SUMUN L. PENDAKUR, ED.D.
Dr. Sumun L. Pendakur is a scholar-practitioner whose work focuses on social justice and racial equity. She plays a key leadership role at the University of Southern California (USC) Race and Equity Center. Pendakur is the Chief Learning Officer and Director of the USC Equity Institutes within the center. The Equity Institutes offer an action-learning series to help leaders at universities develop ways to improve racial equity on their campus.
“It’s a tremendous honor to serve as commencement speaker for the University of Michigan-Flint,” said Pendakur. “Serving as speaker gives me an opportunity to recognize the journey of students who have persevered, sometimes struggled, and sometimes thrived. It gives me a chance to pay homage to many of their families who supported them along the way.”
Pendakur grew up in Evanston, Illinois. She received her bachelor of arts in history and women’s studies from Northwestern University. She earned her master of arts in higher education administration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and her doctorate in higher education leadership from the USC Rossier School of Education.
“As a Wolverine, I share in the new graduates’ excitement. Having a chance to experience a Michigan education, I now celebrate these graduates who are ready to tackle all the thorny problems in life, and to do so with courage, skill, and joy.”
Prior to joining the Center, Pendakur held roles as the Assistant Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Harvey Mudd College, and as Director for USC’s Asian Pacific American Student Services. Her research and scholarship focuses on critical race theory, Asian American and Pacific Islander students, change agents, and institutional transformation.
She encourages graduates to consider ways to contribute to social justice, regardless of their career path.
“If you choose so, you can be a change agent in your sphere of influence. The types of questions you ask, the doors you open to others, the way you embed kindness and empathy in the workplace, these are all ways to bring forms of justice into places that are not always just.”

CANDIDATES GRADUATING WITH HONORS-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Undergraduate candidates wearing gold honor cords over their graduation robes are students who have achieved, in the course of their studies at the university, an overall grade point average that qualifies them to be recognized by their school or college as candidates graduating with honors. These candidates are identified in the following lists by the phrase “With Honors,” “With High Honors,” “With Distinction,” “With High Distinction,” or “With Academic Distinction” depending on the particular degree program. These honor designations are subject to revision based on final semester grades. Graduating with honors recognizes a superior level of ability, a high distinction of scholarship, and an exemplary record of achievement.

CHRISTOPHER SANJURJO MONTALVO
Christopher Sanjurjo Montalvo found his sense of belonging at UM-Flint. And he found a professional path to helping others. “The University of Michigan-Flint has granted me so many chances to discover my place in the world,” Sanjurjo Montalvo said.
Sanjurjo Montalvo grew up in poverty in the Bronx. When his single mom lost her job, they lived in shelters for several months when he was very young. “My mom always told me education was going to be my way out,” said Montalvo.
As he grew older, Sanjurjo Montalvo knew he wanted to find a way to tackle systemic social issues that leave some communities without proper resources.
After serving in the U.S. Army, he found his answer at UM-Flint. Sanjurjo Montalvo chose the university for its strong social work program. His wife, Olivia Miller, is also a student at the university. The couple have three-year-old twin daughters, Allison and Serena.
Last summer, he traveled to South Africa for study abroad. There, he learned about communities connecting through their shared humanity, such as community gatherings and public expression through the arts. He has been heavily involved with the Phi Alpha Honor Society, and has interned since last year with Mpowering My Success, a UM-Flint program that provides support to students previously in foster care.
Sanjurjo Montalvo hopes to leverage what he has learned at the university to help improve the Bronx as a politician. He is graduating with his bachelor’s degree in social work.
“Through the guidance, the diversity, and the strong community that is the University of Michigan-Flint, I have been able to grow,” said Sanjurjo Montalvo. “I have met diverse people from all backgrounds who share the same ideologies of social justice, passion for helping others, and personal development. UM-Flint inspired me to reach for more.”
STUDENT SPEAKER-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ANDREA DRAHEIM
Andrea Draheim considers her comfort with being a commencement speaker as one of many ways in which she grew as a person at UM-Flint. “I was quiet, even timid, when I started my educational journey at University of Michigan-Flint. I never loved presenting, not even to a few people,” said Draheim, who is graduating with her bachelor’s degree in nursing.
“My professors really pushed me to get out of my comfort zone,” she said, adding that she now enjoys presenting to large groups.
“Over the course of my education, I learned much about myself, and grew both personally and professionally through my academic, clinical, and volunteer experiences. In my time at the university, my instructors saw my potential and helped pull me out of my shell and pushed me to always put forth my best effort. It has been exhilarating.”
Draheim tutored her fellow nursing students during her college career, which also helped her tackle her shyness. “I strive to be a leader and a role model for the students I tutor and greatly enjoy being part of their success,” she said.
Draheim utilized the skills she learned at UM-Flint to volunteer throughout the region, including with the Thomas Smith Memorial (Teen Heart Check), the Crim Fitness Foundation and with other opportunities offered through the School of Nursing. Her career plans are to be an emergency room nurse. She worked with the Hurley Medical Center emergency department in Flint last summer, and credits her education at UM-Flint for giving her the confidence to succeed within that intense setting.
“The supportive staff and faculty contributed to my success and pushed me to do my absolute best all the time,” Draheim said.

