Why Primary Secondary Piping Systems?
Allows for boiler redundancy Boilers operate in the most efficient temperature range Boilers are operated to match building load at any given
time Primary loop flow control via VFD (i.e. summer DHW
load) One heating plant supplies all ancillary heating systems of
the building from hallway make up air, DHW, suite heating, garage heating etc.

Variable Frequency Drives (VFD)
• Cold water booster pumps
• Make up air fans
• Primary boiler pumping
• Injection pump
Large horsepower electric motors operating at 70% FLA can save up to 50 % of the electrical consumption

Summary
Maximizing natural gas savings in residential high-rise buildings is a combination of ;
• Efficient boilers in proper piping configuration
• Heating plant turn down ratio to match building loads
• System load monitoring through DDC
• Instantaneous low storage DHW systems.
• Variable frequency drives and ventilation scheduling • When properly designed primary secondary piping systems combined
with efficient boilers, instantaneous DHW systems, suite heating control and accompanied by DDC, will achieve natural gas savings in excess of 25%, while providing a multi-residential building with a reliable efficient heating plant.
