February Meeting Minutes
The February meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by 1
st Vice
President Brian Dahl. Treasurer’s Report Paul Thompson reported on the current funds available. Member Rosters were distributed. The remaining will be mailed. During the year, changes submitted are updated on the online Member Roster. January Meeting Minutes - The January meeting minutes were approved as printed in the February newsletter. Gwenda Valentine indicated there are a few extra Member Rosters. Contact her if you would like an extra one. Guests were introduced by Jeff Scott. Two new members were voted in: John Losure, Jim Ross. New Cars - Upgrades & Misc News - Snow is on the ground, so not much happening. However, Jeff Scott reported they attended the Ron Fellows Spring Mountain Driving School in Phoenix with their 2016 Z06. Seems Liz Scott may have caught the bug. CSCC racing ladies better lookout…new competition is on the horizon. Tanya Cox reported the seats for her 1961 convertible are done. Not in the car yet, but probably will be just in time for the spring events. Past Event Reports - See articles, results and pictures of most events represented in the newsletter. CSCC Autocross Timing Training Class- Walt Jenkins reported about 17 people showed for the first training
date. Training was complete with remote cars for a more realistic start/stop testing. As you might guess, some attendees were distracted by the toys. Another timing training is set for February 13. Merchandise Update – Rick Prescott reported plenty of club shirts available, long sleeve, short sleeves, and even a few more sweatshirts available, but limited sizes. Upcoming Events – Check the Events Calendar on the webpage for even more events, specific information, updates, and online registration. March 5, Saturday – CSCC Highway Cleanup Program. Not a glamorous job, but somebody has to do it. Join fellow CSCC members for this community volunteer opportunity. Afterwards, have fun with breakfast at Sarge’s. March 12, Saturday - Rocky Mountain Region Update; Lorren Loewen reported on the RMR Regional Kickoff Banquet, including awards, and new this year – Casino Night. It will just be fun to be there with other CSCC members. Registration is open. (See flyer in this newsletter) Planning ahead….. July 13-16 Black Hills Corvette Classic Chris Capshaw gave a run- down on the annual event starting in Sious City and ending in Spearfish, S. D, Chris will be coordinating for CSCC members interested in going. There
will be lots of Corvettes, events, tours, and something for everyone. Then if you really want to make it a Corvette summer, head back down the road to Omaha, Nebraska for the NCCC 2016 Convention. July 17-22 – NCCC Convention; “Roar into Omaha”. Walt Jenkins will be coordinating list of CSCC members and caravan plans. There are already 19 registered. September 7 – 13 – Vettes and Jets on the Lex – Chris Capshaw will be coordinating this trip for interested CSCC members. Door prize winners: Lorren Loewen, Susan Umland, and Jane Creighbaum. Good News/Bad News Suitcase - The suitcase was returned by Bob Balink. However, since attendance was down due to snow storms, again, the suitcase will be held over to the March meeting so more members will have a chance at whatever surprises Bob Balink has planned. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m. and everyone pitched in to stack the chairs.

How did you meet? They met in the high school band (played drum and percussion and trombone) and then started dating.
Where are you from? They both grew up in Dover, Delaware.

They were also stationed in Germany (for 10 years), Panama (for 3 years), Arkansas, Florida, Oklahoma, and lastly Colorado Springs, since 1997. Ann was a stay at home Mom and volunteered at school. After the kids were grown and gone, she worked in medical offices.

They were in college and bought it on a whim when they were driving down the street and saw 3 Corvettes in a row for sale, one of them was the ’61.
How did your love of Corvettes come about? They were always a fan of the Route 66 show, back in the 1960’s. This sparked their Corvette interest. Thanks for the interview Richard and Ann!

