Gardening May by Pippa Greenwood

W elcome to May, one of the fastest moving months in the gardening year. May is the

month when plants just keep on and on growing and developing. New transplants, recently allowed to enjoy the ‘great outdoors’ after an early start in a greenhouse, wait a week or two and then POW! they’re off, and showing you their potential. Old established garden friends, their roots well down in the soil, put on new leaves, stem growth, flower buds maybe even flowers and enjoy the fact that whilst the weather has warmed up, they’ve not yet been hit by growth -restricting drier conditions of summer. It’s a month when it is hard not to feel a regular desire to grab a trowel (or perhaps a fork, spade or cultivator) and get out there and enjoy yourself while at the same time giving the garden and its plants the TLC that’s deserved. What better way to spend an hour or two…. or perhaps even a day or two?

With the massive surge of interest in growing your own vegetables, vegetable plants and seeds are available just about everywhere, so there are no excuses for not giving it a go. Even if time is short or space at a premium, it really is worth growing a few crops – the feeling of self-satisfaction when you make that first harvest is just SO GOOD.... not to mention the taste of the crops themselves. At this time of year you can sow seeds of many vegetables direct into the soil or large pots of multi-purpose compost. Try your hand at climbing French beans, dwarf French beans, runner beans, carrots, salad leaves, spinach or peas. I also adore home grown sweetcorn; this too can be sown direct now, but make sure you sow the seed in a square e.g. four rows of four seeds, formed in to a square (it is a wind pollinated crop and this is the way to get good, well-filled

cobs). It is a bit late to raise your own courgettes, squash, tomatoes or peppers from seed, but there should be plenty of young plants available in local nurseries or garden centres – just make sure you buy a variety of tomato or pepper suitable for growing outdoors if you don’t have a greenhouse (the label should make this clear).

It is worth spending a few minutes to check flower beds and borders, however small or large, as at this time of year they are a hive of activity. I just have masses of twiggy pea-sticks (well branched prunings will do) and have driven them in around the edges of several herbaceous perennials. So many of these lovely plants are inclined to flop disastrously later in the year, but supported subtly now, they’ll remain upright. As I do this I always spot a few other things that need seeing to as well. All the lovely lush growth means that (in my garden at least) slugs and snails are having a fantastic time devastating the tender new leaves. When I put new plants in the ground I scatter oyster shell around the soil beneath the plants. It is readily available from local suppliers of chicken feed, and is by far the best barrier to slugs and snails that I know.... and bought in this way, it does not cost a fortune either. Early

Page 7: The Veiwer Peterborough May 2011

7 Please mention The Viewer when responding to adverts

aphid (greenfly and blackfly) infestations are also likely to be building up now, and dealt with promptly they are unlikely to cause too much damage – a gentle but firm squash between finger and thumb works a treat, or for those less partial to direct action like this, spray with a fatty-acid or soap-based spray late in the day when bees are no longer about.

With most of the gardening year ahead feeding makes sense too. So whether you have a well-stocked compost heap, or prefer to use fertilisers from the garden centre, apply them now so that your flowers, fruits and veg have a chance to make best use of them.

Golden Rules: • Make sure that seedlings and young plants get enough natural light.

• Gradually harden off young plants before planting them out.

• In warmer areas, start to plant out more tender crops, but protect with cloches at first.

• Tomatoes in containers need regular feeding with a liquid tomato food.

• Treat yourself to some summer bedding for a really lively terrace-container, but check the forecast carefully before planting them out.

Pupils develop environment

projects for Eco Awards

P upils from around 30 primary and

secondary schools in Peterborough

are busy developing projects dem-

onstrating their commitment to preserving a

healthy environment. Their projects will be

judged and the best chosen for Peterbor-

ough Eco Awards at a celebration event at

Hampton College, Hampton, Peterbor-

ough, on Tuesday 5 July 2011.

