    Why this book? Our experience

How did we come up with the idea for thisbook, a compilation of the best-priced rstlevel clinics for plastic surgery around the

world combined with extensive information onthe main plastic surgery procedures and usefultourism information for each destination?

I have been in touch with the medical tourismindustry for three years now. Living in BuenosAires, Argentina, and working for the mainmedical tourism clinic in the country, I have

spoken with hundreds of patients from abroadmainly interested in plastic surgery. People fromthe U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia,Netherlands, Latin America, even Africa, havetrusted me with their doubts, their concerns, theirquestions, their fears, and of course, their aestheticgoals and objectives. Through e-mail, by phone, and even through MSN, Ive talked to countlesspatients, and with time, have come to understandwhat traveling abroad for surgery represents andmeans for the patient.

A good friend of mine, Gabbi Chama, has spentthe past years traveling the world, and thus wasthe right person to take charge of the tourismsection of this book. He is also the main editor ofthis book. In the tourism section youll nd veryuseful information on numerous destinations, along with photos which will give you a generalidea on what kind of place youll be traveling to.

With our know-how combined, we realizedwe were in conditions to divulge what we hadlearned from our life experiences. We wantedto share the information and our expertise withthe English speaking general public, making itaccessible for everyone. After working severalyears in the business, I learned that many peopleare very interested in plastic surgery but are notwell informed and dont have easy access to highquality information. This added to the initiative ofputting this book together, in order to make things

easy and clear, and taking things step by step, forthe benet of those interested in plastic surgery.

    Initial recommendations

Feelings of uneasiness are very common, andjustied: it is not easy traveling to another countryfor surgery. Before traveling, it is important foryou to feel completely sure about your decisionand happy with how you have been treated duringthe pre-trip process, since you will probablybe treated in a similar fashion upon arrival. Myexperience with patients has taught me that trust

is a key factor, especially when some patientsarent familiar with the destination city, in mycase Buenos Aires. That is why learning aboutthe place youll be traveling to is vital beforemaking a nal decision. In the tourism section ofthis book you will nd extensive information onthe cities that offer low priced plastic surgery, soyou can base your decision not only on the priceof the procedures, but also on the benets eachdestination has to offer. Big cities, sandy beachessmall tows in Eastern Europe, they all offer

different attractions t for all tastes. Dont discarda destination because of the airfare price; themoney youll save on surgery will probably makeyour trip worthwhile! Ask as much questions asyou feel, the person on the other line should knowthe answer to all of them, and if they dont, theyshould be asking the doctor or person in chargeIf you can speak to a doctor personally, youll beable to get direct answers. Nevertheless, somedoctors dont speak English, so youll have to deal

    with the patient assessors.

In the following chapters, youll be able tounderstand the main advantages of medicaltourism, and why so many people are doing it!

    What is plastic surgery?

Plastic or aesthetic surgery is known as the medicalspecialty or group of surgical interventions which

modify the outer appearance of the humanbody, from the hairs on our heads to the tips ofour toes. Plastic surgery is often also known aselective surgery, because frequently there is nodiagnosed medical need for an intervention, butthe patient him or herself chooses to go throughwith the procedure, with the avail of the surgeon. There are some occasions in which plastic surgery

is mandatory, such as in cases of third degreeburns or car accidents, where reconstruction ofcertain aesthetic features must be carried out forthe basic psychological well-being of the patient.Nevertheless, 99% of plastic surgery proceduresare elective: they are carried out because the patientdesires to change his or her appearance in a specicmanner, in order to correct certain physical awsor disconformities that have become a bother.

Why has plastic surgery become sopopular?

In the last decade, plastic surgery has become morepopular and accepted than ever before, rising anastonishing 700% in the U.S. The reasons? One ofthe main factors is the acceptance it has achieved, not only in the States, but around the world. Moreand more people have realized that plastic surgerycarried out with a good surgeon, done in a proper

environment, under certain medical standardsand with a proper follow up after the procedureis not dangerous at all. People who have friendsor relatives who underwent plastic surgery, orturn on the TV and see the most popular moviestars with a beautiful new nose have begun todeposit more and more trust and condence in

the specialty. Through word of mouth and in viewof real results, people from all social and ethnicalorigins have come to know about the basics ofplastic surgery and its benets.

