1886 - 1928 1928 - 1957In the year 1886 Richard Klinger opens up a small workshop in Vienna.

A mere four years later, he invents the reflex level gauge.

In 1893 the plant in Gumpuldskirchen is put into operation.

Creation of the “KLINGERit”, the revolutionary calendered compressed asbestos fibre gasket material.

Karl Klinger takes over the business.

“KLINGERit-1000”, an oil resistant jointing material with wire mesh, is developed for head gaskets in combustion engines.

The connection to the automotive industry opens up a new market segment - the production of brake pads.

1957 - 19841984 - 2012Hubert Klinger-Lohr becomes the new Managing Director of the Group.

Expansion of manufacturing sites and build-up of a European distribution network with a 24/7 service.

Una estación de regulación y medida (ERM) se instala a la entrada de gas de las centrales de ciclo combinado, y tiene como función regular la temperatura y presión de suministro de combustible a la turbina para mantener siempre el máximo rendimiento, así como medir el caudal y la composición de gas suministrado a la instalación.

Las ERM se diseñan, construyen y suministran incluyendo todos los equipos necesarios para su funcionamiento y control.

En cualquier aplicación industrial donde se trabaje con gas combustible, las condiciones reque-ridas por la instalación difieren en temperatura y presión de las que suministra el gasoducto. Por ello, será necesaria la instalación de estaciones de regulación y medida. En particular, para que las turbinas de gas funcionen optimizando su rendimiento, así como para su protección ante fallos del sistema, golpes de presión, partículas en suspensión, condensación del gas o cualesquiera condiciones adversas, el combustible que utilizan debe de cumplir con una serie de requisitos muy estrictos.

SKID-MOUNTED EQUIPMENT | EQUIPOS SKID

A Regulation and Measuring Station (RMS) is installed at the inlet of the gas combined cycle plants, and their mainly function is to regulate the temperature and pressure of the gas supply to the turbine to always maintain the highest performance and to measure the flow rate and composition of gas supplied to the plant.

A Regulation and measuring station consists of a series of mounted equipment on one or more skids and specifically design in accordance with the installation conditions and the gas supplier company specifications.

The RMS is designed, built and delivered including all the equipment needed for its operation and control.

In any industrial application where natural gas is present, the conditions required by the insta-llation differ in temperature and pressure of the conditions supplied by the pipeline. Therefore, the installation of regulation and measuring stations will be needed. In particular, this is really important for gas turbines in order to optimize their performance and protect it against system failures, pressure shocks, solid particles, condensation of gas or adverse conditions. The gas used for the turbine gas must meet very stringent requirements.

» Válvula de corte (Emergency shut down valve (ESDV). Se trata de una o varias válvulas de emergencia que se colocan como primera etapa; justo después de la toma de gas en el gasoducto, y anteriormente al resto de la ERM. Normalmente abiertas, están actuadas mediante un cilindro de simple efecto (spring return) de tipo yugo escocés y alimentadas por el propio gas de la línea. Monitorizan el gas y la temperatura a la entrada de la instalación, siendo su función exclusivamente de seguridad, es decir, asegurar el cierre en cuanto se detecte cualquier problema que pudiera poner en riesto los equipos principales de la planta.

Each Regulation and Measuring station usually includes the following:Una ERM incluye habitualmente las siguientes etapas:

» Emergency shut down valve (ESDV). It is one or more emergency valves placed as the inlet to the RMS; between the gas pipeline of the customer and the RMS. This valve is nor-mally open, and are actuated by a single acting cylinder (spring return) scotch yoke and fed by the gas line itself or by an electrohydraulic actuator (EH actuator). These valves monitor the gas and the temperature at the entrance of the RMS, and its function is exclusively the security of the installation, for example closing the gas supply in case that appears any problem that might jeopardize the main plant equipment.

» Filters. It is essential that the turbine receives gas completely clean, without any particles, condensation or impurities that might cause problems. Usually two different filtering stages are placed. The first built in carbon steel, made a first selection of solid particles, rust, condensates or impurities that could come from the pipeline, and it’s usually placed before the inlet to the metering area. In addition to the above filters a second stage is used at the output of the regulation stage and before the turbine for a finer filter, blocking the passage of any further impurities that could be generated within the RMS. This second stage is usually made of stainless steel to prevent entrainment of rust particles that could damage the tur-bine. Filter units may be of several types: cartridge, cyclone separators... This equipment normally also incorporates condensate tanks, isolating valves, drains and all the instrumen-tation needed to control this system.

» Filtros. Es esencial que la turbina reciba el gasa totalmente limpio, sin ningún tipo de par-tículas, condensaciones o impurezas que pudieran causar problemas. Habitualmente se colocan dos etapas diferentes de filtrado. La primera de ellas, construida en acero al car-bono, hace una primera criba de partículas sólidas, óxido, condensados o impurezas que pudieran provenir del gasoducto, y normalmente se coloca antes de la entrada a la zona de medición. Además de los filtros anteriores se coloca una segunda etapa a la salida de la zona de regulación, antes de la turbina para conseguir un filtrado más fino, bloqueando el paso de alguna impureza adicional que se pudiera generar dentro de la propia ERM. Esta segunda etapa suele estar fabricada en acero inoxidable para evitar el arrastre de partículas de óxido que pudieran dañar la turbina. Las unidades de filtrado pueden ser de varios tipos: de cartucho, separadores ciclónicos, etc. También suelen incorporar tanques de condensados, válvulas de corte, drenajes y toda la instrumentación necesaria para controlar el sistema.

