THE VILLAGE NEWS
BELMONT VILLAGE OF HOLLYWOOD
APRIL 2018
Hello everyone,Thank you to the residents
who joined our Resident Councilthis month. It was a dynamicmeeting and I very muchappreciated the discussion thatensued after my presentation ofour 2017 annual resident andfamily survey results. During thepresentation I was able to sharewith residents (and a familymember in attendance) that ingeneral we received verypositive feedback from thesurveys. Residents and familiesindicated an average of 80% orabove satisfaction with theirexperience of our community. We had a 53% response ratefrom residents, and a 40%response rate from families. Some key takeaways from thesurveys that have helped informthe 2018 management planningprocess include:
Improvements in satisfactionbetween 2016 and 2017, withthree questions that bothresidents and families agreed we
had significantly improved upon:the experience of securityimproved 9.4%; access tospiritual based events improved11%; and perception ofmanagement communicationwith residents and familiesimproved 10.6%.
Residents and families alsogenerally agreed on the keyareas that require improvement.Examples included: theexperience of our transportationservices; the need to establish acomprehensive welcome andintegration program for newresidents; improved interactionswith staff to ensure promptresponses to resident calls forsupport; improved residentprivacy; improved experience ofcustomer service; improving theexperience of maintenance andcleanliness across community;and improving the experience offood and dining room service.
The management team hasbeen able to use the feedbackprovided through thesatisfaction surveys to establishgoals for improvement. Eachdepartment manager hasestablished an action plan sothat we can remain focusedthroughout 2018 on continuousimprovement of our residentand family experience.

Does music help with Alzheimer’s?Why is music so important to ourbrain activity? A recent study showsthat Alzheimer’s patients can recallmemories and emotions and haveenhanced mental performance aftersinging classic hits, show tunes, musicals, and movies. Musicalsespecially are a great reminiscence toolthat provide emotion from a certainhistorical event that an individual hasexperienced, for example, the first songthat was played on his or her weddingday, a musical that was popular in the1960s, or a musician that has asensational hit that he or she cannotforget. By pairing music with everydayactivities, residents can develop arhythm that assists them to recall thememory of any activity, which alsostabilizes cognitive ability, and thebrain is actively stimulated whenresidents that have Alzheimer’s singalong with either entertainment ormovies. Sometimes having musictherapy is a fantastic way to have thelong-term memory be active. Musiccan shift a mood, manage stress, andstimulate positive socializationamongst peers. When music is usedproperly it can shift a mood frommanaging stress, agitation, comfortability, and motor movements. This is because music requires a smallamount of mental processing, andsinging music does not require thecognitive function that is usually notpresent in most Alzheimer’s residents.

This month starts off withApril Fools’ Day, a perfect wayto celebrate the National HumorMonth. Humor is defined as thequality that makes somethinglaughable or amusing.
We often hear that laughter isthe best medicine. It’s true:laughter is a strong medicine. Itdraws people together in waysthat trigger healthy physical andemotional changes in the body.Laughter strengthens yourimmune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protectsyou from the damaging effectsof stress.
Along with other healthawareness events we recognizethis month, Stress Awareness iscelebrated in the month of April.Stress is a normal psychologicaland physical reaction to thedemands of life. However, stresscan have negative effects suchas causing damage to yourhealth, relationships or quality oflife. Start practicing stressmanagement techniques today.
Many people benefit frompractices such as deep
breathing, maintaining a healthydiet, exercising regularly, andsimply by getting enough sleep.Take time for yourself – take abubble bath, go dancing, or goto a comedy show for somelaughs.
Humor is a wonderfulstress-reducer and antidote toupsets. It is clinically proven tobe effective in combating stress, although the exact mechanism isnot known. Experts say a goodlaugh relaxes tense muscles, speeds more oxygen into yoursystem and lowers your bloodpressure. So tune into yourfavorite sitcom on television.Read a funny book. Call a friendand chuckle for a few minutes. Iteven helps to force a laugh oncein a while. You’ll find your stressmelting away almost instantly.