The awards – supported by world-leading

diesel engine manufacturer Perkins and

the Caterpillar Foundation – are organised

by green charity Peterborough Environ-

ment City Trust (PECT) to help young peo-

ple understand and respond to the environ-

mental issues facing the world.

Green Teams from each school have been

working with fellow pupils over the year on

a range of environment-related projects,

such as energy reduction, encouraging bio-

diversity, developing gardens and growing

spaces and promoting healthy snacks in

tuck shops.

“So while pupils are improving their life

prospects the schools benefit from reduced

overhead costs and better pupil commit-

ment.”

Nearly half of all Peterborough schools are

already participating in the Peterborough

Eco Awards programme, which contributes

towards the city’s growing reputation as the

Home of Environment Capital. It also links

in with an international Eco-Schools

scheme, which is administered in England

by the Keep Britain Tidy group.

Brighten up your Skin At last! The weather has warmed up and we can shed our winter layers and expose our bodies to the fresh air. Only, all these winter months with no natural light and under layers of clothes may have left your skin looking dull and dry. This needs more than a quick rub of body lotion.

First of all, you do need to exfoliate. Your body sheds skin cells all the time, but without some friction to remove them, many dead cells will just cling to the surface. Body scrubs are aplenty in your nearest chemist or supermarket, along with body brushes. Allow yourself a good 10 to 15 minutes in the shower or for even better results book yourself in with your beautician.

On the subject of beauticians, as you move down your body it definitely becomes easier and more efficient to ask someone else to help with the

skin maintenance. You can shave the hair off your legs, but it’ll be much smoother – and last longer – if you wax, particu-larly if someone else is doing it for you and has a better view of what needs do-ing. Likewise with your feet; unless you are a contortionist, a home pedicure is always going to be a tedious and back-aching job.

Having prepared the surface, a good mois-

turiser will not only make your skin glow,

but will immediately make you feel more

summery. If you are naturally very pale,

buy a body lotion that also offers a light self-

tanning ingredient.

1. Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water.

2. Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts.

3. Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts.

4. Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the

cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.

Humour Don’t you know who I am

by Chris Russell

‘I f you are in a band, were once in a band, or are in any way into bands, the chances are you’ve seen the excellent

Rob Reiner mockumentary,‘This Is Spinal Tap’. For those who haven’t had the pleasure, the film charts the highs and lows (but mainly lows) of a long-haired, leather-trousered rock band whose star is rather tragically fading. Musicians love Spinal Tap. It is our Bible. And we see that it is good.

The sentence ‘How Spinal Tap is this?’ would be printed on page one of The Inter-national Touring Rock Band Phrasebook, if such a thing were ever written. Finding one-self hopelessly caught up in the midst of a Spinal Tap Moment (let’s coin the abbrevia-tion ‘STM’ for convenience) is pretty much an occupational hazard for our species. Basi-cally, if it causes acute embarrassment, ex-poses the fundamental absurdity of trying to act like a rockstar - or otherwise just makes you look like a twit - it’s an STM.

One of my favourite Lightyears STMs oc-curred shortly before a gig we played at Wembley Stadium in Spring 2010. I had been asked by the production team what size stage we required and had responded with a lovingly-constructed diagram featuring meticulous footnotes and little pictures of all the band members. When we arrived on the pitch for our soundcheck, however, we were directed towards a tiny white podium roughly the size and shape of an upturned bath-tub. Turns out that the headline act, Right Said Fred (I know, you couldn’t make it up), had demanded a stage of those pre-cise dimensions and there was basically nothing we could do about it. Never mind that there’s only two of them (and four of us) and they were using just one guitar (whilst we had a drum-kit and a piano, amongst other things). It is at times like these that the excla-mation ‘Don’t you know who I am?!’ rises like a terrible bile in your throat. And when that happens, you know you’re having an STM.

