THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE AT WEST UNIVERSITY NOVEMBER 2017 Desk From the of... RACHELLE... November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and is often thought of as an old person’s disease. It is true that Alzheimer’s occurs mostly in seniors 65 and older; however, up to 5% of those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease have what is called “early onset” where they start experiencing symptoms in their 40s or 50s. Alzheimer’s disease has been at the forefront of research in more recent years. There is a strong emphasis in the biological research world on finding a cure. Millions of dollars are being spent trying to understand the disease and develop medications that will help manage the symptoms if not eradicate them all together. Unfortunately, no one knows what actually causes Alzheimer’s disease, so it is very difficult to find a cure or treatment. During the fall the Alzheimer’s Association sponsors a “Walk to End Alzheimer’s.” Many of our staff and residents participated in the walk in Houston on October 20th. We are hoping that one day soon this “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” will not be needed. Even though there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s all of the researchers say the best medicine is “use it or lose it.” The studies have shown that the more active a person stays physically, mentally, and spiritually the slower the disease process. So go to the gym, read books, work crosswords, keep close contact with your social circles, and stay balanced in your emotional and spiritual activities. Stop the StressStress is any change that

makes a physical, mental, oremotional factor that causesbody or mental tension. Stress isdifferent for every person. Whatone person considers stressfulanother person may not. Thesymptoms of stress can disguisethemselves in every aspect ofour day to day lives. Stressaffects the young as well as theyoung at heart.

Many health problems can becaused by stress, but stress canalso make current health issuesworse. Stress can make a personlose sleep (insomnia), causedepression, cause weight gainand also make digestiveproblems worse, causingdiarrhea or constipation. Stresscan appear in the body as painof any kind and even knockdown our immune system, making us more susceptible toillness and infections.

Some symptoms of too muchstress may include aches andpains, anxiety, memoryproblems or constant worrying.Emotional responses to stressmay include moodiness, angeror feeling overwhelmed.Behavioral responses to stressmay include sleeping too muchor too little, feeling nervous orjumpy and eating too much or

too little. So what can we do about

our stress?

Proper diet and exercise canhelp reduce one’s stress. Reducecaffeine intake and increasewater intake. Josephine’sKitchen has a variety of healthyfood options to choose from.Decaffeinated tea and coffee isalways available. Drink alcohol inmoderation. See yourcommunity bulletin boards foran array of exercise programs tohelp you take control of yourstress level.

Interested in trying moresolitary pursuits to manage yourstress? Try counting to yourselffrom 1 to 100. Go for a walk. Youmay try journaling about yourstressors, or read something tomake you laugh. Listening tomusic is a great stress reliever,as is meditating.

If at any time you feel thatyour stress is unbearable, or youfind yourself growing depressed, please contact your doctorimmediately.

CornerPoetry

The poem I chose for Novemberis actually part of a song written byCeline Dion. We may not think ofthe lyrics of songs as poetry, but youwill see that these lyrics have rhythmand imagery, just as poetry oftendoes. Modern poetry often lacksrhythm, but does have imagery.Notice that the rhyme scheme inDion’s song varies from stanza tostanza. Enjoy, Carolyn Moss
