The Victoria Folk Music Society Annual Community Picnic • Saturday, August 10th! • 3 p.m.– 7 p.m. • Esquimalt Gorge Park, 1070 Tillicum Road, Victoria, B.C. •

Scottish songwriter Frank Burkitt cannot wait to perform at Victoria Folk Music Society as part of a 10-show tour across BC for his debut tour of Canada in July 2019. Armed with just his guitar and voice, his show will be an intimate and personal showcase of his music.

He will charm you with his anecdotes and storytelling, before captivating you with intelligently-written songs that are

inspired by his love of American Roots and Scottish Folk music. He has been living in New Zealand for the past 5 years and formed The Frank Burkitt Band in Wellington, where they recently were announced as the Vodafone NZ Music Award winners for Best Folk Artist 2019.

Frank is touring Canada as a solo artist however, so this is a rare chance to hear his songs performed intimately and raw.

Brittany Jean is a singer-songwriter in America’s ‘Pacific Northwest’, currently living in the tiny, apple town of Brewster, WA. Brittany’s style is rooted in the folk and country music she has loved all her life—her own favorite singers and songwriters (such as Alison Krauss, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot) have influenced her writing, shaping and infusing her personal sound.

Brittany has released three albums, all recorded in Nashville, TN. Her newest album (Wander With Me) released in 2018, is her best work yet.

From songs about being brave and standing tall, to songs about learning to dance again, Brittany’s acoustic and heartfelt music is an invitation—won’t you wander with her?

Paddy Hernon & Rick Van Krugel began playing together nearly half a century ago when they first met in 1970. Paddy is a walking, talking, singing, encyclopedia of sea songs & shanties, ballads, bawdy songs, drinking songs, yarns, jokes, and tall tales from Ireland, Scotland, England, and international waters. Rick calls himself an “advanced primitive” mandolin player, self-taught through accompanying singers by ear

since 1964 with musical specialties of rural blues, southern old-time music, jug-band, and general good old American hokum (look that one up!)

Theirs is authentic and infectious music acquired from over a century of combined encounters, meetings, conversations, mishaps, jams, parties, and general frivolity…the human story. If you don’t know either or both of this pair, get ready for a very pleasant surprise!

July 28 ~ Paddy Hernon & Rick van Krugel

Prairie born and raised, Kevin Mitchell has been on the west coast for 25 years. In the vein of Alt-Country Roots, Folk, and Blues, his songs are honest and engaging, and performed with a unique style that plays like the band. His songs tell stories about people, places, and things extracted from his native prairie roots, to his life now living on BC’s Denman Island.

Ruth Rae loves playing and teaching

music. For her, playing the upright bass is a form of coming home. She has had a long and wide range of musical adventures from a very young age, starting with Royal Conservatory piano and then adding in wind instruments. She adores the foundation of sound and rhythm the low resonant tones that upright bass provides, and its particular voice that both leads and follows.

Barcelona-based Canadian singer-songwriter Katou presents Spirit Rubble, a new repertory of original songs about the spirit yearning for freedom, communion, and finding its own little place in the grand scheme of things.

For the last 15 years, songwriting has accompanied Katou as a kind of diary. Inspired by wandering balladeers, she began living her dream of singing on the street 10 years ago, first playing her own music, then collaborating in different projects. From 2012–2017, she sang in the group Radio Fanjul, performing old, popular songs from around the world and recording three albums. After a few years’ break from songwriting, Katou returns to give voice to Spirit Rubble.