Last year, whilst on tour in South Africa, we turned up in Cape Town and checked into the city’s finest hotel, The Table Bay. As we were waiting for our rooms to be pre-pared it was brought to our attention that,

following our debut visit to the city the year before, the Table Bay had erected a ‘Lightyears stayed here’ plaque in our hon-our and positioned it on the Golden Seal statue in the hotel grounds. My oh my, did we milk that baby dry. We sauntered around the city with massive, smug grins all over our newly-tanned faces, telling any-body who would listen that our name was emblazoned across Cape Town’s famous Golden Seal just a few small inches away from such luminaries as Michael Jackson, Barack Obama and the England football team. But hubris is a cruel mistress and, of course, we turned up the following year to discover that we now ‘weren’t famous enough’ to stay at the Table Bay and, whilst our name remained on the statue, the hotel manager had been ‘unable to accommo-date us at the current time’. What a kick in the teeth! Don’t they know who I am?!

So please, if you ever see a lone musician in your local pub nursing a pint and looking sorry for himself, give him a biscuit and tell him he has nice hair. He’s probably just ex-hausted from years of trying to maintain the charade that he is a maverick trendsetter who lives every single day on the edge of existence.

And take it from me, that’s extremely hard work indeed.

Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents, worked with Sting’s producer and starred in a T-Mobile advert. Chris is currently working on his first novel, “Mockstars”. Read more of Chris’ blogs and tour diaries at www.TheLightyears.com.

Motor Review:

Most Profitable Cars

C ar companies turn over billions of pounds every year and bank millions in profits – but which cars are the

most profitable? It’s a question we’ve been pondering for

some time. All car manufacturers can flog a car, but what makes the difference between a bumper profit margin and a tiny one?

Well, we asked a host of industry experts, professors and insiders to help us come up with this list.

They told us cutting costs and maximising returns in the automotive world is all about sharing expertise and platforms – do that and car manufacturers can dramatically increase their profits. Here are some of the cars that our experts believe are real cash cows for their makers.

BMW 3-Series It’s the salesman’s mile-muncher, but its premium price and relatively cheap production costs mark the 3-Series out as a winner for the marque. Our experts said it was mostly down to excellent cost control, the fact cars are often highly specified and usually sold for a premium over similar-sized cars like the Ford Mondeo.

McLaren MP4-12C One of the shock cars to emerge from our research was the new McLaren. Although development costs are high, the actual car is relatively inexpensive to make in relation to the high retail price. Our experts said the carbon chassis could be the cheapest to produce ever while many physical components have been replaced by more cost-effective electronics. If they sell the numbers forecast at between £160-170k it could be one of the most profitable cars ever!

Range Rover Sport The Range Rover Sport benefits from all factors that make a model profitable: It’s based on an existing chassis (Defender)

which keeps build costs low. It’s sold for a premium with lots of added extras. And it’s been kept on sale for a long period of time without a major redesign. All these add up to a holy grail in terms of profitability.

VW Golf Described by our experts as ‘the daddy’ of platform sharing, VW isn’t one of the most profitable makers without good reason! The Golf is responsible for two million units a year and currently provides underpinnings for a huge array of Seat, Audi, Skoda and other VW models. Many are sold for a premium but cost no more to make, adding a healthy balance to VW’s bottom line every year.

Aston Martin Cygnet Ok, we know this hasn’t arrived yet, but the baby Aston has the potential to be a real profit centre for the maker. Essentially rebadging a Toyota iQ and charging £30k-plus for it – and that’s before buyers have shelled out on extras – could spell happy times for the marque. However, despite its potential, our experts warned this would only be possible if buyers like it…

Ford Transit It’s not just cars that add substantially to a manufacturer’s bottom lines – vans do too! The Ford Transit is sold in markets around the world and our experts believe it is one of the most profitable vehicles on sale in Europe. Low production costs and decent volumes help keep the cash flowing for the Blue Oval.

Avoiding Phone Call Computer Scams

There have been a number of profes-sional scammers that have been tar-geting computer users in the UK. You may receive a phone call from a com-pany claiming to be or claiming to be working on behalf of a well known computer company.

