Phillip spent his working life in hospitality and entertainment. He was also an established music promoter and, after a visit to Howth, Ireland in 1996, a town which held a music festival incorporating their many pubs and bars he saw a massive potential for a similar enterprise in Nantwich.
Bearing in mind that in the mid-nineties Nantwich at Easter was not exactly thriving, in fact it was almost deserted, Phillip’s idea was met with very little enthusiasm and comments such as “You want to do what ?” and “It’ll never work” were often heard. However, undaunted in his determination to fill the town with live music, with the support of a few venues and with an evening line-up in The Civic Hall the Festival was born. This proved to be a winning formula and one which grew and prevails 22 years later. A fitting testament to a man who saw an opportunity to bring us live music and made it happen.
Starting with mainly Jazz Artistes, hence the festival being known to present day as “The Nantwich Jazz”, the event grew year on year with more participation, better bands and more visitors. Phillip saw the benefit of adding the Blues Music genre to the line-ups which not only broadened the Festival’s appeal but started to gain it national recognition. Eventually the Festival opened the doors to bands from all persuasions thereby growing into it’s current incarnation of “something for everyone” .
Totally dedicated to the project, Phillip was working on the 2018 festival right to the end and what you see in Nantwich this Easter is his work. Taken on by his daughter, Abbigail and with help from the established organising team it’s success is assured. So, perhaps when you are enjoying a band and maybe a drink please reflect on Phillip. The man who made it all possible.
Steve Barnes

It is with a huge amount of pride I take this opportunity to introduce myself. The main man to thank for the music you are here to enjoy during the festival is my Dad ‘Phillip Martin’. I have very big boots to fill and will do my very best with the guidance of co-festival organiser Steve Barnes and the wonderful team that have worked so hard on the festival over the past few difficult months. My family and I will be eternally grateful for all the love and support shown to us. My father had a huge passion for music and Nantwich, with 22 years of the festival organising under his belt; this is his legacy. It was always his dream for the festival to live on and continue, so without further ado I would like to present to you ‘The 2018 Nantwich Jazz, Blues and Music Festival’ I am immensely excited to fulfil his dream and hope you can feel his enthusiasm as you soak up the music over the weekend.
Let music live on and Nantwich Jazz Festival continue.
Abbigail Ellwood
Starting the Festival on Thursday 29th March is a fabulous evening at Nantwich Civic with former Squeeze member Glenn Tilbrook in a solo performance sharing a double bill with upbeat British Blues from Nine Below Zero.Friday 30th March sees two local artistes perform with Thea Gilmore at The Civic and a special performance by Both Sides Now at The Crown Hotel who present a homage to the Joni Mitchell Songbook.A real Blues treat is on the cards for Saturday 31st March with the now annual triple bill at The Civic. Back by popular demand and with a rich Festival history, Nearly Dan take to the stage in The Studio venue in the late afternoon. Not so much a tribute but an homage to the great Steely Dan this one sells out quickly. It’s the non-stop sixties” show closes the festival.“Around the Town” goes from strength to strength. Starting (and continuing) his career in the iconic Squeeze, Glenn visits Nantwich with a not to be missed Solo appearance. Anyone who has witnessed Glenn on the live stage can attest to the properness of his doings, as it were. Armed with ready wit, raucous vibes and a shed load of grin-inducing great songs, there are few musicians able to connect with their audience on such an immediate and warm level.. Always a popular event, local musician Thea Gilmore graces the Civic Hall stage with a full band stopping off as part of her Counterweight Tour. With numerous albums and international festival appearances she began her career working in a recording studio, where she was discovered by her now long-time collaborator, producer and sometime co-songwriter Nigel Stonier Thea always presents a stunningly accomplished show sometimes challenging but always exquisite in execution her gigs are ones not to be missed.
Of all the leading lights of the West Coast singer-songwriter movement, Joni Mitchell remains its most influential figure, with a body of work running the gamut from folk to mainstream pop, right through to modern jazz and back again. Both Sides Now brings together a group of top-drawer musicians, led by singer Sarah Miller and keyboard player Aidan Goldstraw, whose devotion to Joni’s back catalogue shines through in performance. This is no mere ‘tribute act’ – it’s an evening spent together, exploring the work of a musical genius.

Dr FeelgoodFormed on Canvey Island in Essex in the early 1970s Dr. Feelgood remains one of the most popular and exciting live rhythm and blues acts in the world. The raw and uncompromising style of their performance resulted in the album Stupidity that immediately went to the number one position in the U.K. charts. Dr. Feelgood have also enjoyed global success with a string of hit singles including Roxette, Back in the Night, Milk and Alcohol, Down at the Doctors, She Does it Right, Going Back Home and See You Later Alligator - which gave the group their first gold record.
Climax Blues Band2018 is a milestone year for The Climax Blues Band as they celebrate 50 years since their formation and will be touring extensively featuring guest appearances past lineups and we’re pleased to welcome them to the festival in such a momentous year for the band. The band of today carries the same standard of quality as it did when the band formed back in the late 60s and achieved such great success and recognition through the 70s and 80s, huge selling albums like FM / Live and Gold Plated, the 1976 hit single Couldn’t Get It Right (from Gold plated) and I Love You in 1981.
Walklate & FuschiMat and Paolo are an “Electric Blues Duo” from Manchester. They use old tube amplifiers creating a rich tone that roots their sound in the very early days of amplified Blues. The result is a magical performance that stands out for its intensity and energy. Although there are two people on stage, they sound like a 10 piece Blues band. Living in Manchester and strongly influenced by its Afro-Caribbean community, Mat and Paolo also pay homage to Ska, blending its uplifting rhythms with the spirit and sentiment of the Blues.

Nantwich Civic Hall – Sunday 1st April
Having earned a reputation of being the best entertainers around for over 20 years, the Jive Aces have truly established themselves as the UK’s top jive and swing band. They are considered one of the hardest working bands in the business with over 300 shows a year and touring all year long from one corner to another of the globe. Their music is played regularly on BBC Radio 2, they have appeared on the BBC’s People’s Strictly, had a six page feature in the nationally distributed “Vintage Rock” magazine and have an upcoming appearance again this year at Glastonbury. Support from local rockabilly heroes. Definitely a night for the dancers !
It’s said that if you remember the 60’s you weren’t there! Strange then that these 60’s artists are among the best remembered artists of all time. Who could forget hits such as, ‘The Crying Game’, ‘Mama’ and ‘Little Things’ from Dave Berry, ‘Twist & Shout’, ‘Do You Love Me’ & ‘Candyman’ from Brian Poole, ‘Hitchin a Ride’, ‘Early in the Morning’ & ‘I Live For The Sun’ from Vanity Fare, and the unforgettable voice of Mike Pender from The Searchers on ‘Sweets For My Sweets’, ‘Needles & Pins’, and ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’. Surely, a show to remember from the ORIGINAL stars of the 60’s.
