From the Associate Dean Dr. Ann Eisenberg
a wonderful opportunity to learn more about an international public health issue AND the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar-ship. If you have ever imagined spending a year abroad, you should definitely come to hear Rafa! No RSVP is necessary, but if you would like to join the freshmen afterwards at an Ice Cream Social, please no-tify us at [email protected] so that we can be sure to have enough ice cream!
The rest of the year's activities are not entirely planned yet, but we are looking to host some Honors service events, some lectures that fit with the theme of change, and we will have a photography competition in October centered on the theme of “Be the Change You Wish to See.” Students will be asked to submit a photo that they believe illustrates the theme and to submit a brief explanation of how they be-lieve their photo represents the theme. All photos will be posted on the Honors College website, and a panel of judges will select three winners, whose photos will be hung in the Honors College. If you are interested in submitting a photo, keep on eye on your UTSA e-mail box!
We also have a range of other activities planned through the year, some of which are listed in this newsletter. Come join other members of the Honors College at lectures, plays, and of course, Casino Night. Please take the time to look through this newsletter to get a sense of what YOU can participate in as an Honors student! Have a great fall semester!
Yours,
I want to extend a warm welcome to all our new freshmen and a warm welcome back to all sopho-mores, juniors, and seniors! We hope you are all geared up for another productive year at UTSA!
We are pleased to announce that, over the summer, we were able to hire a third academic advisor. When you visit the Honors College Office this fall, please welcome Ms. Sherry Whitmore, who is joining our ad-vising team. Sherry has a wealth of experience in advising, both at UTSA and elsewhere, so we know she will be able to help us out a great deal. With three, full-time advisors, we should also do a better job of meeting student demand when things get busy in October and November. This year, we are expanding the Common Book Reading Experience that we started with freshmen last year and plan to have activities for a Honors Freshman Experience throughout the year. Our theme -- stolen from a Mahatma Gandhi quotation -- is "Be The Change You Wish to See.” Those of you who read our common book, We Are All The Same, last year will recognize that the theme of the year fits well with the theme of the book -- that one person can make a huge difference in the world. The program will kick off during Roadrunner Days with a lecture by UTSA Honors graduate, Rafael Veraza ('08). After his graduation from UTSA, Rafael spent a year in Ga-borone, Botswana as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. He took courses in demography and health at the University of Botswana, but also did a great deal of health-related volunteer work, including a long stint in a teen HIV/AIDS clinic, and attended the Inter-national HIV/AIDS Conference in South Africa. Rafael will share his experiences with the audience and discuss his impression of the HIV/AIDS situation in sub-Saharan Africa. Rafael begins the Master's of Global Health program at Emery University in August, but is coming back to UTSA for the talk. ALL mem-bers of the Honors College are welcome (see page 7 of this newsletter for more details). This is

Advisors’ Corner
Greetings Honors College Students!
W elcome new members and welcome back returning members! Summer went by way too fast, and the fall semester will be no different. Classes begin Wednesday, Au-
gust 26th, and you will want to start the semester as prepared as possible. As the head of Honors Aca-demic Advising, my job is to help prepare you for what lies ahead here at UTSA. I hope you will take the time to read some of the important dates listed on page 30 and mark them on your personal calendar to reference throughout the semester. If you have taken summer courses at a community college or another university, make certain to have final transcripts sent to the Regis-trar’s office. I can’t stress how important it is for you to become fa-miliar with your UTSA email account and the many helpful student resources contained on ASAP. If you are having trouble logging in or have been locked out of your account, please visit the Enrollment Services Office, located on the first floor of the John Peace Li-brary(JPL) building to have your password reset. We frequently communicate with you through your “my.utsa.edu” email account, and we don’t want you to miss out on important deadlines, information, and op-portunities. I also want to encourage you to visit the Honors Col-lege website for information on scholarships, scholar-ship deadlines, articles about your peers’ experiences as Honors students, conference news, and resources you may need. The forms you often ask us for are linked on the HC website for your convenience. Seniors who are graduating in fall 2009 need to apply as soon as possible to participate in the Honors Col-lege graduation fall ceremony. Visit the Honors College website at http://www.utsa.edu/honors/hcforms.html to locate the form to participate in the Honors College Commencement ceremony, which takes place on Fri-day, December 18th. We will apprise you of the time
and location as accommodations are confirmed. Seniors graduating in spring 2010 must apply for graduation by November 15, 2009. All the information you need regarding the application process can be found on the UTSA website at, http://www.utsa.edu/registrar/graduation.cfm New Honors College members, please consider getting involved in the University Honors Student Association (UHSA). As a member of the Honors College, you are automatically a member of this student-run organiza-tion, which provides a forum for you to get to know fel-low Honors students, expand your UTSA experience beyond the classroom in a social setting, and make a contribution to the success of the Honors College! We will send you invitations to various UHSA activities throughout the semester, so again – read your “my.utsa.edu” email on a regular if not daily basis! You can also find the UHSA on “Facebook” – search for ”UTSA Honors College Student Association.” We are proud of your academic success and look for-ward to helping you continue as one of the best and brightest at UTSA! Check out this story about one of our recent Honors College Graduates, Carina Dudas, at http://www.utsa.edu/honors/spotlight.html. Her story may inspire you to do your very best!