The conversation may go something like this; The caller will claim that your computer is going slow or is infected with a virus. They will then go on to give you some instructions to follow on your computer that will make it appear your computer is infected. Of course it is not.

You may then be passed to a technical support person who will then purport to fix your PC by giving you instructions that will allow them to remotely access

your computer.

They will claim to have fixed your com-puter and at this point ask for your credit card details for you to pay for the service they have just provided.

Under no circumstances should you give them any information about your-self and especially do not hand over your credit card details. This is one of many similar frauds committed over the phone. Never give out any details to anyone who calls you directly no mat-ter what company they claim to be from. They may be trying to get infor-mation from you in order to commit identity theft.

and business computer training.

Monthly Tips for your Pet Insights into Rabbit

Behaviour

A mazing rabbits still have most of their natural instincts, making it really im-portant that we understand and

consider their natural habitat and behaviour so we can make sure that they’re as happy as they would be in the wild.

It’s a common misconception that rabbits are very easy to look after and all they need to do is to be popped into a hutch, then feed and clean them when needed. Nowa-days, we have a far greater understanding of rabbits and there are a few things we need to recognise in order to keep them happy and rabbits expressing aggressive behaviour toward you and/or other pets, often indicates they are in distress and suffer-ing emotionally.

How to Keep Your Rabbit Stimulated

In the wild, rabbits have plenty to keep them occupied, from foraging to reproduction to territorial defence. Captive rabbits, on the other hand, often lack stimulation, which can lead to behavioural problems and poor health. Much like humans, they need to be kept physically and mentally active. You can replicate a rabbit’s natural environment by providing some of the below:

- Tunnels - Twigs (which can be hung in their runs) & other suitable toys - Planter filled with potting compost for dig-ging - Large tubes and platforms for climbing - Places to hide such as cardboard boxes - Games, such as food items in brown paper, which they have to unwrap

Digging is an innate and favourite pastime of rabbits, both domestic and wild. By pro-viding digging substitutes, such as a sand or earth pit, your pet rabbits will be able to dig away without damaging your garden or escaping.

Being active also reduces the risk of rabbits

becoming overweight and even obese, as well as providing the physical and mental stimulation they need.

Keeping within Your Rabbits Comfort Zone

Just like humans, rabbits become bored if their environments remain the same, so con-sider an occasional change of scenery. However, be careful as too much change can have adverse effects. A wild rabbit’s survival depends on an intimate knowledge of its surroundings in order to escape from predators, so structural changes to a pet rabbit’s “warren” should be kept subtle, such as changing their toys and regularly provid-ing new ones.

It’s incredibly beneficial for rabbits to start interacting with people, other rabbits and also other pets such as cats and dogs from an early age so they become part of every-day life and not stressful encounters. Famili-arity with other species will help them de-velop into friendly and confident adults. Exposing them to normal everyday sights and sounds is also important, so they remain relaxed and happy in their environments as they mature.

As always we hope readers find this article helpful and interesting and should you have any questions or concerns about your pet please contact your Vets for assistance.

The Birdies in my GardenThe Birdies in my GardenThe Birdies in my GardenThe Birdies in my Garden

In my garden, I hear birdies, they’re all singing in the trees,

Jumping from the branches, feathers ruffling in the breeze,

I always fill their bird bath, but to make their life complete,

I nipped off to the shops today and bought them birdie treats.

A luxury pack of bird seed and some little suet balls,

A bird feeder to feed from – yes, my birdies had it all,

I made a cup of tea; I sat and watched them with a smile,

They loved their little treats; I must have sat there for a while,

Contented, I went back indoors; I needed to do more,

A little bit of polishing; perhaps mop the kitchen floor,

Then I noticed it was getting late, and really it was time,

That I brought my nice white washing in, still out there on the line,

I ventured back outside again and off the birdies flew,

Full of seeds and little nuts and feeling good as new,

It was clear to see they’d loved my gifts, it really wasn’t hard

‘Cos across my nice white washing they’d all left their calling card..... ©Jan Jack’s Perfect Verse 2011

F ramed by the Taurus mountains to the south, the high plateau of

Cappadocia lies in central Turkey, a land bristling with volcanic features, known as ‘fairy chimneys’, and carved with ancient underground cities and rock churches.

