The right location

deciding where your aquarium is going to live is an

important decision and deserves some preparation

and thought. once the tank is fully set up with water

and decorations it cannot be moved. The only

alternative is to completely empty and dismantle it

to start again in a new location - definitely noT a

good start to your new aquatic hobby!

Choosing the right place also depends on various

factors which may have undesirable effects on the

aquarium conditions. Radiators, sunny windows,

fireplaces and other sources of heat should be

avoided. TV’s, speakers, hi-fi and any other sources

of sound and vibration should be sited away from

the aquarium as this will cause distress to the fish.

locationStudy, dining room, living room, kitchen, entrance

hall and office - wherever its final position you can

be sure that your aquarium will attract interest from

visitors and children. Be careful if you are

considering using a conservatory - areas with

temperature fluctuations are inadvisable. don’t hide

it behind other furniture either - it deserves to be

seen in pride of place. Use the room planner on

pages 14 - 15 to help work out a good position.

You may want to change the existing furniture

arrangement to accomodate it too.

PowerItems of electrical equipment need access to mains

power, so bear this in mind when choosing a site.

Make sure you can reach the socket easily.

appliances where water spills may cause serious

damage or safety hazards.

Weight

Water is extremely heavy - around 1 kilo per litre.

even the smallest Roma aquarium holds 90 litres

- around 14 stones - and that’s before adding any

gravel or rocks! Always use the specially constructed

aquarium cabinet and give some thought to the

flooring too - is it strong enough to support the

combined weight of a filled aquarium and cabinet?

Fish stocking levels for nano aquariumsCare should be taken to avoid overstocking when selecting fish for a nano aquarium. Allow 1cm bodylength of fish (excluding the tail) to every 3 litres of water. Fish are usually sold as juveniles so allow some extra space for fish to grow. Bear in mind also that many miniature fish species must be kept in shoals of at least 4 or 5 individuals in order to thrive. Always consult your aquatic retailer for help and advice.
