There’s no ‘miracle cure’for cellulite – and if youhave it, you’re in good

company! – but there are lotsof techniques that you can use to help to reduce itsappearance.

Cellulite is caused by fatcells which are trapped withinfibres of supporting tissuesthat are thought to havebecome inflexible due to poorsupplies of blood and oxygen, resulting in the ‘orange peel’appearance we are all so

influence it significantly. Toxins in the body can causerestrictions in blood supply and this is thought to worsencellulite. Stay away fromcigarettes, alcohol andprocessed foods if you want to improve the appearance ofyour skin generally, and withcellulite salt intake is also afactor as it often causes fluidretention and bloating. Flushtoxins out of your system withplenty of fluid every day, preferably filtered or bottled

So it’s safe to say thatcellulite is not limited to thosewho are overweight… it canbe a problem whatever yoursize. However, what you eat, drink and smoke may

stay active. Toning exercisessuch as lunges and squats willalso help to improve theappearance of your legs andbuttocks. Body brushing improves

circulation and stimulates thelymphatic system – do it everymorning for a great start to the day! For this you need anatural bristle brush and youuse it all over the body, excluding delicate skin such asthe face. Always work towardsthe heart in long firm strokes,

and do this on dry skin, with adry brush. While body brushing is a

EmbracingdiversityWe’ve just checked out Vogue Italia’s latest issue, in whichwe’re happy to see some of the world’s top black models.

Vogue Italia’s ‘Black Allure’ spread sees top blackmodels – Ajak Deng, Chanel Iman, Arlenis Sosa Pena,Jourdan Dunn, Melodie Monrose, Lais Ribeiro, RoseCordero, Mia Aminata Niaria, Sessilee Lopez, JoanSmalls and Georgie Baddiel – all looking stunning in anEmma Summerton shoot.

We love the opportunity to celebrate occasions whendiversity is embraced; after all, our agency has a hugelydiverse range of models on its books.

But it’s got us thinking, is this shoot an attempt todiversify the representation of models in Vogue? Or is itjust a great shoot using great models?

Vogue Italia Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani wroteabout whether colour is still an issue in fashion on herblog last week.

Sozzani said: “There isn’t a problem and it’s not aproblem in fashion either. There is no discrimination.I’ve explained many times this argument in my posts, in December for example when the Washington Postmentioned Vogue and Vogue.it as a publication thatcares for black girls, and comparing the great successof Eastern models to the lack of black models in theindustry. Prejudice? Absolutely not.”

We think that beauty embodies all colours and arehappy to see the fashion world continuing to embracediversity.

Kane: more than able

Sustainablefashion

Ever since Kane designed a capsulecollection for Topshop back in 2007,the girls at Talent Managementhave kept an eye on this Scottishtalent. We loved Kane for his signature sexy style, stunning useof embellishments, and tight silhouettes.

Well since then, he’s come a longway – he designed the VersaceVersus collection with Donatella, collaborated with Catwalk by TIGI,and has now won this year’sBFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, which as well as £200,000, comeswith fashion business mentoringfrom industry big shots.

“The BFC/Vogue DesignerFashion Fund is focused on celebrating talents that have thepotential to be successful Britishbrands of the future,” BFC Chairman

H&M’s ‘ConsciousCollection’, a sustainablefashion line made fromgreener fabrics includingorganic cotton, launchesin April.

Ever since Mariah Carey's husband Nick Cannon revealed that they werehaving twins on his radio show back in December last year, we have beenwondering whether they’d be having two boys or two girls. But it seems noone expected they’d have one of each!

“Even before we announced it was twins, I was trying to keep everythinggender neutral because I didn’t want to impose an identity on them toosoon,” Carey is reported as saying.

The couple are thrilled to be having both a son and a daughter, who areexpected in April.

Harold Tillman, said. “The judgingpanel and funding is underpinnedby leading business men andwomen in the industry to identifythose with the potential and visionto succeed.

“All finalists presented professionalplans and although the competitionwas incredibly close, ChristopherKane’s success to date and branddevelopment proposition securedhim the prize this year.”

Vogue’s Editor AlexandraShulman added: “I am delightedthat Christopher has won. The

shortlist was very strong and wewere impressed by the level of talent which was inspiring.Christopher and Tammy haveworked immensely hard and it iswonderful to see a designer with hisvision and commitment rewarded.”

Having beaten seriously goodcompetition – including OsmanYousefzada, Richard Nicoll, PeterPilotto and Jonathan Saunders –there’s no doubt that Kane’saccomplishment is thoroughlydeserved – he’s come a long way insuch a little time!