For early Christians and others who farmed the surrounding land, living underground was safe, cool in summer, warm in winter and whenever you needed extra space, you could just dig another room in the relatively soft stone. Stables were near the top, accessed down a ramp, while further down was a network of communal kitchens, sleeping quarters, stores, niches for oil lamps, wine cellars and chapels. The cities ran seven floors deep, often more, with air shafts, wells and millstones (complete with peepholes) which could block the tunnels in time of danger.

Many such cities remain undiscovered but 36 have been identified, a few partially opened to visitors who file through narrow passageways, stooping right down at times with the occasional moment of panic but rarely a chance to turn back. The largest city is Kaymakli, the deepest Derinkuyu. Both are on the tourist trail.

Meanwhile above ground, nature has shaped the most fantastic fairyland, eroding the soft tufa layer left by eruptions to uncover tall columns of hard rock marching through the countryside like a giant army. Some, capped with basalt, look like overgrown mushrooms, others come to a point like pixies’ hats, many are pierced with the dark holes of troglodyte dwellings. Large or small, these so-called fairy chimneys come in twos or threes, or family-sized groups, while here and there sculpted ridges cling to curving slopes the colour of cappuccino.

At over 1000 metres, the little town of

Ürgüp is a convenient place to stay, with its share of fairy chimneys, its rock-hewn houses turned into cave hotels and on the doorstep, a whole flotilla of hot air balloons offering the ride of a lifetime. Every morning, they rise above Red Valley, packed with wide-eyed tourists, gliding high above it all or dipping down for a close-up view. Back on land, the astonishing moonscape stretches as far as you can see, Pigeon Valley, Hunters Valley, Uchisar, and when you reach the best viewpoints, cameras clicking all around, you almost forget to browse

the souvenir stalls brimming with pottery, turquoise and pashmina.

But there is more to this land than caves and fairy chimneys. Not so far away among the vineyards, the Göreme Open Air Museum preserves some of Cappadocia’s finest rock-cut monasteries and churches, dating back to the early days of Christianity. Footpaths and steps lead you from one chapel to the next where wall paintings and frescoes in earthy tones depict scenes from the New Testament, or St Theodore and St George slaying the dragon. Most decorations are from the 11th to 13th centuries but there are earlier examples.

Carved into rock or cliff, every chapel has a story to tell. Sandals is named after mysterious footprints, the Dark Church was a pigeon house, and you find a Snake Church, home of the dragon, an Apple Church, once near an orchard, Santa Barbara, where red lines were drawn on the vault to imitate brick, and the beautifully restored Tokali, with gleaming lapis lazuli in its newer section. At the entrance to the complex, the Nunnery rises on several floors, church and cells cut into the towering rock and just like in the underground cities, connected by tunnels with millstone doors. Cappadocia is indeed like nowhere else in Turkey, equally stunning above and underground..

Late Onset (or Type 2) diabetes is a serious but controllable disease. There is a strong genetic link and any individual having a parent with the condition is at risk, significantly more so if both parents are sufferers. However, other factors will elevate this risk and even cause diabetes without the genetic factor.

Of particular note is that of obesity, with around 55% of patients being obese when diagnosed. A sedentary lifestyle, a poor diet and high blood pressure can increase the likelihood of becoming diabetic.

The symptoms are common to both early and late onset diabetes but typically appear much more slowly with type 2. Classic symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue and weight loss.

Prevention is, of course, better than cure and if you know that several of the risk factors

apply to you, action sooner rather than later can make a difference. Unfortunately ageing is an additional cause so the longer you leave it the greater the possibility of developing a problem later on.