The numbers speak for themselves. In GreatBritain during 2005, more than 22,000 plasticprocedures were carried out by members of the

British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons(BAAPS). This gure represents a 35% increase inrelation to 2004. Women account for 89% of the totalprocedures carried out in the United KingdomAlthough the most popular procedures are breastaugmentations in women and rhinoplasties (nosecorrection) in men, anti-ageing procedures haveshown an impressive rise, showing an increaseof 42% (face lifts), 50% (eyelid surgery) and 35%(brow lifts).

The growing demand for plastic procedures hasnot gone unknown to the scientic communityThe interest people around the world have shownfor the specialty has lead to more investigationand further development of newer techniques, such as the feather lift or improved forms ofliposuction. It has also made doctors conscious ofthe importance of the assessment offered towardsthe patient before the procedure, which has leadto many professionals getting their own websites

to promote and explain their services.

Nevertheless, and most interesting of all, thegrowing popularity of plastic surgery has spawneda unique phenomenon: medical tourism.

    What is medical tourism?

Imagine traveling to another country, maybe a placeyouve only heard of on TV and absolutely know

nothing about, to get plastic surgery done. Soundstrange? It might, but thousands of Americans aredoing it and the numbers are growing day by dayNot just Americans, but people from EnglandCanada, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, andother places around the world are seeking surgeryabroad. What are the reasons?

    1. Better Prices

Strong currencies like the American dollar, theBritish pound or the Japanese yen are worth alot in other countries. What does this mean? InArgentina, for example, you can eat a full meal ata good restaurant for 3-6 US dollars, a ticket to themovies can cost from 3-5 US dollars and the new

Coldplay CD might go out for just 9 US dollars. The same products, the same quality, for lessmoney than in the States or the UK. How muchdoes a Big Mac in New York cost? In Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, youll get one for justUSD 1.50, while in the U.S. or England it is doublethat price: the same food, the same internationalstandards, different prices!

Just as food, general services, and consumer

products are less expensive than in other places,so are medical services. This does not mean thatthe quality of what you are getting is inferior; itsimply means that money has a different valuefor most things, since incomes are different andfunction on a different scale. Of course, when itcomes to getting a new notebook the prices willnot vary much, since products which are importedcannot be sold for less than what they have beenpaid for abroad. But when it comes to plasticsurgery, the difference in prices is astonishing. The

average prices for each plastic procedure will beanalyzed and compared further on. Nevertheless,it is important to underline that professionalsabroad are not necessarily under trained or lessexperienced than in the United States or the UK just because their fees are lower. Many patientswho travel abroad are pleasantly surprised whenthey discover the attention and care they receivefrom non-American professionals is just as good,or even better, than the one received in the States, and the results from the surgery are better thanwhat they expected.

    2. New Experiences

Have you ever been abroad? Are you familiar witha culture different from your own? Getting plasticsurgery abroad will not only save you money, itwill also give you the chance to get to know a newcountry while you improve your image. Walk

through the streets of the cosmopolitan BuenosAires, wander through some old fashioned

city in Eastern Europeor lie on the beaches ofTunisia, and fulll yourgoal of improving yourappearance at the sametime! Many medica

tourists couldnt believethe bars of Buenos Aires, the mix between the newand the old of the upscaleneighborhoods, the sunsetat France Square, or thebeautiful women whowalk the streets. It shouldnot be surprising that aftergetting surgery abroad

many patients return for additional proceduresafter a few months, or just to visit!

    3. Quality and service

The good prices and the attractive destinations are,of course, not enough for the most demanding. Afullling and safe experience is what most medicatourists are after. That is why many clinics aimedtowards patients coming from abroad offerservices of only the highest standards. The clinics

oriented towards the traveler will pick you up atthe airport, book your hotel for you, accompanyyou to all your medical appointments and offer apersonal translator and assistant. All of this backedup by a team of highly experienced and recognizedsurgeons, to ensure the best results possible. Youwill travel abroad, but knowing that the essentiadetails of your stay have been taken care of: youllhave a place to stay, means for getting around, anEnglish speaking person to evacuate any doubtswith, and the best professionals available. In thenext section, the most attractive medical tourismoffers will be analyzed. But rst, why can I tell youwhats best?

