Methodist Messenger

Letter to Congregation from Rev. Kiboko

Join us for Worship: Saturday- Casual @ 5:30 p.m. Sunday - Traditional @ 8:30 a.m.

Sunday School @ 9:45-10:45 a.m. (During School Year) Coffee & Fellowship in FLC @ 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Sunday - Contemporary @ 11:00 a.m.

CONFIRMATION SERVICE—DATE TO BE DETERMINED Tyler Bauer, Monica David, Landon DeMoss, Charlie Dvergsten, Maddison Fiorendino, Tyler Magnussen, Trevor Meyer and Peyton Phillips are completing the program via home study with their mentors.

Thank you to everyone who wore a tie to services on March 7th &

8th. As John Fawcett in 1792, was communicating with his poem

which became the hymn ‘Blest Be the Tie That Binds’, community

is what bind us together.

Little did we know that what was to come, prevents us from wor-

shipping together, but does not change that we are a community.

This picture was taken on August 31, 2019 on Freda’s wedding day in Shueyville, IA. From left to right: Betty is standing by our daughter (Freda- She is in white); fol-lowed by her husband (Hugues), Kiboko, Grace, and Raissa. Our oldest daughter and her family were not at the wedding as they were on the path of the hurricane in Florida.

Greetings in the strong name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

I trust this note will find you in good health physically, emotionally,

and spiritually. I know by now you have heard that Bishop Laurie

Haller and her cabinet appointed Rev. Kiboko I. Kiboko as your new

pastor effective September 1, 2020. Yes, the person writing this note

is indeed Kiboko. My wife and I are very excited to come to Storm

Lake and be in ministry with you. We have not met with anyone in

person from Storm Lake except Rev. Phil Webb. “Pastor Kiboko, did

you come to Storm Lake to see Phil without letting us know?” I am

glad you asked that question. No, we did not to go Storm Lake. We

have known Phil for years.

God’s willing, we are going to come and see some of you before the

move. However, we have to follow our governor’s guidelines. At this point we are not able to tell you exact-

ly when. It might be toward the end of May. We are eager to know Storm Lake by reading from many of

you. Feel free to send letters to us (337 Barrington Pkwy, Marion, IA 52302).

Betty and I have 4 daughters. The oldest, Stephanie, is in Florida. She is a biomedical engineer. She is mar-

ried with three boys. Our second daughter’s name is Freda. She is currently working in Arizona as a nurse. (Continued on page 11)

Rev. Phil Webb Lead Pastor

Dear Friends;

As we enter our sixth week of having our church building closed, I am so eager to get

things open, but in this edition of The Messenger, there is an announcement that we will

continue to be closed, perhaps for the entire month of May.

I find myself dreaming about being able to worship in our Sanctuary and to have Bible

studies, and meetings and other normal church functions. But, my desires for this take a

back seat for the good of our church people. Let me talk about what I’m grateful for as

we go into the next month.

I am grateful that Kiboko I. Kiboko has been appointed our new pastor when I move to

Webster City. He is currently District Superintendent of the East Central District, and it’s

been my pleasure to have known him for many years. I know him, and his wife, Betty, to

be joyous people, grounded in the faith and truth of Jesus Christ. When he prays, you

know you’ve been taken to the Throne of God. He is humble and transparent, and very

intelligent (he speaks seven languages). There is more information about Kiboko in this

edition of The Messenger, be sure you bathe Kiboko and Betty in prayer as they prepare

to move to Storm Lake.

I’m grateful for the Monday Food Distribution which is still taking place. Full bags of food are taken to people

as they come to the kitchen door on the east side of the building. Our volunteers are busy! Thank you!

I’m grateful for those who are giving, as they are able, to the work of the church. Thank you!

I’m grateful for the ability to lead worship and have daily devotions that can be seen on our Facebook page

and on our website. And, for those who have so willingly participated in helping lead our worship services

(while wearing masks and keeping more than six feet away as we do). Thank you!

I’m grateful for the people and activity and mission behind the other notices you can read about in The Mes-

senger. And, I’m grateful for you, the people who are the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, and our Sav-

ior, Jesus Christ, in Whose name we do all that we do. Thank you!

