A Special Message From Mayor Ed FareDear Friends,
S ummer in Valley Stream is finally here! We are well on our way to a great season of fun in the sun, with plenty of activities for everyone.
Whether your preference is the fast paced thrill of organized sports, cultural events or high energy camp-like programs for the children, or perhaps a more laid back approach to the balmy weather, there is plenty to do here in our beautiful village.
Our fantastic pool complex is the centerpiece of Valley Stream’s recreational programs. With the addition of a large, attractive shade structure, even the hottest days are more comfortable for our pool patrons. Fun and colorful playgrounds in our parks keep our youngsters entertained for hours.
As always, our summer concert series on the Village Green will bring the sounds of a wide variety of popular band and orchestral selections. Mark your calendars for August 9th Doo Wop comes to Valley Stream! Be sure to bring your chairs and blankets to the beautiful open air venue and settle in for a summer of musical entertainment.
Please check the summer recreation guide that was recently mailed to your home and keep it handy. It is full of helpful information about all the programs offered to keep everyone busy all summer long, right here at home in Valley Stream.
Our entire Village Board joins me in wishing all a happy, fun-filled summer!
MEMORIAL DAY... Reflection, Respect, Remember
Sincerely,
M emorial Day 2017 dawned damp and
rainy, but that did not dampen the
resolve of many Valley Streamers who participated
in this year’s parade and solemn services at the
Memorial Plaza, joined by Grand Marshall, Al
Goldberg.
In commemorating those who gave their lives in
service to our nation, Mayor Fare remarked, “Our
veterans hold an important and deeply special
place in the fabric of our community. We enjoy
our freedoms today because of them, we gather today to honor them, and we will never forget them and the
loved ones they have left behind.”
FLEET SERVICES
S afety and security, road paving and repairs, sanitation services…just part of the story when we consider the many responsibilities of Valley Stream’s
Department of Fleet Services. Led by Fleet Services Supervisor Tim Graham, and Assistant Supervisor Rob Laino, and comprised of a group of
nine dedicated and highly skilled vehicle specialists, Fleet Services is a vital cog in the wheel of village services. This team is responsible for more than 100
municipal vehicles that keep our village moving forward, including garbage & recycling trucks, payloaders, backhoes, street sweepers, and public safety and
code enforcement automobiles. Fleet Services is also tasked with the care and maintenance of the entire Valley Stream Fire Department fleet of engines,
ladder trucks and other response vehicles. It is a major responsibility and one that the crew takes very seriously.
Located at the Village’s Public Works complex known as Arlington Yard, Fleet Services occupies a large building that, at any point in time, may have a dozen
or so vehicles within, undergoing maintenance and repairs. In addition, several employees of the department are designated as specialized welders and
fabricators, possessing skills that enable them to perform in-house tasks that would otherwise not be possible. The more professional work that can be done
by village workers is a win-win for the taxpayers; saving money and keeping more vehicles on the road.
Under the supervision of Graham, the entire fleet of vehicles undergoes scheduled maintenance on a rotational basis, optimizing efficiency and preventing
vehicle down-time. Even the lightest equipment in the fleet, such as small tractors and “ride-on” lawn care equipment are kept to a strict repair and upkeep
schedule.
Maintaining Valley Stream’s 90 miles of roadways, covering nearly a 5-square mile area, is no
small task. In all kinds of weather and through every season, our Department of Fleet Services
remains at the ready, keeping Valley Stream moving ahead!
S pring cleaning and summer repairs go hand-in-hand, so
now is a good time to stop by Valley Stream’s Building
Department to find out what is required for any home improvement
work you may have in mind. For instance, did you know that most
fencing, window installation, new driveways and sidewalks all
require village permits?
Visit our friendly and helpful Building Department staff
to learn more, or call 516-825-4200.
O nce again, our
Village has received
Tree City designation
from the Arbor Day
Foundation, in recognition
of our ongoing efforts to
plant more trees than are
removed due to disease
and danger. With the
help of our local scouts,
the Village continues to
promote sustainability, maintaining the many thousands of trees that grace our village
properties.
V alley Stream’s Head Groundskeeper Eugene Boening (far right) taught
our area scouts the importance of tree preservation, while demonstrating
proper planting techniques. The youngsters got hands-on experience honing their
horticultural skills while learning important lessons in environmental conservation.
Engine 344 was officially dedicated to the Valley Stream Fire Department’s fleet at a traditional Wet Down” ceremony. On hand were (L-R) Trustee Wright, Village Clerk Fumagalli, Fleet Services Assistant Supervisor Rob Laino and Mayor Fare, along with Fire Department personnel.
