It was a lovely day as we headed out to MacRitchie Reservoir.

The children had a blast as there was so much to explore and experience!

Mass Activity

Children were taught a new game!

It is a modified game of ‘Dog and bone’. The children were split into 2 groups:

‘Sticks’ were scattered in the middle of the 2 groups.

When the signal was given, the teams would dash forward and attempt to collect and deposit

as many sticks as they can back to their base.

Sticks collected from each team will be counted at the end of the game

To ensure safety, ground rules were set:

- No pushing

- No snatching from a friend who has picked a stick off the ground

As the children become accustomed to the game, additional rules were added:

- Each child from Joy and Peace was only allowed to pick 1 stick at a time

- Love children could pick 3 sticks each

- Children can attempt to ‘steal’ the sticks from the opposing team until the time runs out.


Look what fun they had!

Through this activity, children will develop their spatial awareness and reaction time

as they try to avoid crashing into their friends while they journey to and from the base.

Joy The Joy children has a go at the simplified version ‘Dog and Bone’

The children divided themselves into 2 groups.

At both home bases, numerals [1-7] were written in chalk on the ground.

Each child stood on 1 numeral.

When their number was called, those who were standing on the said number will sprint forward to pick up a

stick before returning to their base.


This activity seeks to improve children’s reaction time and focus as they listen attentively for the

number called and react appropriately.

Reaction time in children of the same age may vary.

Some took a longer time to react while others moved the instant their number was called.

Peace Additional elements were included in the Peace children’s version of ‘Dog and Bone’…

1. More than 1 number could be called in the same round


1. In each round, the number of sticks placed in the middle was dependent on how many numerals were

called.

For example: if 2 numbers were called, only 2 sticks will be up for grabs.

This is because…

2. The two teams will compete to compete their hula hoop (which requires 8 sticks) using the accumulated

sticks that they have taken in each round.

In just ONE game, apart from developing their spatial awareness, improving their reaction time and increasing

their focus, children also learn to build teamwork with one another!