Luscious lips make welcome returnSeason after season, muted, pale lips have dominatedbeauty trends, but now that spring is just around thecorner, bright oranges, reds and pinks make a valiantreturn to the lips of models, celebrities and the fashion-savvy team here at Models Direct.

Dubbed as one of Spring/Summer 2011’s biggestbeauty trends, we’ve spotted lusciously colouredsmackers on the catwalks of Diane von Furstenberg, Jill Sander and Marni.

As well as being bang on-trend, a bright hue instantlymakes a statement and adds vibrancy to a basic look. But be warned – to make bright lips work, be sure tokeep the rest of your make-up toned down and simple, especially when it comes to the eyes. If you feel thatyou need to balance out your face when wearing a

bright lip, then try pencilling in your brows rather thangoing for a heavy eyeshadow.

GET THE LOOK1. Begin by applying a good quality lip primer. We atModels Direct like MAC’s Prep & Prime; worn under lip-stick, it adds light moisture, smoothes and refines thelips, and improves the appearance of lip products.2. For shapely, defined and plump-looking lips, use a lipliner just outside the edge of your natural lip line andfill in. This will stop the colour from bleeding.3. Now for the lipstick. It’s important to use a quality lip-stick that won’t crease or feather. Our favourite is EsteeLauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place lipstick in Apricot. It’s silky and creamy and has 12 hours’ staying power.

Oodles of doodles – 1000celebs draw for charityOver 1,000 celebrities, including fashion’s finest SophieDahl, Ben de Lisi, Bruce Oldfield and Twiggy, have beenshowing their artistic side for charity as part of thisyear’s National Doodle Day.

The money raised from this year’s event will helpsupport people affected by epilepsy. With a theme of‘Me and My World’, celebrity doodlers were asked todraw what’s important to them, revealing interesting, but somewhat expected traits of their personality.

Oldfield, currently a Talent Management favourite todesign Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, has drawn, you’ve guessed it, a woman in a wedding gown.

While former model Sophie Dahl, who is currentlypregnant and pursuing a career as a chef, drew herselfnext to the words “Babies and biscuits”.

Dahl, who has been drawing for the charity since2006, said: “Spend money on oodles of doodles.”

Many of our modelshere at Models Directare rocking colouredhair at the moment, asare several celebritiesever since Cheryl Colekicked off the trendwith her home-dyedburgundy tresses.

If you fancy achange too and areplanning on going red

like Khloe Kardashian, brunette like Alicia Silverstone or ice-blonde like Ashlee Simpson, then you’ll need toknow how to keep your coloured locks vibrant and‘salon fresh’ for longer.

So read on for Models Direct’s top maintenance tipsfor coloured hair…

Condition: whether you’ve turned blonde, red, brownor even blue, specific colour-care shampoos and condi-tioners help maintain a juicy looking colour. One ofModels Direct’s favourites has to be Tigi Bed Head’s

Colour Combat range. Products lock in colour and fightthe arch enemies of colour fade: water, heat and UV.

Shade the sun: although any good haircare productmade for coloured hair should contain ingredients thatwill help to protect from UV rays – which not only damage hair, but discolour pigment causing colour fade – it’s important to go that extra step and wear a hat if you’re planning on being exposed to strongsunlight for a while.

Protect from the heat: it’s not just the light that cancause colour fade, but also heat. Heat degrades thecolour molecule, which causes colour fade and candamage fragile hair. To avoid this, try to blow dry yourhair on a lower heat setting or let it dry it naturally ifpossible. It may take longer, but will be worth it in theend.

Be wary of swimming: of course, swimming is greatfor your fitness, so we’re not dissuading you completely– but if you want to protect your colour, then alwayswear a swimming cap and condition your hair beforeentering the pool. This is because chlorine can cause alot of damage and colour loss to dyed hair.

Home-dye to die for!

F irst it was the highschool prom… now theUS beauty pageant has

hopped across the Atlanticand become a popularshowcase for youngsters whohave a talent for looking good!Beauty pageants can boost

self-confidence and may evenopen doors into a futurecareer in the performance, entertainment or modellingworlds. For those with a ‘can-do’ attitude they’re a great wayto counter stage fright, andalong the way they’ll help youdevelop your social skills andrecognise areas that need work. If you, or your child, are

considering joining thepageant circuit this year, thenhere’s a few tips to help. First things first. Include lots

of detail in your application, about out of school activitiesand other talents, or anyawards received. Show strongmorals and positivity alongsideany academic skills.Good grades. Good grades

will go a long way not just atpageants but in life generally! Appearance. It is essential

that contestants are wellpresented with a neat, tidyhairstyle, subtle make-up andattention to details such asmanicured hands andpedicured feet (with any

varnish in neutral colours). Some contestants ask beautyconsultants and hair stylists forhelp but this should not benecessary and can beexpensive. Instead, experimentat home to find an appropriatelook and avoid any last-minutepanic.

