a powerful cast of Deaf and disabled performers, Kaite’s unique texts will explore the endless possibilities of human difference.

From the team that created our startling version of Aeschylus’s The Persians on the military training ranges of mid-Wales, the story of Caius Martius – Coriolanus – is re-imagined in the era of 24-hour news, of celebrity culture, and of a new global polity. Staged in the massive spaces of Dragon Film Studios, with outside broadcasts from the battlefi eld, popular grievances straight to camera, audience participants as the body politic; this Coriolanus is a ‘mash up’ of previous attempts to get to grips with a contrary and perplexing fi gure.

A new commission form Constanza Macras / Dorkypark.In the forests of North Wales

Argentinean Constanza Macras has been setting the world of dance theatre alight with her violent, witty, sensual work. From Johannesburg to Berlin, crowds have fl ocked to see her latest creations. In a special commission for NTW and the Cultural Olympiad, Constanza will create a new site-specifi c show in the forests of North Wales – drawing inspiration from the ancient stories of the Mabinogion, and from our more day-to-day dreamsand fears.
