2Chapter 1

The big changeI can't believe this is actually happening. It feel's likeyesterday was summer break, and now its over. I don·teven remember what·s happened these last fewmonth's. It doesn't matter now, today's the first dayback at school. I wonder what I·m going to weartoday? I thought to myself. Same as usual I suppose.Blue jeans, a light blue shirt, and, of course, my vans(these are the number one type of shoes I love towear). I always thought that having my brown hair and

blue eyes would make me feel... different. All I feelnow, standing in my bedroom, wearing these clothes,looking in the mirror and seeing myself all dressed up,is no different then looking at myself with pj's on. Forsome reason I kind of do feel different. I don·t know if



it·s a good thing or a bad thing, but I bet it·s a little bitof both.My bedroom is the strangest shade of blue, but stillalso pretty. My Aunt Violet helped me paint it when Iwas about fourteen. So my bedroom has been this wayfor three years now. As I walked over to the couch inthe corner of the room, I suddenly remembered3something. My birthday's in exactly three days. Iwasn't even thinking about it until now. I'll finally beeighteen. I wonder what I·m going to do this year? I

seriously don't feel like having a big party these days. Iknow its been almost six years but I still can't get overit. Every night I dream that it's not true, and that I wasdreaming that my parents didn't really get smashed bythat car while walking home. But every time I wake up,I remind my self that it really did happen.While I was driving to school, I kept having this feelingthat today would be a better day. I really hope it willbe, because I don't know what I can do if the first thingI hear when I get to school is "how are you?" or " don'tbe sad, I·m here" I wouldn't be able to stand it if theydid... let's hope that doesn't happen. Wow. I just pulledinto the school parking lot, driving my blue jeepwrangler, and say the best looking car in the world! Ididn't even know these kind of cars exist! I think it's a

Lamborghini Murcielago! But it's black and blue andextremely good looking! I wonder who owns it?!When I finally found a good parking place I got out,locked my doors, and the first person I say was...4



"Belinda!" Clarissa yelled. Here starts the new year."Hey Clarissa, how was your summer?" I asked her."Oh forget that right now Belinda! have you seen thenew student this year?"I've never seen her so excited"No, why?" I asked"Because he's absolutely gorgeous, that's why!"She pretty much just yelled in my hear but I wonderwhat he looks like..."Ok Clarissa, fill me in. What's he look like?"I'd better get the details now.

"For starters he's absolutely beautiful! He has darkbrown hair and he's at least five foot six or five footseven. He also has the most gorgeous eyes. It's has ifhe were a god! That's how hot he is! He came overhere from some place called Sicily, Italy. Oh! guesswhat else?"This was never going to stop, i thought"What else Clarissa?" uh-oh"His birthday is the same day as yours! Septembersixteenth!"wow how did she get all this information?"That's pretty cool Clarissa, but I think we'd better getgoing to class before were late. By the5way, does this dude have a name?" I asked.

I have to know now because she got all of this stuck inmy head. "Oh yeah! His name is Damon Fiorentino "If she smiles any bigger her face is going to be stucklike that. Because of that last thought, I startedlaughing in the hall way for no reason at all, and



Clarissa looked at me like i was insane. Who knows?she might be right.On my way to class, I say this boy named Damon andwow, she was right, he was amazingly beautiful. Butthat's not why I was late for class. I wasn·t watchingwere I was going and I bumped into him on accident,and he helped me get my books from off floor. Whenwe both looked up at each other I thought that today,and every other day this year, was going to be perfectas long as I had a class with him so I had to ask him." Y our name's Damon right?"