FILTERS | FILTROS

PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE | REGULACIÓN DE PRESIÓN

» Pressure Control Valve. Pressure and temperature must be controlled to the optimum point that maximizes the performance of the turbine. These parameters depend from its design (brand and model) and from the conditions of the gas pipeline inlet. Therefore a pressure reduction and control stage is required. Depending of each customer installation different configurations (control valves mounted in series and / or parallel) will be used to ensure the proper system operation and the protection of the turbine to any emergency. The most common system involves the placement of an active pressure regulation valve (PRV) with other unit that will act as a monitor of the system and remains completely open, without interfering with the system, acting only in case of failure of the first unit. The regula-tion stage is critical in the system and therefore always be redundant design.

» Válvula Reguladora de Presión. Tanto la presión como la temperatura han de ser regu-ladas hasta el punto óptimo que maximice el rendimiento de la turbina. Estos parámetros dependerán tanto de su diseño —marca y modelo— como de las condiciones a las que el sistema recibe el gas de la red. Por tanto se necesita una etapa de reducción y el control de la presión. Dependiendo de los requisitos de cada instalación se utilizan diferentes configu-raciones (válvulas reguladoras montadas en serie y/o paralelo) para garantizar el funciona-miento del sistema y la protección de la turbina ante cualquier emergencia. El sistema más habitual contempla la colocación de una válvula reguladora activa a continuación de otra unidad que actuará como monitor del sistema y que permanece completamente abierta, sin interferir en el sistema, actuando sólo en caso de fallo de la primera unidad. La etapa de regulación es fundamental en el sistema y por ello su diseño siempre será redundante.

» Heating unit.The temperature at which the fuel from the pipeline is received is usually less than that required by the turbine. In fact, sometimes the gas may contain small ice particles that can damage the turbine in the case of achieving it. Furthermore, the gas temperature in the pressure reduction stage (due to the expansion of the gas) decreases its temperature.

Therefore there should be a system of natural gas heating, which can be of various types: Shell and tube heat exchangers, electric heaters, indirect heating water baths… In many cases, the residual steam of the combined cycle is used to preheat the gas used.

HEATING UNIT | UNIDAD DE CALENTAMIENTO

» Unidad de calentamiento. La temperatura a la que se recibe el combustible que proviene del gasoducto suele ser inferior a la requerida por la turbina. De hecho, en algunas ocasiones el gas puede contener pequeñas partículas de hielo que dañarían la turbina en el caso de alcanzarla. Además, el gas pierde temperatura ante la expansión que sufre en la etapa de regulación de la presión.

Por todo ello debe disponerse de un sistema de calefacción de gas natural, que puede ser de varios tipos: intercambiador de calor —carcasa y tubos—, calentadores eléctricos, calentamiento indirecto por baño de agua, etc. En muchas ocasiones, se utilizará el propio vapor residual del ciclo combinado para precalentar el combustible.

» Metering unit. The gas supplier company needs to check that flowmeters are installed for exact flow of gas consumed for invoicing purposes. These flowmeters can be of various types, being ultrasonic meters type the most expensive but with the best repeatability and uncertainty parameters and turbine meters (the cheapest) the most used meter types. This equipment is usually specified by the gas supplier company.

It’s also needed consider that the gas is not invoiced by volume or weight because it’s invoiced as energy (measured in kWh). Therefore, it is necessary to know the heat value (HV) of the gas, as the flowmeter will give us only the volume of gas that has crossed the line. For this HV a chromatograph, properly calibrated, which is responsible for providing the data on the composition and HV of the gas will be installed.

The measuring stages (or metering skids) for economic reasons normally will be duplicated and this is a must requirement for the gas supplier company.

METERING UNIT | UNIDADES DE MEDIDA

» Unidades de medida. La compañía suministradora necesita, para facturar, que se instalen caudalímetros para conocer el caudal exacto de gas consumido. Estos caudalímetros pueden ser de varios tipos, siendo los ultrasónicos —más caros y precisos— o los de turbina —más económicos— los más habituales. Estos equipos están especificados normalmente por la compañía gasística.

Además, hay que tener en cuenta que el gas no se factura por volumen o peso, sino que se factura como energía (medido en KWh). Por tanto, es necesario saber cuál es el poder calorífico del gas, pues el caudalímetro nos dará únicamente el volumen del gas que ha atravesado la línea. Para conocer este poder calorífico se instala un cromatógrafo, debidamente calibrado, que se encargará de aportar el dato de la composición y el poder calorífico del gas.

Las unidades de medida (o metering skids), por motivos económicos, siempre estarán duplicadas, siendo esto una exigencia fundamental de la compañía que suministra el combustible.

INSULATION GASKETSInsulation sets are used to limit corrosion in pipeline systems. Where dissimilar metals are present, the sets remove the possibility of the system acting as a galvanic cell and reduce the risk of galvanic corrosion of the pipework.

They are also used to isolate cathodically protected piping systems where they prevent the flow of electrostatic charge.