#UMFLINTGRAD 26UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN-FLINT COMMENCEMENT APRIL 20199
THE ACADEMIC MACE & MEDALLION-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------University of Michigan-Flint ceremonies begin with the Faculty Marshal carrying the university mace. Friends presented the University of Michigan-Flint mace to the institution in 1993. The shaft is four and one-half feet in length and is made of mahogany. The brass orb on top of the shaft is hollow and circumscribed with a band bearing the name of the institution. Within the orb is a paper bearing the names of those who contributed to the funding of the mace and atop the orb is a brass disk inscribed with the seal of the University of Michigan-Flint.
Chancellor Susan E. Borrego was presented with the Medallion on behalf of Academic Affairs upon her arrival to the University of Michigan-Flint as Chancellor and prior to her inauguration. The Medallion is a bronze disk that shows the seal of the University of Michigan-Flint that is worn around the neck during formal ceremonial events such as Commencement.
THE UNIVERSITY FLAG-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Flag of the University of Michigan-Flint represents the individual character of the campus and its close association with the University of Michigan. The “union” next to the staff, which identifies the University of Michigan both by its colors and its legend, is overlapped by the “device.” The uniting by this means of “union” and “field” indicates the bond between University of Michigan-Flint and the other schools of the university and the common purpose they share. The legend “Flint,” delineated in the university colors at the flag’s own left, complements the “union.” The “field” takes its colors from a part of the varicolored flame of the search for truth. The “device,” derived from the University seal, is the lamp of enlightenment resting on the book of learning. The white of the device’s own field supplies a philosophic association as the color of humane letters and a historic association as the color of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, parent college of all.
Professor Emeritus Walter J. Gores of the College of Architecture and Design, designer and maker of all University Flags, fashioned this flag for the Flint College; which is now the University of Michigan-Flint.

THE ACADEMIC COSTUME-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The colorful gowns and hoods worn by faculty members at commencement and other academic ceremonies represent the degrees, disciplines, and alma maters of the wearers. The American academic costume tradition, imported from England, dates to Colonial days.
GOWNS - The style of the academic gown differs with the academic degree it represents. The bachelor gown has plain, full sleeves and is without velvet facing down the front. The masters and specialist gowns are identified by long narrow sleeves that are “blind” at the cuff, with slits at elbow-length for the arms. The doctoral gown has full sleeves with velvet chevrons and velvet facing down the front.
Academic gowns are usually black, but some universities permit gowns in the school’s colors. The velvet trimming on the doctor’s gowns is traditionally black, though some universities (including the University of Michigan-Flint) permit the velvet to be of the color distinctive of the discipline to which the degree pertains.
HOODS - The masters hood (short), specialist hood (intermediate), and the doctoral hood (long) carry the distinctive design and the colors of the university where the degree was awarded.
The doctoral, specialist, and masters hoods for University of Michigan-Flint candidates have the following velvet colors:
Accounting, Business Administration ....................................................... drabCommunication ..................................................................................silver grayEducation ............................................................................................. light blueLiterature and Arts ..................................................................................... whiteNursing ..................................................................................................... apricotPhysical Therapy ........................................................................................... tealPublic Administration ..................................................................peacock bluePublic Health ...........................................................................................salmonPhilosophy ........................................................................................... dark blueScience ..........................................................................................golden yellow
CAPS - Caps vary in style from the traditional black mortarboard to eight-, six-, and four-corner tams, and Elizabethan- style caps. The mortarboard may be of any appropriate material, such as cotton, poplin, rayon, or silk, to match the gown. Velvet is reserved for holders of doctorates. A long tassel is fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap.
OTHER APPAREL - Several graduates are wearing cords or sashes as part of the academic costume. Other than the gold cords that stand for graduating with honors, some of the cords and sashes indicate academic achievement in the other areas such as Service Learning. Other cords and sashes are awarded to students for their participation in clubs and organizations.

“My mom always told me education was going to be my way out,” said Sanjurjo Montalvo.
There, he learned about ways in which communities connect through shared humanity, such as community gatherings and public expression through the arts.
Draheim utilized the skills she learned at UM-Flint to volunteer throughout the region, including with the Thomas Smith Memorial Foundation (teen heart screening), the Crim Fitness Foundation and with other opportunities offered through the School of Nursing.