However if you do develop diabetes, good management of the condition is critical to your longevity and quality of life. Without management the condition can have serious health consequences including heart disease, kidney failure, blindness and a stroke.

Management, particularly in the early stages, is by eating a healthy diet, increasing exercise and monitoring your blood glucose level. It is only if the condition worsens that you will need to take insulin usually in tablet form.

East of England Show

The rural life spectacular

returns for 2011

T he region’s leading countryside and life-style show - The East of England Show – is returning to the East of England Show-

ground in Peterborough on 17th, 18th and 19th June 2011.

This Show will be a celebration of British farming and rural life. The livestock classes will be building on last year’s success and hoping for even higher levels of entries this year. The Show always attracts some of the country’s finest livestock and the standard just seems to improve every year. This year’s beef cattle classes will be hosting both the Long-horn National Show and the Beef Shorthorn National Show. Sheep classes will include Blue Texel Sheep for the first time.

The very finest horses will be competing in the equestrian classes, including in-hand rid-den and scurry classes, and all breeds will be present, from Shetlands to Shires. Show jump-ing will also feature, and the huge range of classes will see some of today’s best riders competing for glory.

Food remains at the heart of the Show and children will be able to come along and cook a delicious, juicy fruit crumble, and along the way find out how their food gets from the farm to their plate. On Friday the finalists in the School Food Challenge will be battling it out for this prestigious trophy.

There will be musical entertainment throughout the three days, plus plenty of ac-

tivities for children and adults alike to take part in.

A fabulous display of vintage tractors, and farm machinery under the theme of Sugar Beet will stir up the nostalgia among visitors, as will the steam and classic car displays. The Country Sports Arena will once again have a wide range of displays and demonstrations of all aspects of rural life.

The Peterborough International Orchid Show will be returning for the fourth year, and will delight visitors with spectacular blooms from all of the UK and the World.

Chief Executive of the East of England Agricultural Society, Paul Wallwork, said: ‘This year’s Show will continue to entertain and inform people about farming, food and all things rural. It is also a fabulous day out for the whole family, with something of interest for all ages. We hope you will join us for what is promising to be a wonderful weekend.’

I sn’t May wonderful? Not just one bank holiday, but two! Yes, two opportunities to sit for hours on the A303 on the way to the

West Country, with heavy skirmishing breaking out on the back seat, Radio Two’s travel news telling you every half an hour that the A303 isn’t moving, and your dreams of arriving at the holiday cottage in time to unpack and eat a leisurely dinner, before strolling down the village pub to start the weekend in earnest beginning to look less and less likely.

But why two such un-missable opportunities for traffic jams in the same month?

Well, 1st May has been a holiday since time out of mind. Known to pagans ancient and modern as Beltane, it’s one of the few ancient festivities that can be accurately tracked down: add a few apparently supernumerary letters and it’s the Irish Gaelic for May (the month). And various manifestations of “maying” – maypoles, May garlands, May queens, May fairs, bringing in the May – have been well-documented in England since medieval times.

Robin Hood plays were traditional in some districts, complete with Merrie Men, Maid Marian, a hobby-horse, bowers decked with fresh greenery and wildflowers, dancing, drinking, and, as the day wore on, the inevitable outbreaks of immorality. Outlaw-related behaviour was not confined to the peasantry, either: on one occasion Henry VIII and a group of courtiers, all dressed as the greenwood gangsters, burst in on Queen Katherine of Aragon and were generally rowdy in a Bullingdon Club sort of way. The tables were turned on another May Day when Henry himself, out a-maying on Shooter’s Hill, was similarly accosted by men clad all in Lincoln green and, in a mock kidnap, escorted to a rather luxurious Robin Hood’s bower for much feasting and a (doubtless somewhat erratic) archery display.

Spring Bank Holiday, by contrast, is an almost entirely modern invention in that it was introduced only in 1971 to replace Whitsun Weekend. Whitsun, of course, falls seven weeks after Easter and was therefore

a hugely movable feast, migrating from late May to mid-June. This was much to the annoyance of tidy-minded people who liked things regular. So they changed it, and thereby killed off a centuries-old Christian feast-day. How this increases the happiness of the nation is anybody’s guess.