I had to check what time it was. Wow! My cell phonesaid it was already nine. I·m fifteen minutes late toclass! Why isn't he flipping out about this like I am?"We'll I·d better go. I'm late for class. so i'll see youlater Damon," and that was when i turned around andstarted walking to class but then I wondered would hegive me his number? So I turned around, and not evena full second had passed, and he was already gone.How did he leave that fast?I'd better think this through... He looks like a god, he·snice enough to talk to, and when you turn

18Chapter 2First sign of H opeThe rest of the day zoomed by faster then I would havethought possible. Maybe because I wanted to go on adate with Damon tonight, or just because I wanted toget away from school, either way I really wanted to gethome and just rest for a few minutes. When the bellfinally rang, I packed my stuff, and started to leave the



room. When I got out of the class room, I froze. Damonwas standing there, staring straight at me.Why is he standing there? I hope it·s something good«´Hello Belinda.µ Damon said.´Heyµ I said.´ I was wondering if you wanted my phone number, Ithought you might.µ He said the last part because Ishook my head up and down.´Here call me anytime you want, alright?µ he said.ókay, I willµ I couldn·t help but smile and he smiledback and his smile was so amazingly beautiful.

20Chapter 3An Unwelcome VisitorTonight is going to feel so strange. I haven·t been on adate in forever. I really like Damon but I don·t know

why. Is it his gorgeous brown eyes? Or his beautifulsmile? Or just him? I don·t care, I just have thesemixed feelings about him. I haven·t ever had feelingslike this before. It feels amazing. It feels like if heturned me down, I would break into a million pieces.Early this morning I keep wondering why it took him solong to answer my question about going to the movies.Was he nervous or something? It didn·t seem like it.He doesn·t seem like the nervous type. I wonder whattime it is? Holy crap! It·s already 7:20! I guess all I cando to my hair is leave it down. I turned my head back to the movie also,and was devastated.The movie finally ended and I started to get up. I guessI was a little dizzy from sitting to long, so when I tried

to get up, I almost fell forward. He caught me fromfalling, held my hand and asked ´ are you okay?µýeah, sorry, I guess my feet went to sleep for aminuteµ´well, I was wondering, are you hungry?µ



When he said that, my stomach growled. I didn·t evenknow I was hungry.ýeah, I guess I amµókay, lets goµ.The rest of the night he never let go of my hand, and Ifelt like the happiest person alive.When we got in his car he keep asking me question24after question. What I liked about the town, what Iwanted to be when I got older, he even asked me howmany boys I had dated! I couldn·t believe why he

When the man left Damon relaxed alittle and we walked over to a table. We sat there insilence for about five minutes until the waiter cameover, asked us what we wanted to drink, gave us a

He sattheir in his seat the whole time watching me withoutsaying a word. I started to get self-conscious aboutthis, but good thing I was finally done. When he sawthat I was finished he asked ´ are you ready to leavenow?µ´ yeahµ was all I could think of at the time.Without a check or anything he laid down fifty dollarsand we left.Where does he get all of this money? I mean if I had

27all that money I don·t know what I would do with it.I didn·t know how cold I was until we got in his car andI shivered. I asked him if we could turn on the heaterand he said of course.



I wanted so badly to ask why he was being so quiet butwhen I stop fighting with myself, I chickened out.Before I knew it, I was back home, and he was walkingme to the door. I knew he wanted to leave, so I have toask him now.´ why are you so quiet Damon? I mean ever since wegot to the restaurant you haven·t said hardly anything.Did I do something wrong?µI couldn·t even think of anything I had to even if I diddo something wrong.´ No, of course not Belinda. There·s just something I

Before I could even turn toopen the door, I heard footsteps coming up behind me.When I turned to see who it was, I was shocked. It wasa guy with dark brown hair, blue eyes, wearing darkblue jeans, a blue t-shirt, a leather jacket, and bluevans. He looked like he was ready for something tohappen, or for me to say something.´ um, hi, who are you?µ´ I·m Erik.µ

