Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 3, 2017 Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

— Romans 12:2

FOLLOWING CHRIST If you’ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God “good one—you duped me.” We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is “duping” him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God’s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter—who has just been made the foundation of the church—out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named “Satan” today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week’s Gospel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when it means following him to our very death. EDGE BEGINS 9/20 6:30 PM—8:00 PM IN PARISH HALL EDGE -7th and 8th grade Fun and Faith building! Edge is Middle School Youth Group that counts for Faith Formation. We meet Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8pm in the Parish Hall beginning in September. An average of 50-60 kids come each week (no guilt if you have a conflict) With the help of enthusiastic Teen and Adult leaders, we start with games and end with cookies. In between we grow our faith through small group sharing, playing games, and hearing brief “faith talks.” Kids get to know other middle schoolers and develop some really great friendships. Register on our website to receive emails about start dates and what Edgers will be doing. www.sttheresecarmel.org/edge Edgers are always welcome to bring friends (Catholic or not). Questions? Contact Jennifer Fry: [email protected]

Electronic giving doesn’t take vacation This summer, if you can’t make it to church due to travel or other commitments, we encourage you to automate your regular donations. St. Thérèse of Carmel relies on the consistent

financial support of the congregation and electronic giving offers an easy way to give on a recurring basis. Simply visit www.stocsd.org and locate the donation link. We thank you for your continued support!

First Reading — The name of the LORD has become like fire burning in Jeremiah’s heart (Jeremiah 20:7-9). Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading — Be transformed; renew your mind; discern what is good (Romans 12:1-2). Gospel — Those who lose their lives for Jesus’ sake will find them (Matthew 16:21-27).

RELIGION DEFINED I do not know how philosophers may ultimately define religion; but from Micah to James it has been defined as service to one’s fellow human rendered by following the great rule of justice and mercy, of wisdom and righteousness. —Theodore Roosevelt

Baptism Baptisms are held on the 4th Sunday of each month after the 11:00am Mass. Baptism is a communal Sacrament and not private. Deacon John Fanelle performs all of the baptisms. Parents are required to be formally registered as parishioners, and be participating members of our community for three months. Attending Mass does not make you registered– you must have filled out a registration form! If this is the first child, both parents are required to attend the Baptismal Class. Baptismal classes are held on the first Sunday of each month. Godparents are encouraged to attend the baptismal class, either at our parish or their own parish. To schedule a Baptism and/or register for the Baptismal Class, please contact the parish office, (858) 481-3232. Call us to register for the class. Next class - Sunday, September 3, at 7 pm

Marriage All couples wishing to be married at St. Thérèse of Carmel must be formally registered, active and participating members of our parish community for one year before setting a date. Couples are asked to allow six to nine months to complete the marriage preparation program. Please call the parish office (858)-481-3232 to make arrangements.
