ABOUTTHEAUTHOR

AsayoungmangrowingupinruralSouthCarolina,BobbyBrantondevelopedapassion for knives that has stayed with him throughout his adult life. In hisyounger years, knives were tools used for skinning game, filleting fish, andthrowing as a means of entertainment. Then in 1983, edged weapons took adifferentperspectiveinBranton’slifewhenhediscoveredsomecustomknivesina local shop. He was amazed at the beauty and craftsmanship of thesehandcraftedblades and startedhis own collection. His interest grew so readilythat he read every book he could locate on the subject and decided to try hishandatknifemaking.

After constant reading, research, and collecting of knives, Brantonreconstructed his shop in order to create these treasured handcrafted knives.Throughhisresearchhediscoveredonecommonfactor,amannamedGeorgeHerron.Hewas amaster craftsmanwhohada seven-yearwait forhis customknives.Mr.HerronsoonbefriendedBrantonandaclosebondformedbetweenthe two craftsman. Branton purchased knives from him while gaining muchadviceandvaluablepointers.

Brantonmakes his working knives by the “Stock RemovalMethod” and byhandforgingvariousmetals.HisstylehasobviouslybeeninfluencedbyGeorgeHerron and Walter Brend along with forging techniques from well-knownMasterBladesmith,JamesCrowell.

Another turning point in his career was when Brantonmet knife-throwinglegendsPaulLaCrossandKennethPierce (CheCheWhitecloud).LaCrosswasbilled as “TheWorld’sForemostKnife,Axe, andTomahawkThrower”. ItwasPaulwho taught andmotivatedBranton toput together a throwing exhibitionwhichheperformsthroughouttheSoutheast.

LaCross retired in 1990 due to health reasons and passed away in 1992. In1996withthehelpofStephenMcEvoy,KennethPierceandhiswifeNancy,anda few close friends, Branton was instrumental in reorganizing the AmericanKnife Throwers Alliance and held what has been arguably the first knife-andtomahawk-throwing-onlycontestinovertwentyyears.

HISTORY

PIONEERSOFKNIFETHROWING

As a young boy growing up next tomy uncle’smeat processing plant, I havebeen exposed to knives nearly all of my life. I hung around and eventuallyworkedinthatmeatprocessingplantduringgradeschoolandmostofmyhighschool years. I was fascinated with almost any type of knife and one of myearliestmemoriesofknifethrowingwaswatchingactorEdAmesontheJohnnyCarson Show. Ames’s claim to fame at the time was for his role as Mingo, aCherokeetribesmanontheTVseriesDanielBoone.Duringtheinterview,Amesclaimedthathecouldhitatargetfromacrosstheroom,andCarsonaskedAmesifhecoulddemonstratethisskill.Amesagreed,andawoodpanelwithachalkoutlineofacowboywasbroughtontothestage.Amesproceededtothrowthetomahawk,whichhitthe“cowboy”squareinthegroinwiththehandlepointingupward.Thisledtoaverylongburstoflaughterfromtheaudience.WheneverIamtravelingaroundthecountrydoingseminarsordemonstrations,withoutfail,someonewillalwaysaskmeifIsawthatclipontelevision.

In thecircus world, the success of large-scale tented touring shows pioneered inAmerica led to the introductionofmore actsof skill anddaringaswell as theinclusion of sideshows, in which impalement acts sometimes were featured.Among themost significant events were the Barnum& Bailey circus tours ofEurope from 1897 to 1902, which made a huge impact on European circusowners and led them to adopt similar formats.Aswell asproviding a friendlystagewhereimpalementactscouldrelyonfindinganaudience, thecircuswasacompetitiveenvironmentinwhichshowsandperformerssoughttooutdoeachotherand socreated incentives todevelopnewstunts.Moving targetswereaninnovationusedbyEuropeanartistsinthe1930s.Anotableexampleisthewheelof death, which is believed to have been introduced into theUnited States in1938bytheGibsons,fromGermany.

First of all, I like to tell beginners that you need three things in a qualitythrowingknife.

Youneed lengthforcontrol; itwillhelp if it iscenter-balanced,anditneedsweight forpenetration.Agood ruleof thumb is touse the formula createdbyknife-throwinglegend,HarryK.McEvoy.

Harry felt that a knife shouldweigh approximately 1–1¼ ounces for everyinchinlength.Aknifethatisatleast12inchesinlengthwillbeeasiertocontrolbecausethelengthwithmakeitturnoveralittleslowerandthelengthwillaidyouinachievingabettergrip.

A center-balanced knife will be more stable in flight and will allow you tothrow the knife by either the handle or blade. A knife made with the aboveMcEvoy formulawillhave sufficientweight forpenetrationwhich is crucial tobeingabletopenetrateatarget.