I just need to calm down and sleep.When I got the clothes I wanted to wear to bed, I wentto the bathroom to take a shower, put my clothes onand came back to my bedroom. Right when I walkedinto my room, I froze. The first thing I looked at was mybed, then my window. There was a note on my bed andmy window was wide open. I hurried to shut my doorand lock it, then went to the window to shut and lock

that too. I walked back over to my bed, picked up thenote, then sat down.I had know idea who wrote the note, and I was startingto get scared. Why am I afraid of a note? P lease tell me he is lying about that last part. All of asudden I hear a tapping on my window, and when Iturn my head, I see him sitting on the tree rightoutside my window, smiling at me. That wasn·t whatmade me freeze, to where I couldn·t get up and closemy curtain. There was blood on his lips!Right then my phone rang and I almost screamed.When I looked to see who called, and looked back up,he was gone. I picked up my phone and answered it.´hello, Clarissaµ´hey girlie. So are you going to tell me all of the juicy

stuff now or in a few minutes?µ´how about tomorrow before school starts?µónly if you promise to tell me EVER Y THINGµ´how about I tell you most of it?µ´ okay fine whatever. close. I look out, I don·t see him, so I open the windowa little and the wind feels good. I think now I can go tobed easier. I lay down, close my eyes, and sleep.It feels like moments later that I wake up, and I seehim over my bed. He bends down, grabs my head, and



does something to the back of my ear. When he·sdone, he gets off of my bed, and jumps out of thewindow. I run to the window after him then shut andlock the window. When I touch the back of my ear, it·sbleeding. I go to the bathroom, get a tissue, and cleanit up. I go back to bed, thinking about all the stuff hetold me. I don·t understand what world he·s talkingabout and I already don·t want to join it.After thinking about this, I fall asleep, and that·s whenI start having nightmares about Erik«I·m walking to school when I hear a noisecoming from the bushes. I don·t reallyregister the noise until it·s to late. I keepwalking a few feet then have to stop becausethere·s a hand over my mouth. I look around,and I see him with blood at the mouth andthen the worst comes.´ Your mine, and nobody else·s. I·ll be

watching you. Don·t forget that.µ Then hebites my neck.I wake up screaming, get out of my bed, and checkmyself in the mirror. All I see is a hand mark aroundmy neck. I so can·t believe this is all happening threedays from my birthday. This is one present I reallydon·t want.

Chapter 4



A secret revealedThe next day that I woke up, I was confused.Everything from last night came rushing back to me.

The date with Damon, the awful visit from Erik, andthat strange dream. I feel like yesterday was just ajoke, until I remembered Clarissa, and knew it wasn·t.Damon seemed hesitant when I asked if somethingwas wrong. Erik is a different story altogether. Helooked like one of those people that if he wantedsomething, he would get it. That part scares me. A lot.Every five minutes or so, I keep looking out the windowexpecting to see Erik hanging right outside. I still don·tunderstand why I·m scared. Maybe it·s because healmost choked me, or how he threatened me. Which Istill don·t understand what he meant. I mean, why didhe keep repeating most things? Y ou·ll join me, you·remine, I·ll be watching you, don·t forget that. Was allthis supposed to be a threat? Or a promise?

I decide to put anything about Erik behind me untilafter school is over. I go to my dresser, pick the firstthing I lay my hands on, and get dressed. I go to mybathroom, and look at my self in the mirror.I guess it was a good thing that I grabbed a turtleneck, because right on my neck, Erik·s hand mark wasstill their. Stop thinking about him. He doesn·t matterany more. Remember that and only that.I go down stairs after staring at my neck for tenminutes, and run into Drake in the kitchen.´watch where you·re going idiotµ he grumbled.´you watch where I·m going, stupid,µ I spit back in hisface.



´when are you going to get better come backs?µíf you would just stop messing with me I wouldn·thave to make anyµýeah, well, good luck with that.µWith that last remark, he left the room.Why is he so annoying? I start to get my cereal when asoft tap on the back door, makes me stop. I walk overto the door, and wish I hadn·t. It was Erik. I mean extreme creepy.´well, of course he can run fast.µ He said to me as if Iwas stupid.´how?µ I said to him stupidly.´ Because Damon and I are different. We·re not fromyour world. The whole ride to school was silent. I really hated Erik,and didn·t want to see his face ever again.´ Come on, Belinda, that·s not nice.µ He said playfully.´ I don·t care if I·m being nice or not. Chapter 6Sibling rivalryDamon told me to drive my jeep home, and not stopanywhere else on the way there. Once I got there, I raninside and locked the door behind me. After fiveminutes of sitting on the couch, a knock on the doorworried me.A voice that I knew and loved was muffled by the door.´ Belinda, its me, open the door.µ

