and teaching currently being performed on acampus where institutional boundaries andhie rarchies are overcome.

Freedom and space for new ideas, for culturaldiversity, and for interdisciplinary and interna-tional exchange: on the basis of these princi-ples, we seek to cultivate our modern-day libertas academica, and to secure it lastingly. Inconcert with our partners on the GöttingenCampus, we are building a network of scientistsand scholars arguably unique in Germany, en-abling here the performance of cutting-edgeresearch and outstanding teaching, and pre -paring our graduates to pursue their own indi-vidual career tracks with success.

I hope the pages that follow will bring theseGöttingen aims and developments into focusfor you.

Prof. Dr. Ulrike Beisiegel President of Göttingen University

The University of Göttingen was inaugurated in1737 with the aspiration to cultivate critical reflection and provide academic freedom in research and teaching. Rooted in the Age of Enlightenment, these fundamental principlesstill hold in Göttingen today.

On the occasion of the University’s 50th an-niversary, the Göttingen scholar Christian Gott-lob Heyne stressed the libertas academica thatcharacterised this institution. »Göttingen hasbeen elevated to such great worthiness and re-pute through this alone and through nothingelse; it has carried the torch before other uni-versities and states and has been exceptionallysignificant in the transitions taking place in sci-ence«. In the early twentieth century, mathe-matician Richard Courant remarked on theUniversity’s special atmosphere of communi-cation and productive academic discourse. This»Göttingen spirit« also enriches the research

COMMITTED TO ...

The University of Göttingen is acknowledged tobe a research university of high internationalstanding. Its distinctive features include the em-phasis placed on research-based teaching and theremarkable diversity of subjects represented, par-ticularly in the humanities. The excellent facilitiesfor scientific inquiry in the natural sciences andthe outstanding quality of research in this areaalso contribute to the University’s clear andunique profile. In 2007, on the basis of its Insti-tutional Strategy entitled »Göttingen. Tradition –Innovation – Autonomy«, the Georg-August-Universität was one of the universities to emergesuccessfully in the first phase of the ExcellenceInitiative of the German Federal and State Gov-ernments. This funding was employed to set upnew research centres such as the Courant Cen-tres and the Lichtenberg-Kolleg, and to establishinnovative research foci. In addition, highlypromising young academics were recruited, andleading researchers integrated on the GöttingenCampus. The measures have led to an overall

... THE FUTURE

strengthening of the University’s visibility, bothnationally and internationally, and they will becarried forward into the future.

The University bears the name of its founderGeorg August, King George II of Great Britain,Elector and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg(Hanover). In keeping with the spirit of the En-lightenment, the faculties were founded as equalentities: no longer did Theology take precedenceamong them. The first Faculty of Mathematicsand Natural Sciences came into being in Göttin-gen. Over a considerable period the Universitywas regarded as the centre of the mathematicalworld, but this status was lost in 1933, whenunder Nazi rule more than 50 professors and lec-turers were forced to leave. Among these re-searchers were several of the 45 Nobel laureateswhose names are associated with Göttingen.

After World War II, Göttingen was Germany’s firstuniversity to resume teaching operations. It ex-panded to become one of Germany’s largest, thenumber of students enrolled currently standing atapproximately 29,300. The University works con-stantly to enhance the international nature and ex-cellence of its research and teaching. Study pro-grammes have been converted to Bachelor andMaster degree structures. The University operateson the basis of increased autonomy and staff self-responsibility at all levels, and the deployment ofresources has been optimised. In 2003, Göttingen

became Germany’s first university with a compre-hensive range of disciplines to take the legal formof a foundation under public law.

In the second phase of the Excellence Initiative,Göttingen University successfully submitted re-newal proposals for the support of a GraduateSchool and an Excellence Cluster. In the Clusterof Excellence »Microscopy at the NanometerRange and Molecular Physiology of the Brain«(CNMPB), high resolution microscopy techniques,by way of which minute structures and processescan be analysed in living nerve cells, are beingfurther developed. The aim is to gain insights thatmay enable new diagnostic and therapeutic strate-gies to be adopted to combat diseases such asParkinson’s and schizophrenia. The successfulwork of the Göttingen Graduate School for Neu-rosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences(GGNB) is also being continued. Maintained byfour University Faculties, three Max Planck Insti-tutes and the German Primate Center, the GGNBcurrently hosts 430 doctoral researchers workingwithin twelve programmes.

