When we turn that gaze to migrants and refugees, we discover that they do not arrive empty-handed. They bring their courage, skills, energy and aspirations, as well as the treasures of their own cultures; and in this way, they enrich the lives of the nations that receive them. We also come to see the creativity, tenacity and spirit of sacrifice of the countless individu- als, families and communities around the world who open their doors and hearts to migrants and refugees, even where resources are scarce. A contemplative gaze should also guide the discernment of those responsible for the public good, and encourage them to pursue policies of welcome, within the limits allowed by a correct understanding of the com- mon good. Those who see things in this way will be able to recognize the seeds of peace that are already sprouting and nurture their growth. Wisdom for a New Year 2018 Yearning for a new way will not produce it. Only ending the old way can do that. You cannot hold onto the old, all the while declaring that you want something new. The old will defy the new; The old will deny the new; The old will decry the new. There is only one way to bring in the new. You must make room for it. —Neale Donald Walsch

Faith Formation News

•Jr. High Youth Rally Junior High Students will be attending the Rally at St. John’s Prep. School on January 7th from 9:15-4, regis-tration fees have been paid by the parish. •Family Game Day Jan. 14th from 9:30-10:45, all families welcome to join, snacks and drinks provided. Please bring a game from home to play! •Confirmation Retreat Our retreat for Confirmation students will take place on Saturday, January 27th 9am-9pm.

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The Holy Family calls us back to our roots, to a simple childlike trust in God. Joseph and Mary knew that they were entrusted with a gift, the very light of God. It is this light who is Christ who reveals to us how our family relationships, whatever form they take, are to work. He alone can bring healing to division and peace where there is discord. All we have to do is listen and find Christ. Hope and courage are often difficult to come by. The Holy Family demonstrates very clearly that all is possible with God when one puts faith in him.

Annual Parish Council Workshop The Parish Council and Finance Council will gather on Satur-day, January 6th at 9:00 a.m. at the St. John’s Guesthouse for the annual Parish Council Goal Setting Workshop. Our facili-tator will be Barbara Sutton. Please keep the Parish and Finance Councils in your prayers as they meet and make decisions for the good of our parish.