T he Honors College is growing and is thrilled to welcome the newest addition to the staff. Ms. Sherry Whitmore, a vibrant, enthusiastic, and experienced Advisor, has been taking care of UTSA students’
needs for the past nine years in the College of Sciences. She is passionate about education and delighted to be in the Honors College because so many students are excited not just about getting a degree, but about learning. Having grown up in the Sierra Nevada in California, she has always loved the outdoors and biology. She received her Bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of California at Riverside and then went on to earn her Mas-ter’s in botany at the University of California at Santa Barbara. With this rich scientific background, she has advised many students and taught many science classes over the past twenty-six years, at colleges and universities in Cali-fornia, Pennsylvania, and San Antonio. She has also done extensive research in botany, and had the opportunity to name a fertile, hybrid fern found only in California. Ms. Whitmore says, “Doing your homework and researching are important paths to finding the correct answer.” She always encourages students to explore and find out what they like. She says that she is here to help students balance their interests and discover their own love of learning. She will primarily be working with students from the Col-leges of Liberal and Fine Arts, Education and Human Development, and Public Policy. Ms. Whitmore lives in Northern Bexar County with her husband and is active in environmental issues in San Anto-nio and the Hill Country. She enjoys learning about plants and the natural environment and also enjoys hiking and photography. So come by and visit the Honors College’s newest Advisor! She is eager to work with you and help you succeed!

F rom theaters to museums to textbooks, London was an amazing place to spend a semester. Studying abroad truly opened my eyes to aspects of Europe that don't come in textbooks or even tour guides. I've scraped up pennies to buy a slice of pizza in Italy, taken cabs all around Spain, walked through scary alleys in Athens, and experienced the breathtaking scenery of Ireland and Santorini. Having the liberty to travel with other classmates, stay in hostels, and
speak to natives was truly life changing. Now, as a future teacher, I feel much more prepared to promote cultural and linguistic diversity in my classroom and to al-ways encourage students to learn and experience beyond the confines of American culture. I now feel more comfortable around uncertainty, I manage my time and finances better, and, most importantly, I have a greater appreciation for education. Besides experiencing huge academic growth in learning about language and culture, I experienced exceptional personal growth. I realized that having air conditioning, a personal car, and a McDonald's on every corner were not exactly NECES-SARY things. I brought many other American accommodations into perspective and came to the conclusion that the adven-ture, experiences, and growth I sought would only come when I embraced personal courage and desire and set out to discover new and different things. Only then did I realize how vast the world really is, and how much more I still have to see and learn.
M y desire to travel was awakened during a high school trip to Europe in 2003 and has been alive in me ever since. My eyes were opened to a whole new dimension and I realized there was so much of the world I didn’t know about and was ready to ex-plore. I’ve traveled a lot since then. However, living in Paris, France for four
months was a new and wonderful experience. I learned that traveling is not quite the same as ac-tually living in a country. I was thousands of miles away from my family and from anyone I knew and, at times, it was difficult knowing I had to do everything on my own. But, this was a great way to become more self-reliant and independent. I lived with a French host family and was able to experience French culture more in depth. More importantly, it allowed me to become fluent in the French language. I also participated in a teach-ing internship where I taught English to French middle-school students. I got to travel all over Europe from Ireland to Morocco to Austria and every place in between. Arriving in new cities and countries, where different and unknown languages were spoken was a total adventure. Staying at hostels and randomly meeting people from all over the world was exhilarating. Visiting all the places I had heard about and only seen in movies and books was amazing! This experience has helped me open my eyes and become more accepting and understanding of others. I have learned to not be so judgmental and, instead, to try to see things from someone else’s perspective. This experience should help me to become a more understanding and open-minded physician, as well as to have greater respect for different cultures and belief systems. I plan on doing a medical internship in Buenos Aires, Argentina next summer and to continue ex-ploring other parts of the world while learning more about medicine. After traveling so much and seeing more of the world, I have realized my desire to see the world is still alive.