    Face Procedures

    Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

    Average stay required: 7 days

The blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgeryor eye lift, consists in the removal of the fat padsaround the eyes, which accumulate fat withtime, as well as the removal of excess skin andmuscle in that area. The intervention contributesto giving the patient a more rejuvenated look byeliminating the tired look caused by excessivelypuffy eyelids. An upper or lower blepharoplasty

can be done, although a combination of the twois usually carried out. The procedure is ideal foreliminating the lumpy fat bags that appear underthe lower eyelids with age. It also improves sight, since it lifts the upper eyelids.

The surgeon makes tiny incisions along thenatural folds of the eyelids in order to avoidvisible scarring. Working through these incisionsthe surgeon eliminates the three lumps of fat that

accumulate in the lower eyelids, and the twolumps which accumulate in the upper eyelidsHe also removes the small fraction of extra skinthere might be, in order to correct drooping. Theprocedure is done on both eyes in order to obtainsymmetrical results.

The procedure has a duration of one to threehours, accordingto the complexity

of the case, and iscarried out withlocal anesthesiaand sedation. Thenal results willbe visible afteronly two to sixweeks, and thescars will becomeinvisible aftera few months

The relaxed andyouthful lookyou will obtain ispriceless.

    Brow lift

    Average stay required: 7 days

This simple procedure is carried out to changethe negative inuence the angle of the eyebrowsmight give to the general facial expression of thepatient. When eyebrows are too low or straight, they may give the face an angry, tired, or sad lookwhich the patient might not be comfortable withThe intervention enhances the position and angleof the eyebrows and removes wrinkles from theforehead.

The traditional technique is the coronal brow lift.It has the deepest and most long lasting results. An incision from ear to ear across the upper partof the head is carried out, which will later becovered by the hairline. The scalp and foreheadskin is separated from the bone of the skull, whichenables the surgeon to work independently oneach muscle and perform a very meticulous

job. The surgeon can give each muscle the exactamount of tension in order to give the arch of theeyebrow the ideal look.

The brow lift is a short procedure, demanding60 to 90 minutes of surgery, although generally

requiring a nights stay at the hospital. It is donewith local anesthesia and sedation, althoughgeneral anesthesia can be used in certain cases. The operation will give your face a more refreshedand pleasant look. One of the most cost-effectiveprocedures available.

    Canthopexy

    Average stay required: 7 days

Canthopexy is a procedure which raises the cornersof the eyelids in patients who consider their eyesare too round-shaped and prefers a more almond-shaped look. It is also indicated for tighteningthe lower eyelids. It eliminates the tired or sadfeatures by elevating the sagging external cornersof the eyes, and is generally combined with theblepharoplasty since it shares the same incisions.

The surgeon works on the canthal tendon, which

supports the edge of the lower eyelid, tighteningand xing it to the membrane that covers theorbital rim or periosteum. If there is excess skinnear the corner of the eye, the surgeon is able toremove it and join the two ends in order to tightenit further.

This short procedure usually lasts about an hour, and is carried out using local anesthesia andsedation. There is no need for hospitalization. The

results of a more refreshed look are permanentand will be denitive after only two to six weeks. The scars will be invisible after a few months.

    Cheek implant

    Average stay required: 8 days

The cheek implant procedure is carried out toenhance the appearance of the cheeks. Prominentcheekbones are usually considered esthetical andbeautiful, since they may give more character to theface in some cases. With silicone cheek implants, amore harmonious look can be achieved.

The surgeon creates an internal pocket in front orbelow each cheek bone, and inserts the implantsFour kinds of incisions can be made to introducethe implants: intraoral (inside the mouth),palpebral (below the eyelids), preauricular (nearthe ear), and transconjunctival (inside the lower

eyelids). The incision used depends on each caseand is decided by the surgeon.

