Dear Parents and Friends
There is a lot of excitement in the air about our SJV Musical that will be held on 5 and 6 September at Iona College. All children from Prep – 6 will be participating on both evenings. There will be plenty of information coming home in the next few weeks so please keep an eye out. We also need a few helpers so if you can assist with the following things please let
me know:
Set and prop construction and design
Creating a programme for the musical
Videoing one evening so parents could purchase a DVD
Information will be available soon about ticketing for the event.
Another reason to get excited…State of Origin! On Wednesday 5 June children can wear their team colours to get into the spirit. We are asking if families could support our Year 6 Graduation celebrations by donating a gold coin on the day. If children don’t have a NSW or QLD jersey they
can wear the colours of another team shirt/jersey.
Our attendance level is currently under our minimum goal of 90%. We know the link between student learning, wellbeing and increased attendance is clear. This week we had a surprise for the year level with the
best attendance – Congratulations Year 3! There will be another surprise coming soon.
Here are the attendance levels for SJV currently:
Year 6 – 84.2%
Year 5 – 92.3%
Year 4 – 87.7%
Year 3 – 93.2%
Year 2 – 85.9%
Year 1 – 87.8%
Prep – 84.7%
Walkathon sponsorship cards were sent home today. The weekends are a great time to ask friends, family and neighbours to sponsor your child. There are many great prizes
for children to win and we will officially launch the prizes on Monday morning.
In God We Trust.

2019 Maths Olympiad
Congratulations to our Maths Olympiad team for completing their very 1st contest yesterday. They really stretched their brains in attempting to solve 5 challenging problems and that is an achievement in itself. The Olympiads are not just about achieving the highest possible score. One of the main aims of the Olympiads program is to encourage students to develop new problem solving skills. We look forward to our 2nd contest on
19th June.
Can you solve the following problem from yesterday’s contest?
Jacob runs at 4 kilometres per hour uphill for half an hour. Then, he runs downhill, along the same route, at 5 kilometres per hour.
How many minutes does Jacob take to come down the hill?

RELIGION
National Sorry Day Sunday 26 May
This Sunday is National Sorry Day. It is an important time to remember the injustices done to the Stolen Generations (Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities). This day also gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards
healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.
A Prayer for National Sorry Day
Holy Father, God of love
Give us the courage to accept the realities of our history
so that we may build a better future for our nation.
Teach us to respect all cultures.
Teach us to care for our land and waters.
Help us to share justly the resources of this land.
Help us to bring about spiritual and social change
to improve the quality of life for all groups in our communities,
especially the disadvantaged.
Help young people to find true dignity and self-esteem by your Spirit.
May your power and love be the foundations
on which we build our families, our communities and our nation,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Bayside Track & Field Carnival
The information packs for the Bayside District Track & Field Trials scheduled for Thursday and Friday 30 & 31 May (respectively) have now been forwarded to parents. I seek parental support in ensuring all the forms have been completed and returned to the school as soon as possible. SJV
singlets will be distributed to competitors next week.
SJV Singlets
A friendly reminder that the SJV singlets distributed to competitors for all our Inter-School carnivals are on a ‘borrow only’ basis. Please ensure these are laundered and returned to the school via the class pouches or directly to the office as soon as possible after the event. Thank you for
your attention to this.
SJV Showcase
We continue to showcase our students’ sporting achievements in outside school sporting activities. Information and photos for all sporting events
(including local sporting events) can be sent to [email protected]
Please be mindful that when sending in photos they must contain only SJV students due to privacy and confidentiality legislation.
Thank you for your continued support of ‘all things sport’ at SJV.

LIBRARY
This week is Library & Information Week with the theme Truth, Integrity, Knowledge (TIK). It is a week to consider the important role that libraries play in our community, work, and family life. I know many of our children are members of our council libraries and enjoy the books and activities they provide, especially during the holidays. If you are not a member, I highly recommend that you sign up for a free membership. Be a passionate reader, borrow a book for yourself, and
read side by side with your child - is there anything better?
On Wednesday we came together at 11am for National Simultaneous Storytime and joined over 1,085,587 participants across Australia and
New Zealand reading Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove. With our alpaca puppets and maracas, much fun was had by all.
Last week the school donated books we no longer require to Books-4-PNG. I took a tour of the warehouse and was impressed by the organisation and the very generous volunteers busy working. The much appreciated donations they receive provide resources to those living in remote areas,
making reading possible for children in PNG.
Congratulations to this week’s Best Friends of the
Library 4S and 1S.

