The Lindis Pass Conservation Group Inc. is in

its 8th year carrying out conservation work in

the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve, in partnership

with the Department of Conservation.

Volunteers converge from Alexandra, Tarras,

Wanaka and Twizel over the spring to autumn

period to battle weeds within the reserve and

collect up an amazing amount and variety of

roadside rubbish

Removal of sweet brier was an early focus to

protect the clean sweep of tall tussock landscape.

Russell lupin and yellow tree lupin are now also

targeted pests, as they are beginning to invade the

tussocklands, competing with native plants.

The Group is also exploring ways of speeding up

tall tussock regeneration, under DOC permit. In

spring 2011 350 tussocks grown by Otago

Polytech in Cromwell from seed collected in the

Pass were planted out over a variety of

experimental sites, with a further 200 tussocks

grown from split mature tussocks by Wanaka’s Te

Kakano nursery planted out this spring. The aim

is to provide pockets of snow tussock in the bare

areas as seed source to speed up recovery of the

ecosystem. This work was funded by the

Community Conservation Fund.

The LPCG offers a special opportunity to carry

out work in a stunning sub-alpine environment

with very satisfying visible results. Fresh

volunteers are welcome. There are around 6

workdays every season, on a weekend with one

coming up on Sat 1st Dec. All tools and gear are

provided. The work is also ideal for Duke of

Edinburgh or similar youth and community

service programmes.

Terry The Tarantula and Ruby The Red Back have been enjoying the recent sunshine but wish to point out that they were not the subjects of a complaint to police for nude sunbathing by the lake.

You may think that you have come across a spider lying in the sunshine only to find that what you are actually looking at is its discarded skin. Spiders have no inner skeleton and in order to grow they must shed their rigid external skin; this can happen four to 12 times before reaching maturity. As young spiders Terry and Ruby will undergo this moulting process several more times.

Finding a spider’s discarded skin can be almost as scary as the real thing. If you’d like to avoid an unnecessary fright call the experts!

Its warming up out there and people are out and about. Although sadly, not just people out to enjoy the sunshine. There have been a number of thefts reported this week.

Clothing was stolen from a washing line in Albert Town, a scooter was stolen from Kahu Youth, and a mountain bike stolen from an alleyway in town.

There was also a report of a vehicle stolen from a car park in town, which was later located in a residential street. Please do not leave your keys in your vehicle.

If you have information in relation to these incidents, we would be interested in speaking to those responsible. Please call us at the station on 03 443 7272 to speak to an Officer.

Also, a 51 year old Wanaka resident was arrested for shoplifting from New World.

There was an incident of wilful damage in Kiromiko Crescent where a gap was forced in fencing to allow a vehicle to drive through where they went 4 wheel driving in the forestry block. They have left a few things behind them making their activities obvious. Again we would be interested to hear who was responsible for this.

A vehicle crash was attended by Police on McKay Road, where the driver fishtailed and overturned into the middle of the road. Luckily the driver came away with minor injuries after she was removed from the vehicle by Fire staff. I would say this is an excellent advert for why seat belts should be worn. However, I was disappointed to hear a tractor drove around the upside down vehicle while the driver was trapped inside and unsuccessfully struggling to get out. Are you serious? When did we stop looking after each other?

Another vehicle crash was reported at the intersection of Link Way and Anderson Road, where a driver slowly collided with a cyclist, knocking them off their bike. The crash was reported to us at a later time, and we would like to hear from the young lady driving the vehicle. That is the third cyclist we have had knocked of their bicycle since mid October. To the cyclists please wear your helmet, and to the motorists remember to give cyclists plenty of room, you will have seen the signs about “Sharing the Road”.

I was touched at the amount of community support shown to me in the street after last week’s Crimeline report, as written by Constable Gillespie. I am getting over my attendance at that incident, although . . . my eyes are still burning.

Lastly, remember there are some light fingered types about, so lock your stuff.