God bless you, and if you need to talk or pray or ask questions, don’t hesitate to reach out and call me. We

continue to be the Church of God, wherever we are. God bless us, every one!

Sincerely in Christ,

Phil Webb

REMEMBER THE CHURCH IN YOUR GIVING:

Thank you to all those who are continuing to give to the great things this Church is known for in this community. In

these times, when so much is uncertain, the Finance Committee of the church asks that you continue to remember to ful-

fill your pledges as much as you're able. Also, if you don't pledge, but give to the ministries of this congregation, please

continue to do give as you have been. The church staff has been cutting expenses, including lowering heat in rooms that

currently don't need to be heated. There continue to be expenses that need to be paid, such as insurance, utilities, staff

compensation, parking lot snow removal (the sidewalks and steps are done, thankfully, by church volunteers), and in

April, we will have quarterly, contractual expenses coming up. We would like to be on a good financial footing as we

get back to normal, hopefully later this Spring. Please do what you are able, to God's glory. Again, thank you for what

you do to help this Church function as fully as possible in our community and world.

Everyone struggles sometimes. A difficult medical diagnosis, the loss of a job, the death of spouse, aging

parents, financial stress - every life includes rough spots. Feelings of pain, sadness, frustration, abandonment,

fear and shame can leave us isolated and alone. But, we aren’t meant to make the journey on our own, cut off

from people who love us and want to support us.

We have pathways that lead to care:

* Homebound Communion is always available to shut-in or ill church members. Please contact the office to

request communion.

* Homebound or Shut-In Members: If you are a shut-in or know a shut-in who needs care, please contact the

church office (732-5458) and ask for Lynn who will be happy to set up a time to visit with you.

* Bulletin/Messenger Prayer List: Please email the prayer contact to initiate a prayer request

([email protected]). If you would like the pastor to contact you regarding your concern,

let us know directly. Please note that concerns on the prayer list will be handled with sensitivity

and respect.

* Pastor Care: Pastor Phil is available to listen, encourage, provide spiritual support, pray with

and refer to appropriate resources. Please contact the pastor directly or call the office for a confidential

appointment.

* Hospital Visits: The pastor or ministry helper are available to visit members before, during or

after a stay in the hospital. Please be sure to call or have a family member call the office or the

pastor if you’d like a visit..

We want to be there for you!

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER The National Day of Prayer is observed annually on the first Thursday in May. This day of observance, designated by the United States Congress, asks people “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.” The modern law formalizing the annual National Day of Prayer observance was enacted in 1952 and each year since, the President of the United States has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.

Compiled History of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church 4th in Series

1892—Rev. Wilmot Whitfield was pastor of the Storm Lake Circuit in 1873. He conducted a series of revivals

which increased the membership from 71 to 142.

In January 1893, ‘there was a union revival meeting of Presbyterians and Methodists. Interest was very good. Sixty

persons expressed a desire to live a religious life. Rev. McAllister was pastor of the Presbyterian church and Rev. Whit-

field, pastor of the Methodist.’

‘On Sunday morning January 14th, of the following year (1894), these two pastors arranged a surprise for their con-

gregations, by exchanging pulpits. It was not known at either place until a few moments before the sermon began.

There were crowded houses at both places.’

1894—Samuel P. Wilson became our minister when he and Rev. Whitfield transferred pastorates. Rev. Wilson was

from Portland, Oregon.

The new parsonage was opened in December 1894. One afternoon a large number of friends and members of the

congregation from the country went in to congratulate their pastor and inspect the premises, and in the evening one of

the largest crowds we ever saw, gathered to pass an hour with social chat and hand shaking.

‘The surprise of the evening came when the members of the Epworth League elbowed their way through the crowd

dragging a fine rocking chair which was presented to Dr. Wilson on behalf of that body. It was a complete surprise, but

the recipient managed to say a few happy words and was followed in the same vein by his wife. The reception was a

success and if there was anyone absent, they certainly were not missed in the crowd.’

To be continued.