In addition, the University will continue to pursueprojects set out in its second Institutional Strategy.Funding has been raised to bring about markedimprovement in the scientific investigation andpresentation of the University’s precious academiccollections, as well as to expand its IT-based E-research infrastructure.

RESEARCH ...

6

Among Göttingen University’s particular strengthsare its great research tradition and the diversity ofsubjects represented. Almost all academic disci-plines, including Medicine but with the exceptionof the Engineering Sciences, are represented at the13 Faculties. The University is closely inter connec -ted with outstanding research institutions situatedlocally. This network constitutes the Göttin genCampus, where such cooperation generatesideal framework conditions for conducting top-level, inter nationally competitive research andopens up special possibilities for the recruitmentand retention of excellent researchers from in-and outside Germany. The University and its part -ners place emphasis on fostering talented youngresearchers who exhibit particular potential.

The success of this cooperation is borne out bythe jointly run Collaborative Research Centres,Research Training Groups, shared infrastructurefacilities and combined professorial appoint-ments. Ten Collaborative Research Centres, fourResearch Units and ten Research Training Groupswith coordinator function are currently hostedby Göttingen University – impressive evi denceof the scientific strength of the Göttingen Campusand the close cooperation between the Univer-sity and the non-university research institutions. The development in the context of Collabora-tive Research Centres is particularly positive, their number having risen from three (2009) toten (2015).

Page 7: THE UNIVERSITY OF ÖTTINGEN · Primate Cognition Solar System Research Sustainable Use of Natural Resources Humanities Digital Transformation Language and Cognition Religious Studies

7

Göttingen is therefore a competitive research lo-cation in the national comparison, particularlywith a view to Research Training Groups, whereit ranks as one the top Universities in Germany.

Research foci developed together with the non-university research institutions, in particular inthe neuro- and biosciences, are defining featuresin the University’s profile. An Excellence Clusterand a Graduate School in this area were success-fully established with funding from the first phaseof the Excellence Initiative (2006-2012). The ex-ceptionally innovative work of both entities con-tinues, and will be further developed and refinedas they move into their next operational phase(see page 5).

Also exemplifying the excellent science andscholarship being conducted at internationallevel are the fields of Cardiovascular Research,Molecular Biology, Condensed Matter, Biology,Biodiversity and Ecology, Development Econom-ics, Religious Studies, and Modern East Asianand Indian Studies.

STUDYING ...

The University of Göttingen is increasingly attrac-tive to students as a location for both undergradu-ate and graduate level studies. Study programmeswith new orientation, individual supervision, andcourses with an international profile – in the do-main of study and teaching, the University’s en-gagement is manifest, as borne out by its successin the programme for improved study conditionsand teaching quality financed jointly by the Ger-man Federation and the Länder. COLLECTIONS, MUSEUMS, ...

Göttingen University has many impressive col -lec tions of international importance, some ofwhich date back to the 18th century. At thattime, objects from different areas of knowledgeattracted students and researchers to the then-new university.

Today, the curators of the collections still stressthe importance of the collection pieces’ use inresearch and teaching, and are supported intheir work by the Central Curator staff. Theseindividuals ensure that the objects can be pre-served long-term and explored by researchersfrom a variety of disciplines. Digital accessibilityand presentation to the public are also part ofthe programme. During »Sunday walks«, inter-ested parties can already visit six of the collec-tions. The Botanical Gardens, the Collection ofMathematical Models and Instruments, theComputer Museum and the Kirchhoff Collec-tion are also open daily for visitation.

Open dialogue between researchers and every-day citizens will have a permanent place in thefuture Göttingen Science Museum. Objects fromthe collections are not only meant to stimulatediscussion about current and historical research, but also to give insights into laboratories, work-shops and libraries on the Göttingen campus.