The surgery itself is short, lasting between 30 and60 minutes. Local anesthesia and sedation is usedand there is no need for hospitalization. The resultsfrom the procedure are permanent but reversiblesince the implants can be removed in the future orif you are not happy with the outcome. The mainadvantage is that the implants will give your face

    1. The procedure.

First of all, you must decide what proceduresare right for you, which ones will benet youthe most. Dont rush to take this rst step, manypeople make the mistake of seeing an ad onTV, Internet or a magazine and hastily make animportant decision, as if they were simply buyingan MP3 player or a microwave. This is your bodyand your health which is at stake. Dont hesitateto consult as many professionals as you requirein order make a decision in regards to which

procedure will suit you the most. Most peoplegenerally consult several clinics at a time, whichis a good idea, since you will be able to get severalprofessional opinions and perspectives. Are yousure plastic surgery is for you? If you are havingdoubts, it is always best to take your time on things.Dont hesitate to consult with a psychologist ifyou are not sure about your decision, and talkto your family about it: they know you best andwill be able to give you a valuable opinion. Whendealing with clinics, always send in your photos

(see second step below), since that will givedoctors the chance to give you a pretty accuratediagnosis, even before traveling. Be sure to learnabout the procedure and how its done, as wellas its post-operative follow-up and recovery, soyou dont receive any unexpected surprises afterthe procedure. The information included in thisguide in regards to the procedures is meant forgeneral orientation. We strongly recommend, onceyouve decided on what procedure you need, toinquire with a professional on the details of theintervention. It is also important for you to knowhow long the recovery will be, since that willestablish the amount of time youll have to stayabroad. The days we recommend are based onstandards recommended by expert professionals inBuenos Aires, Argentina. However, the surgeriescan be carried out safely in less time, so dont besurprised if you get different stay requirementsfrom different doctors. Consult each clinic onthe recovery times for the procedures, since

they do tend to vary. Always keep in mind thatthe procedures you have made your mind upon

might change once you arrive. It is not uncommonfor surgeons to recommend one interventionand after seeing the patient in person, advise adifferent approach. Even though deciding on theprocedures you will be having is important, dontdespair if once you arrive the surgeon advisesdifferently: this is just due to the fact that medicineis not an exact science.

    2. Sending in pictures.

Although some patients can be skeptical, itis essential, and should be requested by theclinic, for you to send in pictures of yourself forthe surgeons in charge to analyze. With yourphotos, the surgeon will be able to conrm if theprocedure/s you think you need is right for you,and if it can be done successfully or if there areany risks involved. Dont feel embarrassed aboutsending in your photos, once you get the Doctorsresponse youll probably gain condence and

will feel more secure about your decision. Youllalso be able to conrm, usually without charge(except for a clinic in Germany), if the surgeriesyou have in mind will really benet you; you wilget a professional diagnosis, having saved onthe cost of consulting a doctor in the States. Thephotos should be taken with plenty of light, fromvarious angles, usually front, left and right proleand back, for face and body procedures. For faceprocedures, pictures from above and below willbe useful, especially for rhinoplasties. The moredetailed the photos, the better the specialists willbe able to determine what procedures will benetyou and what the results will be like.

Tijuca Forest National Park, overlooking the city.

As well as being a potent symbol of Christianity,

the statue has become an icon of the city, its open

arms seen by many as a testament to the warmth of

    the Brazilian people.

The statue can be accessed by road or by the

Corcovado Rack Railway. Until recently, the statue

could only be reached from the train terminal

via a large 222-step stairway, a huge hurdle forhandicapped or elderly visitors. However, in 2002,

the monument went through a large renovation

process, and 3 panoramic elevators and 4 escalators

    were installed.

Sugar Loaf - Po de Aucar

Sugarloaf Mountain (in Portuguese, Po de

    Acar) location 225656.7S 43927W, is

a peak situated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from

the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula thatsticks out into the Atlantic Ocean. Rising 396

meters (1,300 ft) above sea-level, its name is said

to refer to its resemblance to the traditional shape

    of concentrated rened loaf sugar.