Feet together—The thrower places both feet on the distance mark at acomfortabledistanceaparttodeliverthethrow.Thisisanawkwardvariationformostwhotrythisstyle.

Lift rear foot/strong follow-through—This is the same motion as theProfessional Style except the thrower extends the follow-through to the pointwheretheentirebodyweightisshiftedtotheforwardleftfootandtherearrightfoot leaves the ground. The throw is delivered atmaximum speed and power. This variation is very much like the windup, stretch, and delivery of theprofessional baseball pitcher’s fastball. It allows the thrower to use maximumforwardbodymotiontoaddtothevelocityofthethrow,thusproducingamuchgreaterimpactforce.Itisworthmentioningthatusinggreaterforceandhighervelocitythrowsusuallydonotproducegreateraccuracy.

Reversed footing—With this stance the right foot is placed forward on thedistance mark with the left foot a comfortable distance behind. This is anawkwardandunnatural stance to throw from, buta few individualshaveusedandwonmajorcompetitionswiththisform.

THEBASICSOFTHROWINGATOMAHAWK

The feel and flight characteristics of the tomahawk are the most notable andconsiderabledifferences fromthatof theknife.Thedesignof the tomahawk isinherentlyheavyattheendofthehead.Thismakesforaseeminglyawkwardfeelwhen throwing as compared to the relatively center-balanced knife. Most

throwersrapidlybecomefamiliarwiththisweightandsizedifferenceandadjustaccordingly.

Theweight of the tomahawk is both an advantage and a disadvantage. Thedisadvantageofthegreaterweightisthatitmustbecarriedifusedasacampingtool as well as a thrower. Gratefully, as competitors, we do not carry ourimplementsonourbodiesoverlongdistancesorperiodsoftime, butinsteadsetthemdownbetweenroundsofthrowing.Theadvantageofthegreaterweightisthat the tomahawk has greater impact force and therefore does not require astrong throw. The weight of the tomahawk does most of the work for thethrower, leavingonlydistanceandaccuracytobeconcernedwith.

To achieve full-turn throws, the tomahawk’s blade edge must be facingforwardtowardthetarget.Paceoutsixnormalstepsfromthetargetandfaceit.This should put you at 14 to 16 feet from the target for one turn. Throw thetomahawkusingthemotionsdescribedintheHowtoThrowaKnifesection, butuse more of a downward chopping motion for the lunge/throw. Observe theposition of the handle of the stuck tomahawk. If the handle hits first and thetomahawkbouncesoff the target, is touching the target, ornearlyparallelwiththetarget, stepbacksixinchesandtryagain.Ifthehandleisperpendicularwiththetargetorthetomahawkhitsheadfirstandbouncesoffthetarget, stepforwardsix inches and try again. Continue to adjust the distance until you get aconsistent stick with the handle pointing down at 45 degrees. This is theoptimumstickposition.

To achieve half-turn throws, the tomahawk’s blade edge must be facingrearwardtowardyourface.Paceoutsixnormalstepsfromthetarget,addthreemorestepsforthehalf-turn,andfacethetarget.Thisshouldputyouat18to22feet from the target for a one-and-a-half turn throw. Throw and adjust asdescribed above until you get an optimum stick position with the handlepointingupat45degrees.

Therearesomestyleandgripvariationswithinthemodernno-spinstyle,butone thing the new styles all have in common is a certain grip that is differentfrom the conventional knife-throwing grip. Bobby Branton has a deep and rich historywithHarryK.McEvoy and theTru-BalanceKnifeCompany.BackwhenBobbyhadbegun tomakeknives, hewas searching for information on what made a quality throwing knife. Hestumbled upon Harry McEvoy, owner of the Tru-Balance Knife Company ofGrandRapidsMichigan.ThetwobecamefriendsandHarrymentoredBobbyonhis formula for what made a quality throwing knife. Bobby was told that Stephen would be carrying on the familybusiness of making throwing knives. Whenmakinghighquality throwingknives, Ihave always found that a springsteelsuchas5160or1050tobethebestforthejob.Whenheat-treatedproperlybothsteelswillmakeanexcellentthrowingknifethatwillwithstandtherigorsofthrowing for years to come. The 1050 spring steel usually comes cold-rolled and available inannealedortemperedcondition.

DESIGN

Eventhoughthrowingknivesappeartobeverybasicindesign, thereareafewcrucial elements that we want to incorporate into the design. My personalopinion is thatyouneedat least threeof the followingqualities fora first-rate,professionalgradethrowingknife.

HANDLES

Over the years, I have only used three types of handle material for throwingknives.Ihaveusedleather,vulcanizedfiber,andG-10.

Vulcanized fiber is a laminated plastic composed of only cellulose. Thematerialisatough, resilientmaterialthatislighterthanaluminum, tougherthanleather, andstifferthanmostthermoplastics.
