Foreword

The Directors have thought it well to prepare a record of the

Members of the Staff of the Union Bank of Scotland, Limited,

who took part in the Great War of 1914-1918. To the names

have been added brief notes of the ranks and regiments, with

the areas and duration of service.

It is only fitting that such a record should contain an account

of the unveiling of the Memorial erected in the Head Office,

Glasgow, to preserve the memory to all time of those who gave

their lives in the service of their Country.

NORMAN L. HIRD,

General Manager.

Glasgow, September 1922.

War Memorial

In the presence of a large and representative company on

Wednesday, 26th April, 1922, His Grace the Duke of Atholl,

K.T., Chairman of the Bank, unveiled the Memorial erected

in the Head Office, Glasgow.

Mr. William Hutton, Director, who presided, said : We are

met to-day to do honour to the memory of the brave men on the

staff of the Union Bank who served and fell in the Great War.

The Memorial to be unveiled has been erected to provide a

permanent record of these men, and we trust that the form it

has taken may be deemed in some small way worthy of the object

in view. We have been fortunate in securing the services of

Mr. T. C. Campbell Mackie as designer of the Memorial, which

has a great wealth of symbolism ; the actual carving has been

carried out by Messrs. Martyn of Cheltenham.

Before calling on our Chairman, himself a distinguished

soldier, I would, on behalf of the Board, draw your attention to

the splendid part played by the Union Bank Staff in the War.

The number of our Staff when the War broke out in 19 14 was

Eight hundred and forty-two, and of these Eighty Territorials

were immediately mobilised. Before the War ended the very

large total of Five hundred and eighteen members of the Staff

had served in the War in one capacity or another. The number

of honours conferred on our men was Fifty-two, including OneDistinguished Service Order, Eleven Military Crosses, and

Two Distinguished Flying Crosses. A very considerable

number of commissions was held, and we had representatives

in no fewer than Sixty-three regiments. Unfortunately the

number of men who gave their lives was very heavy, and on

the Memorial now to be unveiled there appear the names

of Eighty-four members of the Staff.

Mr. Norman L. Hird, General Manager, read over the names

recorded on the Memorial.

The Duke of Atholl, in performing the ceremony, said : I

will now proceed to unveil a Memorial to members of the Staff"

of the Union Bank of Scotland who during the recent Wartransferred their services to the Army in order to fight for King

and Country, and who died in that service. How splendidly and

fearlessly they fought during those terrible years is shown by

the fact that Eighty-four men answered their last roll-call, while

Fifty-two were specially decorated for gallantry. When werecollect the type of man who is employed by the Union Bank

of Scotland, we can realise the gain, and then the loss, that they

were to our fighting forces, the almost irreparable gap that they

have left in our Staff, and the loss to our Country of some of

its finest and most intelligent men. I have heard it said that

some of the greatest pioneers of civilisation are our commercial

travellers. Equally it may be said that the great British banks

and their Staffs have done more to stabilise that civilisation and

bring about commerce, prosperity, and a proper spirit of thrift,

than any other body in the world. Wherever we go throughout

the world, wherever there is banking, we find Scotsmen con-

nected with the banking world, respected not only for their

business ability, but for the high sense of duty and decent

Christian living that they bring with them. Many of these lads

who fell might have had brilliant futures before them, and,

trained in this country, would probably have gone abroad and

continued those old traditions. Their loss may therefore be

looked upon as world-wide. There is, I fear, no man or womanin this building who has not had to mourn the loss during the

War of one very dear to them, but we have a great compensation

in feeling that those who have passed on were wanted, and were

fighting, for as great a cause as man ever fought for, while their

spirit was such that they themselves would not have had it

otherwise. We can memorialise them well by tablets such as

this. We can build great monuments to the memory of those

who fell, but these are material monuments fashioned by the

hand of man. The real lasting memorial they have built them-

selves by the aid of God, for they have set up an ethical monu-

ment of the spirit of sacrifice, loyalty, and gallantry that will

ever maintain their names hallowed in the history of their country.

It is for us to keep that memory untarnished and fresh, to tell

of it to our children, and for our children to tell it to their children,

and if we fail in that splendid spirit of understanding that wesaw amongst all sections of the people during the Great War,

and if we work for ourselves alone, and not for the community

at large, the sacrifice of those who lost their life will indeed have

been in vain, and we shall be unworthy of the great heritage

that they have left us. I now unveil this Memorial to the glory

WAR MEMORIAL

of God and to the memory of those Eighty-four men who fell

in the cause of honour, liberty and country.

The Rev. John White, D.D., of the Barony, dedicated the

Memorial and pronounced the Benediction.

The Memorial, placed in the vestibule of the Head Office,

in Glasgow, is designed by Mr. T. C. Campbell Mackie, Master

of Design in the Glasgow School of Art. The significance of

the symbols is as follows : Round the three panels containing

the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice grow the

Thorns of War, whilst below are represented the Dogs of War,

grim beasts let loose upon mankind. On either hand amidst

the thorns is the sheathed sword, symbolical of the achievement

of Peace through Valour and Might of Arms. On the lesser

growth of the thorns above grow the Sour Apples of Discord,

implying that there are always about us the elements of strife.

On the centre styles grow the Lilies of Peace, they are rooted

deep amongst the gnarled tentacles of War, whilst the topmost

buds just touch the fringe of the Thorns of War above. Somemight possibly interpret this part of the design as an implication

that Peace is merely an interlude 'twixt War and War—the

designer prefers rather that it should stand for the hope that

Peace is reaching up to overgrow the possibility of War in the

future. Above the dedication are put, as a crown to the whole,

the age-long symbols for the soul and eternal life—the Peacock

and the Vine. On the panels, inlaid in ebony, are further signifi-

cant details—the Oak for constancy, etc. Over each of the three

panels, which are recessed, the fretted canopies show the Rose,

the Thistle, and the Shamrock,

charge of a working party detailed to construct a trench

system, which it was imperative should be completed

quickly. The work took six hours, during which time the

party was subjected to heavy shell fire, and it was largely

due to this officer's coolness, disregard of danger and the
