SUNNY SUNDAY MORNINGS

Every Sunday I check in with the little group of people in our Sunday School. I love to see people meeting together in small groups, studying the Bible, sharing life together and building relationships. There is value in it!

I have heard it be said that Sunday School was a dinosaur. It was old-fashioned and ineffective. However, in recent surveys, amongst different denomination, there is a come back. This revival of Sunday School is based primarily on the fact that it serves as foundational to their evangelism and discipleship strategies but more importantly because our children and youth yearn for good biblical teaching that offers sound moral and ethical teachings.

Sunday School really does matter! Let me give you eight benefits to active participation in Sunday School. 1. You study the Bible, God’s Word. 2. You fellowship with other people as you walk with people in the highs and lows of life. 3. You minister to people in need. The church is stronger when Sunday School members care for and love one another. 4. You reach people with the Gospel. Bible teaching, healthy relationships, and personal concern foster a context for the Gospel to be shared, even introduces them to Jesus. 5. You pray for people in need. God’s people are called to “bear one another’s burdens” (Gal. 6:2). What a blessing to “stand in the gap” for people facing cancer treatments, strained relationships, career challenges, and spiritual emptiness! 6. You mature in Christ Jesus. Active involvement in Sunday School is a pathway to spiritual growth. 7. You fulfill the church’s vision. Our church’s vision is “to build relationships, one at a time. 8. You stay connected to the church and see members assimilate into the life and ministry of the church.

Sunday school classes begin on Sundays at 9:30 am throughout the summer. In the fall, the time remains the same but some changes are on the horizon.

In August we will have moved our youth and children’s ministry classes into the west wing (closest to fellowship building) of the Sanctuary space. The adult classes will meet in the fellowship and office building. Greeters will meet you at all the main entrances on Sunday mornings, and they will be trained and ready to help you find the right class. And yes, we have classes for all ages (infant – senior citizens) Sunday School teachers and assistants will be properly equipped and prepared to lead. Music ministry for the children and youth will also be included as part of the curriculum.

Between now and August please register your youth and children (yes, this is new and I realize you have never done it this way before). On pages 14-15 is the registration form to be filled out and will also be included on the website. Please also lift the Sunday School ministry up in prayer. If you wish to serve as teacher, assistant, greeter, snack provider or overseer in any way please contact me.

See you in Sunday School!

SILENT STRONG DAD by Karen K. Boyer

He never looks for praises. He's never one to boast.

He just goes on quietly working For those he loves the most.

His dreams are seldom spoken. His wants are very few,

And most of the time his worries Will go unspoken, too.

He's there...a firm foundation Through all our storms of life,

A sturdy hand to hold onto In times of stress and strife. A true friend we can turn to When times are good or bad. One of our greatest blessings,

The man that we call Dad

June Benevolence Focus

During the month of June our benevolence focus is Congo Mission International which seeks partnerships between churches in North America and those of the dynamic and growing Lutheran church in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the objective of fostering a mission awareness within churches in North America, and working with Pastor Didi Panzo (NALC Global Worker) in equipping Lutherans in Congo to become more effective in their proclamation of the Gospel and service to the people of God. Pastors Stéphane Kalonji and David Nuottila travel to Congo. They offer biblical and theological education, support the feeding of children suffering from hunger and malnutrition, “free” babies and mothers detained in clinics after birth due to the lack of funds to pay their bills, provide Bibles in local languages to leaders, support farming projects to help grow food locally, and minister in many other ways. Between mission trips, the two short-term missionaries maintain contacts with the local leaders and continue to support the work in Congo via email, telephone and social media.

Join us in Corpus Christi this August!

Every year, the North American Lutheran Church gathers for Lutheran Week! The week is more than a conference, more than a church festival and much more than a business meeting. The NALC Lutheran Week is all of that and more! This year’s theme is God the Father Creates. The 2021 Lutheran Week of the North American Lutheran Church will draw our attention to the person of God, the Father. Continuing the six-year cycle focusing on the persons and work of the Holy Trinity, the Braaten-Benne Lecture series and the NALC Mission Convocation will each aspire to point to the nature and being of God, the Father, who is creator of heaven and earth!

Update from Estonia...

Friends of Estonia, I’m sharing with you some updates about Bringing Hope to Estonia Campaign that was launched three months ago. During three months we have raised 220 000 dollars. This is amazing result and we are so thankful to all of you, our donors. It is an extraordinary experience to feel that so many people care about our work here in the suburb of the world. We also truly feel the power of your prayers. Although our activities were very limited during past months because of really hard COVID19 situation in Estonia we have not lost any of our projects, on the contrary, we are even launching a new project to offer pastoral care to the people in the rural area. This project is financed by the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs. We are filled with gratitude and hope. Bringing Hope to Estonia Campaign goal is to raise 750 000 dollars by the end of June this year. Please, don’t think that we are running a hopeless campaign, because we have only month and a half left and we are still missing 530,000 dollars. Our history proves that God is almighty and unbelievable things will happen. Home of Hope is one amazing example of it.

God bless you all, Pastor Siimon Haamer

President of Tartu Academy of Theology

Carolinas Lutheran Women (CLW) Convocation

The CLW Council has been busy at work planning the upcoming 2021 Annual Convocation. We have met several times via Zoom and have discussed a number of issues dealing with the event. We feel, based on the current COVID numbers and recommendations from the CDC, that we will be safe in gathering for our event on Saturday, October 2, 2021. Please rest assured that all precautions needed will be taken to keep everyone safe. One way this is being implemented is the change of location. Faith Lutheran Church, Faith, was originally scheduled to host us in 2021 before the 2020 Convocation was cancelled. They have graciously agreed to host us this year and have plenty of space for us to spread out as much as the conditions at that time dictate.

Good Timers The Good Timers met for their monthly meeting on May 13, 2021 in the Old Pine Center with Dawn Merrell presiding. Frank Merrell had devotions and prayer. Happy Birthday was sung to those celebrating birthdays in May: Sarah Holshouser (3), Faye Kesler (17), Jack Lanning (17), Rev. Heidi Punt (18), and Linda Kesler (28). There were no May wedding anniversaries. Sick Report: Lynn Coughenour (surgery on May 13), Betty Denker and Zarah Plyler suffered falls recently. Door Prizes were won by Dickie Shue and Rev. Heidi Punt. We had 10 members and 1 visitor (Ronnie Smith) present. An offering of $10.00 was received. For lunch today we had pizza from “Slice of Heaven” in Granite Quarry. We plan to go to Lakeview for lunch in June. A reminder to bring your “J” dollars to the June meeting. Dawn shared with us different uses of a cucumber which many of us may not be aware of and a warning to seniors when they go shopping by themselves. Our next program in June will be about “If Tombstones Could Talk.” Our program today was given by Ronnie Smith, a retired Air Force pilot. He spent 6 years in the Air Force and flew over 100 combat missions. He had a replica of the plane he flew which he carried the presidential limo and secret service crew to the different airports for the president (C 141 plane). He also flew a 02A Sky Master plan (FAC = Forward Air Control). He sat on a 3” steel plate in the plane which protected him from gunfire during combat missions. He would get weekly letters from home with his pop writing “May God always be your co-pilot.” He believed this is what brought him safely back home. He told several humorous stories about the service. He showed us his jungle boots and told about “Bat 21,” a true movie about Vietnam. Thanks to Ronnie for a very enjoyable and inspiring program. Respectfully Submitted, Ruby Leazer, Secretary
