National Science Foundation

Established by Congress with the National Science Foundation Act of 1950 to consist of the National Science Board (NSB) and the Director“to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity and welfare; and to secure the national defense”As an independent federal agency, NSF does not fall under any cabinet department.NSF activities are guided by the National Science Board.