´Damon, I need to know what·s going on. Why did Ihave to leave school for?µHe looked at me with such trust and sadness that I gota little dizzy.´ I wish I could tell you, Belinda, but I can·t. I dreamed that I was gliding through theforest, towards a mysterious thick fog. I kepthearing voices, and my name being whispered

over and over again.´ Belinda.µ« ´ Belinda.µ« ´ Belinda.µEven though I should have been afraid, I keptwalking towards it until I walked through thewall of fog. Then I was afraid. I look up infront of me and saw Erik holding my brotherhigh in one hand, and aunt violet in theother one. They were both alive but barely.Before I could call out to Erik, he snappedboth of their necks in front of me. I stared athim with my mouth wide open in shocked.Erik seemed to sense me there, and lookedup with hunger in his eyes. Then it alldisappeared in a flash. He looked down at mylast living relatives, and back up at me.´ I·m sorry Belindaµ he told me in deepsorrow.When I finally found my voice, I was yellingat him.´ why did you do that? How could you?« IHATE YOU ERIK FIORENTINO! DO YOU HEARME? I HATE YOU!µ

Without saying a word, he ran off into theforest.I woke up suddenly, gasping for air. I looked aroundthe room and saw that my bedroom window was open.



I decided to get out of bed, and go downstairs to seewhere Damon was.I sensed something was wrong the moment I openedmy bedroom door. It was way to quiet in the house.´ Damon?µ I yelled over and over while searching thehouse.´he·s not here right now,µ said a voice behind me.I turned around to see Erik standing by the stairs.´ where·s he at?µ I whispered.´ lets just say he·s following a false trail,µ he saidcheerfully.

´ what did you do?µ I still said in a whisper.´I took you out of your bed while you were sleepingand carried you through the woods. Then I brought youback.µ´ why would you do that?µ´I wanted to get him away for a while so that I could«talk to you.µ´ talk to me about what?µ´ I told you that if you said or thought about me in anyway, I was going to make you mine. Y ou dreamedabout me, while my brother was keeping tabs on yourmind. Now, your time is up.µWhile finishing his last words, I heard a growlingsound coming from his chest.´what are you doing?µ I yelled at him completely

frightened.´ I·m going to show you the real me.µRight when he said his last words, his body startingchanging. He changed into a huge leopard that was asdark as the darkest night. Then it started to speak.



´ if I were you, I would start running, Belinda. I·ll giveyou ten second head start. Better go now. The clocksticking.µWith out thinking about it twice, I ran out the door,and towards the woods. I never stopped running, evenwhen I hear a howl in the distance.With out a warning I was knocked down my a darkfigure. I turned over and saw that it was the blackleopard.´ why are you doing this?µ I whispered to himcompletely frightened.

´ I won·t let you be my brother·s girlfriend. I will turnyou myself, that way you will be mine forever.µ´ I won·t ever be yours, Erik.µ I said more bravely.´ yes, you will.µI was so frightened that I started kicking andscreaming over and over again. While I was doing this,I heard another howl in the night. P lease don·t tell meit·s coming this way.I never stopped trying to get Erik away from me, butevery thing I did was useless. He didn·t even buckleover when I kicked him in the side or punched him inhis nose.´ you might as well stop now, Belinda.µ´ why would I listen to you?µ I spat at him.´ I know all about your --,µ before he could finish what

he was saying, he was knocked off of me by anotherleopard. This one, was solid white.´ well, well, well. If it isn·t my sweet little brother.µ Eriksaid sarcastically.