Mag Chloride
If you have a warped brain like mine, you sometimes wonder things like just how bad the mag chloride they use on the roads is for my cars. I have aluminum, chrome, steel, stainless steel, and all kinds of painted components that might be affected. Here’s what I found. Most of the Magnesium Chloride in North America comes from Great Salt Lake brine. It’s a common compound found in fertilizers, wallboard, animal feed, etc. and is used primarily for dust control and road stabilization. It’s second most popular use is for trashing our beautiful cars on the roads around here so we don’t have to crash into one another while we learn to drive on ice and bald tires. Mag Chloride works by preventing a bond between the ice and the road surface, allowing it to become slushy and carried off by plows or cars. It creates heat as it dissolves. Regular salt works down to about 15 degrees F, but some of the higher performance products like Calcium Chloride can work down to -20 degrees F. There actually was a study done by the University of Colorado, Boulder. What it found was that Mag Chloride and its close brothers, Sodium Chloride and Calcium Chloride, are highly corrosive to certain materials. Depending on conditions, each salt can be more corrosive than the other. Not a big difference between them, but they all have different effects on the environment—some good, some bad. The way the salts work is they splash up onto your car’s components and then it dries there, as a crystallized coating. It activates every time you have a water splash, puddle, rain, or high humidity day. Modern components of your car, like painted components, and zinc plated or coated steels, don’t have much to worry about, but uncoated components like brake discs are at risk. Earlier cars did not use zinc coated panels and even frame components had little if any paint on them. They are the biggest concern. Another study, done by Purdue, proved that calcium chloride is twice as corrosive as magnesium chloride on cement.-- Mag Chloride is applied at 200 to 300 lbs. per lane mile (thought you needed to know that), and there is a law, the Stormwater Management Act (I did not confirm it) that certain states must stop using abrasives like sand in the next 10 years and use chemicals exclusively. Evidently, sand plugs up drains, creates silica dust clouds, and is very hard on water treatment systems.
This turned out to be one of those research projects that the more I dug the more things became blurred and the less room I had to put it in. I suggest you wash off the salt whenever you can and due to the extra volume that must be carried on the roadways regardless of weather, expect more and more liquid products to be used as time goes by.

REGISTER NOW for the MICHELIN BASH
In last month’s column, I previewed major upcoming events at
the National Corvette Museum for 2016. Registration for
NCM’s kickoff onsite event April 28-30th
, the Michelin Bash, is
now open online at www.corvettemuseum.org and runs
through Wednesday, April 13th
: lifetime members $15,
members $20, and non-members $30.
The schedule of events is very impressive! Including a
display of 2017 Stingrays and Z06s. The agenda also offers a
seminar by the GM Team of engineers and designers on
what’s new for the next year’s models.
Other seminars feature the 7th Generation navigation system
by Paul Pearson, Jim Mero on driving the Nurburgring track,
and classroom sessions for C5-C6-C7 by Corvette Specialist
Paul Koerner (limited space requires pre-registration). You
can watch and ask questions as the GM Performance Build
Center Team completely disassembles and assembles the
LT4 engine.
For those eager to do hands-on, there will be road tours,
visits to local attractions, and laps around the Motorsports
Park track.
Join the Museum If you’ve been thinking about becoming a
member of the Museum, opportunities await. You can sign
up for a new Family Membership at the price of an
Individual…only $50 (a savings of $50); Individual members
can upgrade to Family membership for $25. These offers run
through February 29th, so if you plan to be at the Bash or visit
the Museum, now’s the time to join!
NOTES On February 2
nd GM opened the all-new 111,420 sq-ft
Powertrain Performance and Racing Center. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to enhance the development processes for the company’s diverse racing programs. It’s not unusual to see a Corvette in a spy movie, but what about using one in real-life operations. Such is the case for a black Z06, now displayed at the Museum. The FBI special agent owner, code name Green Kryptonite, spent three years as a double agent against the Russian military intelligence. The Z06 was one of his personal cars used in counter-intelligence ops! I’ll have $10 raffle tickets at the March meeting for a 2016 Torch Red Corvette convertible offered by the Museum;
drawing April 30th at the Michelin Bash.