Confidence. Work onconfidence by practicingperformance and publicspeaking whenever theopportunity arises – in school,at clubs and even aroundfriends and family. If nerves setin, pause between sentencesand talk slowly.

trampolining, there are manyways to make keeping fit fun,so be inventive.• Get organised. Plan yourfitness activities so there’s noreason to exclude them fromyour routine. Plan at least aweek in advance so you canbook courts, organisechildcare, or take care of anyother factor that you need toconsider.• Set achievable goals. It’s

BAD HABITSAND HOW TO BEAT THEM

If you’re interested in modelling or some other talent-based career, thenthere are five everyday crimes against beauty you need to know about…and avoid at all costs.

SmokingThe chemicals found in cigarettes are highly toxic and reduce the efficiencyof your skin to regenerate. Smoking also thins and ages the skin, giving it adull appearance. Besides the obvious health risks associated with smoking, consider how often you have realised, simply by looking at a person’s face, that he or she is a smoker. It’s time to quit. Now!

Sun worshipEven during the colder months some of us will sneak off for a sun bed session because it makes us ‘feel good’ or ‘dries up spots’. Please don’t dothis to yourself! UV rays age your skin dramatically and raise your risk ofskin cancer by up to 75 per cent. There doesn’t appear to be any escapefrom the facts about sun beds, and exposure to natural UV must also bekept to a minimum, whatever the time of year.

Sleeping in make-upA common crime against beauty is going to bed with your make-up stillintact. We have all done it, but it’s not a good way to treat your face – atnight your skin needs to breathe and renew. Leaving make-up on meansthat pores will become clogged and this process can’t happen as it should.Instead you’ll encourage break-outs and miss the opportunity to allow yourskin some QT. Always remove your make-up before you sleep, just like mumsaid.

Squeezing and pickingIt can be very tempting, but squeezing spots and picking at delicate skinnot only spreads bacteria but can also leave nasty scars that could be withyou for many years to come. A basic monthly, or even bi-monthly, facialcosts less than a round of drinks and can really benefit problem skin.

Nail bitingThis habit not only leaves your poor fingers feeling sore and looking lessthan their best, it’s also extremely unhygienic. Carefully consider all thethings that you may have touched during your average day. By biting yournails you are inviting anything that your hands may have come into contactwith, into your mouth. Enough said!

Stop… beauty thief! Many of us try out beauty products and follow advice to enhance ourlooks and boost confidence, but what of the beauty ‘no-no’s’ thataren’t so often shared?

A s babies we are comfortedwith milk, and as we growolder most of us are given

sweets, biscuits and otherfoods as treats, rewards orcomfort. It’s a process thatcomes with only the best ofintentions, but it can leave uswith the feeling that food isthe answer in many situationsthat wouldn’t naturally call forit, and some of us are left witha ‘comfort eating’ habit as aresult. If you think you may bea comfort eater these tips mayhelp.

solution, but it could beanything really – a job thatneeds doing or a phone call toa friend. If you can keep thisup you will gradually form new, more positive habits to replaceunhealthy comfort eating.

Our bodies often mistakethirst for hunger, so the next

time you get the urge to eatwhen you know you shouldn’tbe hungry, try a healthy drinkinstead. Other alternatives mayinclude sugar-free chewinggum or even ice-cubes whichreportedly work well for somepeople.

One of the most simple andeffective methods of stoppingyourself from comfort eating isto avoid buying the foods thattempt you in the first place. Itmay seem like a harshapproach, but if they aren’t inthe cupboard you can’t eatthem! If you must buy thefoods that you are trying toavoid – say for other membersof the household – make surethat you have only what theyneed and not an excess oftemptation. Instead, allowyourself to eat as much plainfruit and salad as you like –when faced with three applesyou are unlikely to eat them all, whereas three bars ofchocolate may be a differentstory!

In the long term, you mustconsider what’s at the root ofyour comfort eating habit. Takenote of which circumstancesand times of the day lead youto crave for food and be readyfor it next time! If breaking thecycle is too difficult on yourown you may wish to considersome help from a therapist.

What’seatingyou?