The mountain is only one of half a dozen

monolithic morros of granite and quartz that

rise straight from the waters edge around Rio

de Janeiro. A glass-paneled cablecar (in popular

Portuguese, bondinho - more properly called

telefrico), capable of holding 75 passengers, runs

along a 1400-metre route between the peaks of

Babilnia and Urca every half hour. The original

cablecar line was built in 1912. So familiar is this

peak, the mere sight of it in a lm is sufcient to

    establish the setting as Rio.

    Copacabana

Copacabana is a district located in the southern

zone of the city Rio de Janeiro, famous for its 4

    km beach.

The district was originally called Sacopenap

until the mid-18th century. It was renamed afterthe construction of a chapel holding a replica of the

Virgin of Copacabana, Bolivia. It was incorporated

into the city on July 6, 1892.

Copacabana starts at the beginning of the

Princesa Isabel Avenue, and ends at Posto Seis

(lifeguard watchtower six) near the Forte de

    Copacabana (Stronghold of Copacabana). After

Copacabana there is the small Arpoador beach

followed by the famous borough of Ipanema, and

    then the borough of Leblon

The Copacabana beaches have been host to

record setting concerts, including a concert played

by Rod Stewart in 1994 that attracted more than 3

million Brazilians. Other bands that have played

on the beaches here to multi-million strong crowds

include The Rolling Stones and Rush.

    Ipanema

Ipanema is adjacent to Copacabana beach but

is very distinctive. The private infrastructure

has created world class restaurants, cafes and

shopping. Ipanema is one of the most expensive

places to live in Rio. At the forefront of beach

culture are the many surfers and sun worshipers

who socialize daily at the beach.

Families often have domestic maids who cook,

clean, and perform basic chores such as grocery

    shopping. Most apartment residencies have

doormen who when tipped will wash your car,

take out trash and even walk the dog.

The beach in Ipanema is world-renowned.Populated with tiny-bikini clad bodies and many

rich Brazilian youths, the beach is a symbol of

pleasure and wealth. Two rocks called the Two

Brothers rise at the western end of the beach

After a late morning visit to the beach, Ipanema

girls walk through the city in swimwear and wraps

known as cangas. There are always circles of

people playing football, volleyball, and footvolley,

a combination sport originating in Brazil

Ipanema is generally regarded as the safest

    district of the Zona Sul

    Carnival

The carnival in Rio de Janeiro has many choices,

including the famous Escolas de Samba (Samba

schools) parades in the sambdromo exhibition

centre and the popular blocos de carnaval, which

parade in almost every corner of the city.

The most famous ones are the following:

Cordo do Bola Preta: Parades in the centre of

the city. It is one of the most traditional carnivals

In 2006, it gathered 200,000 people in one day.

Suvaco do Cristo: Band that parades in the

Botanic Garden, directly below the Redeemerstatues arm. The name, in English, translates as

Christs armpit, and was chosen for that reason.

Carmelitas: Band that was supposedly created

by nuns, but in fact it is just a theme chosen by the

band. It parades in the hills of Santa Teresa, which

    have very nice views.

Simpatia Quase Amor: One of the most popular

parades in Ipanema. Translates as Friendliness isalmost love.

Banda de Ipanema: The most traditional in

Ipanema. It attracts families as well as gays and

    drag queens.

Not only people from all over Brazil, but from

all parts of the world come to Rio to take part and

witness the extravaganza. The Carnival comes

with a lot of music, good food, color and of course

the Samba dance. The celebration of Carnival endson Mardi Gras.

Apart from the Carnival, New Year is also a

big deal in Rio and is also one of the other major

    festivals.

of the four biggest football clubs in Rio: Flamengo,

    Botafogo and Fluminense.

The stadium, built for the 1950 FIFA World Cup,

originally had a capacity of 200,000. However, its

capacity was greatly reduced when it was converted

to an all-seater in the 1990s; it can currently hold

around 77,720 seated and 103,022 with standing

room. It is now undergoing renovations that will

increase its all-seated capacity to around 100,000.

    Portugal as

    a temporary

    repository

    for imported

    plants, where

    they could

become acclimatized to the tropics. The gardens

were opened to the public by his son D. Pedro I in

1821, and about 600,000 people visit every year.