SCHOOL PHOTO ORDERS
Orders for school photos will close on Wednesday 29 May. All orders are to be placed online at studiokirby.com.au/schools—enter the school
code SJV19 and the student ID (on the envelope that was sent home with your child). If the student ID is unknown, enter KIRBY as the student ID.
REPRESENTATIVE SPORT SINGLETS—PLEASE RETURN
There are still a substantial number of SJV representative sport singlets that have not been returned from the recent Catholic Cross Country
Carnival. Could parents please ensure these singlets are laundered and returned to the office urgently.
P & F NEWS
The Walk-a-Thon is in just over 2 weeks! Gee the 7th of June has come around quickly. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered their time already, but we still needs lots more to make this event possible. Even if you can only spare an hour,
please let us know.
The children will leave the school grounds at 9:30am and walk down to Lota Park. At the park they will rotate through a variety of different activities. This year we have Rookies2Reds, AFL Auskick, Ginger Soccer, Bayside Dance, Billy's Buddies Rugby League and Pocket Rockets all confirmed to attend. The children can also get their hair spray painted, nails painted, tattoos and zinc. We've also added a cake stall. Last year we were able to get the adult to child ratio down to 1 adult to 5 children in the lower
grades and we would love to be able to do that again.
The Sponsorship cards were sent home today, with a list of all the prizes that are up for grabs. We have been so lucky to be supported by our local businesses. At the back of the newsletter you will find a list of our sponsors for this year. We urge you to support those businesses who
support our school.
If you can help in any way, either on the day, providing prizes for the kids or baking for the cake stall, please get in contact with Donna or
Jacquie.

VOLUNTEERS—MANDATORY STUDENT PROTECTION TRAINING
All volunteers (including parents) must be registered with the school and complete ‘Student Protection Training’.
The training is available on the BCE public website under the Student Protection and Code of Conduct training for
volunteers and other personnel link http://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/student-protection/Documents/
BCE_Volunteer_OtherPersonnel_Training_page/index.html The completed Volunteer and Other Personnel
Registration Form should then be returned to the school office to confirm the training has been undertaken. Parents
do not require a Positive Notice Blue Card. However, all non-parent volunteers (including grandparents) must hold a current Positive Notice
Blue Card for Volunteers. The volunteer cannot be engaged by the school until the Positive Notice Blue Card is received. Applications for Blue
Cards are available from Qld Government Blue Card Services at https://www.bluecard.qld.gov.au/applications/applications.html
The mandatory Student Protection Training must be completed every two years to continue to
volunteer at the school. Parents/caregivers should check with the office if they are unsure when their training is due.
MUSIC AND DRAMA
Calling all helpers for our ‘cutting and sewing’ day for the musical!! The date is Saturday 1 June in the SJV staffroom
between 1pm and 3:30pm. Please bring scissors, cutting mats, pins, ruler and a machine if you have one. We will be
creating the sailors’ neckerchiefs and pirate sashes. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided as a thank you!

SJV MOBILE APPLICATION—BCE CONNECT
The BCE Connect mobile app is available for our parent community. BCE Connect makes it
easy for you to keep up with school events and information.
Access is restricted to parents of students at our school and a logon is required. To be able to
logon to the app you must have previously logged into the Parent Portal to activate your
account. The login details are the same as per the Parent Portal.
The latest version of BCE Connect allows us to send announcements as a push notice to
anyone who has installed the app and selected St John Vianney’s and saved as a Favourite, for
example a bus running late from an excursion. Make sure you have notifications enabled on
your device for the app when you install it.
The push notification feature may be used to send an emergency announcement or to highlight
an important message. The notification presents on a mobile device similar to a SMS text
message. You do not have to open the app to see the notification.
Other features include newsletters, school forms and the ability to notify of student absences at the touch of a button.
The best experience is if you log into the app (which is done with the same username and password as the Parent Portal) the app will enable you
to stay logged in for up to a year.
BCE Connect is available to download from:
Google Play Store
Apple App Store