Before he had started to speak, the leopards face wasfurious. When Erik had finished, the leopards faceshowed so many emotions, it was hard to see all ofthem at once.´ Damon?µ I whispered to him.He looked to scared to answer me out loud, so all hedid was nod his head.´ this is why you should have let me make you one ofus, Belinda!µ Erik yelled at me.´why?µ´ he thinks that if he speaks to you, you won·t want

him any more. Y ou·ll think that he·s a freak.µHis face told me that he wanted me to hate him. Idon·t care want he wants. I still want Damon.´Belinda?µ said a voice behind.I turned around to see that it was Damon.ýes?µÍ·m sorry I didn·t tell you before. This went on for the next ten minutes, withoutstopping.In the distance I started to hear a rumbling sound. Itsounded like hundreds of deer running towards us.What·s going on?

Chapter 7Part of the truth



All at once hundreds of huge dark figures camerunning into our path. It was a herd of deer. They wererunning past me, and straight towards Damon andErik.´ don·t hurt them!µ I begged.They didn·t hear a word I said.P lease, don·t hurt them. I thought in my head.When I finished thinking that, I heard somethingcoming up from behind me. I spun around and saw adeer the size of a horse standing in front of me. Icouldn·t speak a word. I had never ever seen a deer

this close up before.Then, the most shocking thing happened. It spoke.´ would you happen to be Belinda?µ it asked.´yes,µ I whispered to him a little frightened.´ don·t be scared young one. We are here to help.µ hesaid politely.´ who are you?µ´ my name is Julius. I am just like Damon. Except I ammuch, much older then him.µ he explained and jokedat the same time.´ how are you like them? Y ou·re a deer.µ I said to himsheepishly.´ we are both shape shifting vampires. We don·t haveto look alike to be what we are.µ explained evenfurther.

´ you can be what ever you want to be?µ´ yes, my dear.µThis got me thinking. Could I be like them someday?From behind me, I heard another sound. It soundedlike footsteps.



I turned around and saw Damon walking towards me.He looked a little apologetic, but more on the officialside.´ he·s ready to go sir.µS ir? ´ thank you, Damon.µ´ your welcome.µI am sooo confused right now.´ I think Belinda here has earned an explanation, don·tyou?µ he said directly to Damon.He looked at me then said, ´ yes sir.µ

Chapter 8The story unfoldsWe had to walk all the way back to my house, so Icould get my keys from my room. When we got outsideI asked a some what stupid question.´ where do you live?µ´ how about I drive?µ´ sure,µ I agreed.



He walked me to the passenger side, and opened thedoor for me.G od, he·s such a gentleman.Out of know where Damon started to laugh.´ thank you,µ he said to me easily.Then I remembered he could read my mind at will.´ your welcome.µHe drove all of ten minutes. It seemed like a life time.His house was like nothing had ever seen before. Itwas like a dream come true. His house was six milesfrom the main road, Right next to an abandoned

cemetery. His house was a mysterious shape of blue.The porches railings, and the shutters were black. Hishouse looked almost like a hotel. It was ten storieshigh, and looked like fog over most of the house.Like always, curiosity got the better of me.´ this is your house?µ I said incredibly.´ yes. I know it·s big, but I needed the room. I had a lotof stuff to bring with me.µ´ what did you have to bring with you?µ I asked a littleworried.´ come inside and let me show you,µ he told me.We walked into his house, and it seemed even biggerthen the house. couldn·t finish the job, and I told him that it was mybrother. After that, he told me I could only have minorjobs. It stayed that way for the next five hundred andforty-four years. I told Zaric I was ready, and he said itwas just in time. My brother was at it again.µ



´ this time it was different. He was after a twenty-threeyear old women. I guess he didn·t realize that she wasmarried and had a two year old baby girl.µ he pausedto look at me, then continued. ´ the child didn·t knowwhat was going on, but she wasn·t crying like Ithought she would. I went over to the child, and tookher away from all of the ciaos. I took her into theforest, and we played with her dolls. I never thought itwould feel so normal. I went outside and saw yourfootprints in the dirt outside the forest. I ran and saw

you underneath my brother. I couldn·t stand it. Y oulooked so frightened and vulnerable.µHe paused for several second before speaking again.´ now you know what·s been going on. And why I¶vebeen so protective over you.µ