More than 7000 plant species grow on the 140

hectare of this wonderful park. The avenue with

majestic king palms makes great visual impact

From Copacabana or Ipanema you best hire a taxi

to the park. Taking the bus is circumstantial.

    Tijuca Forest

The Tijuca Forest (Floresta da Tijuca in

    Portuguese) is a mountainous hand-planted

rainforest in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It

is the worlds largest urban forest, covering some

    32 km.

The Tijuca Forest is home to hundreds of

species of plants and wildlife, many threatened by

extinction, found only in the Atlantic Rainforest

(Mata Atlntica in Portuguese). After all the

original forest had been destroyed to make wayfor coffee farms, Tijuca was replanted by Major

Manuel Gomes Archer in the second half of the

19th century, in a successful effort to protect Rios

    water supply.

Tijuca Forest, the green spine of Rio, also

contains the colossal sculpture of Christ the

Redeemer on Corcovado, with the stretch of road

closed to vehicular trafc leading to it, called

Paineiras; the Cascatinha Waterfall; the Mayrink

Chapel with murals painted by Cndido Portinari

the light pagoda-style gazebo at Vista Chinesa

    Overview

So Paulo (Portuguese for Saint Paul) isthe capital of the state of So Paulo in

southeastern Brazil. It is located 400 km

(250 miles) from Rio de Janeiro, and 1,030 km

(640 miles) from federal capital Braslia.

The city has an area of 1,523.0 square kilometres

(588.0 sq. miles) and a population of approximately

10.9 million, which makes it the largest and most

populous city in the Southern Hemisphere and a

    global city.

19 million people live in the greater So Paulo

metropolitan area as dened by the government

(Regio Metropolitana) making it one of the

ve most populous in the world.

People from the city of So Paulo are called

    paulistanos, while paulista designates anyone

from the whole of So Paulo state, including the

paulistanos. The citys motto is Non ducor, duco,

which is Latin for I am not led, I lead.

So Paulo is a major business centre. The city

has a multicultural metropolitan area, with heavy

Italian, Spaniard, Portuguese, German, Arab and

    Japanese inuences.

Though thought of as drizzly and rather cool by

some Brazilians, So Paulos climate is by world

standards actually warm and mild. The temperature

ranges are comparable to such cities as Los Angeles

and Mexico City, which are renowned for their

    pleasant climate. Summer temperatures seldom

reach 30C (86F), and frost is extremely rare

    All-time record temperatures are 38C (100F)

and -2C (28F),. Rainfall is abundant, especiallyin the warmer months. Snow was register one time

in 1918, tropical cyclones, while tornadic activity

    is uncommon.

    Terrao Italia restaurant

in its 44th oor. It also

    has a rooftop observation

appearance of the building is modeled on New

Yorks Empire State Building. Soon after its

completion in the 1940s, it was named the worlds

    largest structure of armed concrete.

The Banespa Tower is one of the best-known

skyscrapers of Sao Paulo. In the highest point of

the building, accessible from 34th oor by stairs,

there is an observation deck with views of up to 40

km. One can see there other important landmarksof the city, such as the Municipal Market, the S

Cathedral, the Edifcio Italia which took its place

as the citys highest building, and beyond into

    diverse neighboring quarters

    Festival for Electronic Art

    Every two years, Associao Cultural

    Videobrasils International Electronic Art Festival

brings groundbreaking work by cream-of-the-crop artists from all over the world to So Paulo.

In keeping with the constant transformations in

media and support, the curatorship has added

    installations, performances, VJs, CD-ROM art,

and internet art to the programme.

    The Festival includes a

    competitive exhibition of so-

    called southern circuit and an

    extensive parallel programme.

    Art shows, debates and

meetings introduce new ideasand art work, setting new

    guidelines for contemporary

    art in Brazil.

    Exhibitions featuring work

    by prominent electronic artists

are also part of the Festival.

Brazilian pioneers such as Rafael Frana and

Olhar Eletrnico, and international guests such

as Nam June Paik, Bill Viola and Gary Hill, have

featured in the events past editions. Each edition

has a theme of its own.

    So Paulo Art Biennial

The So Paulo Art Biennial is a cultural event

hosted every two years. Almost 1 million people

visited the 26th Bienal in 2004.

