What is renewable energy in architecture?A resource which is generated from sources which are not finite or exhaustible, in order to achieve sustainability in a building.

These renewable energy practices save money, result in more attractive buildings, and they improve the environment and strengthen the economy by reducing the need for fossil fuels and nuclear energy.

The use of a building's structure to capture sunlight and store heat will reduce the need for electric lights and improves the visual qualities of a space. Also save up to 50 % of the energy used in a home.

Sunlight as renewable energy in heating.

Example: West-facing windows transmit especially large amounts of heat in the afternoon, and they can cause extensive overheating. Low energy design requires the use of solar shading, by means of awnings, blinds or shutters, to relieve the solar heat gain in summer and to reduce the need for artificial cooling.

Wind as renewable energy in cooling.

To enhance passive cooling, a building's windows should be placed and designed to capture prevailing winds.

A casement window that opens to the wind can allow breezes into the building; a window on the opposite side will allow stagnant air to be flushed out.

The use of breezes for cooling can be used in conjunction with the natural tendency of hot air to rise. With a high point designed in a building, the natural movement of hot air to the ceiling can be combined with an opening to the outside.

How does the wind work outside the Deck House?

As naturally occurring wind blows across a building, the wind hits the windward wall causing a direct positive pressure.

The wind moves around the building and leaves the leeward wall with a negative pressure, also known as a sucking effect.

If there are any openings on the windward and leeward walls of the building, fresh air will rush in the windward wall opening and exit the leeward wall opening to balance and relieve the pressures on the windward and leeward walls.

Raised on stilts allowing adequate ventilation and capture high velocity wind.

Vegetation can help modify the external wind direction so as to enhance ventilation as well as cool incoming air. Dense shrubs and tree canopies should be kept clear of windows and other openings to minimise obstruction to air movement.

High trees with large canopies, reduce significantly the wind speed in the area of the group of trees and downwind.

How does the wind work inside the Deck House?

The wind blow air through openings in the wall on the windward side of the building, and suck air out of openings on the leeward side and the ceiling.

Stack Ventilation: Temperature differences between warm air inside and cool air outside cause the air in the room to rise and exit at the aluminium louvre on the top.

Vegetation and Landscape

Natural Vegetation provide a cool Micro-Climate.

Trees around does not only reduce solar radiation but the evaporation process also helps to cool the air.

The big canopies provide shade and allowing the use of full-length windows to capture the wind.

Building Placement

The house raised on stilts capture winds of higher velocity.

Elevated between lower canopy and higher canopy in order to avoid wind-break and does not block the passage of winds.

Open Floor Plan

The quality of openness is reflected by the large open interior spaces with minimal partitions and double-volume spaces.

The minimal interior walls allowing the air to move much more freely, in some cases eliminating the need for extensive ductwork.

Openings PlacementStack Ventilation

Full-length openable windows are used to achieve ventilation at body level. Thus, maximized heat dissipation from body.

The use of breezes for cooling can be used in conjunction with the natural tendency of hot air to rise. With a high point designed in a building, the natural movement of hot air to the aluminium louvers at the highest part of the house. This design emphasizes the importance of stack ventilation and also achieve aesthetic purpose.

The openable full-length window that opens to the wind can allow breezes into the building; a window on the opposite side will allow stagnant air to be flushed out.

How does the natural ventilation help in reducing energy consumption?Natural ventilation in the Deck House saves significant amounts of fossil fuel based energy by reducing the need for mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning.

From an environmental point of view, air-conditioning emits lots of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is one of the primary contributor to green house gas effect and global warming.

How does the natural ventilation help in reducing energy consumption? The terms zero emission apply to buildings that use renewable energy sources on site to generate energy for their operation, so that over a year the net amount of energy generated on site equals the net amount of energy required by the building.
