A graduate of Davidson College, Halyburton was deployed to Vietnam aboard the aircraft carrier ISS Independence in May of 1965. Following his release, Halyburton was assigned to the Naval ROTC Unit at Georgia Tech and completed his graduate work in journalism at the University of Georgia. He subsequently served many years as a professor on the faculty of the United States Naval War College in Newport, RI.