Its theme was chosen to enable a wide range of

artistic positions to feel comfortable. The concept

of Free Territory involved various dimensions:

    it had a physical-geographical, a socio-political

as well as an aesthetic dimension the latter, of

course, being of greatest interest in the context of

    this exhibition.

In order to emphasise the thematic unity of the

overall exhibition, the invited artists and those

representing the countries are mixed together on

the 25,000 square metres of the spacious Oscar

Niemeyer Pavilion. Despite the complexity oindividual voices, the end result was intended to

    be a unity.

In addition to an intensication of the North-

South dialogue inside Brazil, the Bienals

aims include the promoting of links between

    non-European cultures along a South-South

    orientation.

    So Paulo Fashion Week

It seems that Brazil has nally entered the world

of fashion with the increasing reputation of famous

Brazilian top models such as Adriana Lima, Gisele

Bndchen, Fernanda Tavares, Ana Beatriz Barros

and Ana Hickmann, and the discovery of some

fresh talents such as Alexandre Herchcovitch

by some international fashion magazines. As

    consequence

    of this, So

    Paulo Fashion

Week is the place to see

    and to be seen

    in Brazilian

    fashion

    scene, always

    attracting a

    number of

    international

    fashion

editors and models. Nowadays, So Paulo Fashion

Week is one of the most relevant fashion events in

Brazil. It takes place twice a year at the building of

    Bienal de So Paulo.

    So Paulo Gay Parade

Also a major event in the city, the So Paulo

Gay Parade has brought to Avenida Paulista about

3 million people in 2006, according to ofcial

statistics. It is usually opened by the citys mayor

A huge carnival goes all the way through the centre

of the city. The last parade was held on June 17,

    2006.

    March For Jesus

The March for Jesus is a Christian parade in

Avenida Paulista, in 2005 about 3 million people

had participated of this event. The rst March for

Jesus happened in 1987 in the city of London, and

was established by the partor Roger Forster, and

by the singer and composer Graham Kendrick.

In 1998, more than 10 million people in more

than 170 nations, congregating Christian of all

the religions, age and races, had 1998 marched to

    celebrate Jesus.

    Brazilian Grand Prix

    The Brazilian Grand

    Prix is a Formula One

    championship race

    which occurs at the

    Autdromo Jos Carlos

    Pace in Interlagos.

    In 2005, for the rst

    time, the Brazilian

    GP decided the World

    Championship, won by

    Fernando Alonso.

    Parque do Ibirapuera

Parque Ibirapuera is the largest park in the

middle of the city. It is much like the Central

Park of Sao Paulo. The Pavilho da Bienal in the

center of the park offers art exhibitions, bands and

a small branch of Museu de Arte Contempornea.

    Parque Estadual da Cantareira

Come here if you want to see one of the remaining

patches of the Atlantic rainforest that once covered

the state of So Paulo. Only parts of the Parque

Estadual da Cantareira are open to the public, and

one such part, the Ncleo Pedra Grande (open on

    weekends and public

    holidays), is behind

    the Horto Florestal, a

    large public park on the

    outskirts of the city.

    The only problem

    is getting here, a 40-

    minute car ride from

Avenida Paulista. Thebest way is to persuade

    a local friend with a

    car to accompany you.

If you take a taxi, ask

the driver to stay; otherwise, you will have to walk

a fair way into town to nd one for your trip back

There are various trails through the forest

Lucky visitors will spot troupes of monkeys

swinging in the trees. The longest trail is 9.5km up

an asphalt track (which somewhat detracts from

the forest experience) to Pedra Grande, a big rockfrom which you can get a panoramic view of the

    city. It is worth it.

    Praca Liberdade

Every weekend 10-7, this plaza hosts a sprawling

Asian food and crafts fair that exhibits So Paulos

    eclectic cultural mix. You

    may see, for example,

    Afro-Brazilians dressedin colorful kimonos

    hawking grilled shrimp on

    a stick. Several religious

    celebrations are held here,

    like Aprils Hanamatsuri,

    commemorating the birth

    of the Buddha.

    special events, the only