But why should May be the focus of all this feasting and merrymaking and not, say, July, when the weather is more likely to be suited to the purpose? The answer, as some old TV gardening expert used to say – was it Percy Thrower? – lies in the soil.

To agrarian peasants down the millennia, May has always been a month of comparative idleness. The heavy ploughing had been – or should have been – completed in April. Haymaking wouldn’t start until June. The biggest job for May was breaking last year’s fallow land and preparing it for more serious ploughing later on in the year. Other than that the work was mainly maintenance, especially hedging and ditching; it was also when the cattle were turned out after winter, so milking, churning butter, and cheese making all started up for the duration of summer.

This, to us modern-day softies, might sound like back-breaking labour; but it was the true horny-handed son of the soil’s idea of nothing to do. So what better time for tippling, wenching, carousing and generally making merrie? Beats stationary Saturday on the A303, that’s for sure...

For May 2011- By Astrologer Christine Chalklin

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21

After the 15th the Sun is joined by three other planets in your sign – Mars, Venus and Mercury are now in full force. The focus is on you as you

question old belief patterns while expanding horizons and learning new things. Your cosmic gifts of practical creativity come to the forefront.

Gemini MAY 22 - June 21

May suggests that sweeping change is imminent as a ‘new you’ comes into focus. So many planets occupy the deeply introspective part of your

chart that you question the use of your poten-tial. Seize your chances and use your intellec-tual and communicative talents in new ways.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22

May holds the greatest potential for expanding your social networks into areas where you can flourish. The full moon on the 17th challenges you to

take up creative projects and make fresh starts. Feelings of doubt and inadequacy can be put to one side as you develop and grow.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23

May draws your attention to your goals and ambitions. With so many planets occupying the highest point of your chart, you are ready to ex-

plore all angles and possibilities. Follow your enthusiasm and curiosity and you’ll find doors are suddenly opening for you.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 22

May brings many unanswered ques-tions and the chance for a total re-orientation. You’ll be asking ‘where am I going and where do I feel se-

curely rooted?’ Don’t be in too much of a rush to sort things out; the full moon on the 17th brings opportunities and offers you hadn’t thought of.

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23

The maverick planet Uranus, in your opposite sign for the next 7 years, brings uncertainty and challenges to your normally balanced way of life.

Don’t be afraid to explore the alternative world views presented by those around you. You are entering a new chapter of your life.

SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22

Relationships hit the spotlight during May, the Taurus new moon on the 3rd triggers a deep need for an in-depth review and your urgent sense

of purpose and direction has you questioning many things. Wonderful opportunities for growth and development are available to you this month.

SAGITTARIUS NOV. 23 - DEC. 21

May puts the emphasis on your work and your career. Action packed April brought many changes to your life and now you are ready to put

them in to place. Your generosity of sprit has much to offer and you should feel more confi-dent and powerful than ever before.

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20

Love and creativity feature strongly during May and you are being asked to question your purpose and your values. The 21st brings a positive as-

pect between transformational Pluto in your sign, and productive Mars in Taurus. This is the chance that you have been waiting for!

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18

May continues to be action packed for Aquarians. Communication is em-phasised and involvements with new networks and new study programmes

will fire your enthusiasm and your interest. Re-main open to all possibilities and utilise your talents to the full.

PISCES FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20

May asks Pisceans to be open and alert to all possibilities. Monetary ac-tivities are volatile until mid month when Mercury and Venus join Mars in

the financial sign of Taurus. You are more at-tuned to who you are and where you are go-ing and exciting opportunities begin to appear.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20

After the 10th, energetic Mars moves to the financial sector of your chart and heralds the need for a review. You can now put your excess en-

ergy into productive activities and money making schemes. Stern Saturn in your opposite sign of Libra keeps you in touch with reality.
