The Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 11, 2016

RECONCILIATION

True reconciliation is emotional, dramatic, and cleansing.

When two people meet heart to heart and work through

old hurts, misunderstandings, and careless words, cleans-

ing tears often flow and the encounter ends with an em-

brace that fills both with the warmth of a love too strong

to fade.

The readings this weekend assure us of this

healthy release that comes with reconciliation. They give

us the courage to reach out to someone with whom we

need to reconcile ourselves, and give us the courage to

ask for forgiveness from God, too.

In the reading from Exodus, we see how God re-

fuses again and again to give up on the Israelites. Even

though they grow impatient with God and turn to false

idols, God still calls them back. Luke’s Gospel assures us

that God rejoices when we turn away from sin. Paul’s

letter to Timothy encourages us, like Paul, to look back

on our lives and recognize where God’s patient mercy

has been shown to us.

PRAYER CHAIN REQUESTS We want to remind people to feel free to use the parish prayer lines when needs arise in your family in difficult times of testing and trial. Email [email protected] or call Rita Burges at 364-6766. Contacts are listed on the back of the weekly church bulletin. You must first have the permission of the patient or of a close family member who can speak for that person in need; you may use either their full name OR no name at all. It is also hoped that if the prayer line is being used anonymously, the caller inform our Pastor Father Tony so he can come to anoint or

administer the Sacrament of Healing when needed and to know who among the flock to keep in his daily prayer. Thank you and May God Bless you!

From the desk of our pastor, Father Tony Neusch.

This week in my short column instead of looking at the readings I would like to reflect on one of the most important supports our parish offers, namely education in the faith. We begin faith formation classes this week. Children will be entrusted again to teachers to help them develop and deepen a relationship with Jesus Christ. Let me offer a couple of thoughts that keep rattling around in my brain.

I tend to spend a lot of time in my head. In fact if you accused me of seeing the world from the shoul-ders up, I would have to agree with you. I like learning and knowing and introspection, not everyone does. There is an inherent danger in this type of worldly approach, namely that when things don’t fall into a carefully constructed set of categories, and they often don’t, being lost on the immensity of the sea of thought and abstraction become reality. More recently I have tried to put into practice a better type of world view. The wrestling mat is a much more appropriate approach to belief in God. Wrestling with God and all that that entails means that some ideas will pin us to the mat in ways that no matter our struggle we cannot break free. Sometimes the will of God will be so overwhelming, so true, or so strong that we will always be outmatched. If our life in Christ never feels like an uphill battle, or swimming against the current, or being placed in the wrong weight class, then we aren’t doing it right.

I have been trying to find again the number of Catholics around the world who do not have access to weekly Mass. With all the technology at my fingertips I couldn’t or least as of writing these ramblings I haven’t been able. I can’t figure out the right question to ask in order to get the desired result. If the questions aren’t right the answers won’t be either. Are we teaching the right questions? Are we living the right questions? I know the frustration of not knowing the correct string of words to get the result of data that I think I need. How many of our parish’s school children and their parents have authentic holy desires that the questions and answers don’t lead to a sacramental life in the church?

Finally, why is everything different? If I had married as a young man, had a family my children could possibly be seniors in high school even freshmen in college. In that thought experiment I can’t imagine raising children today, and yet people do it all the time. In the 22 years since I graduated from High School the world has changed. In that time the United States has had experiences of both domestic and international acts of terrorism, there have been war as a result. We have seen more and more family farms sold, mass urban migration, and tremendous immigration. Catholic religious practice has dimin-ished, while at the same numbers have grown. Why is everything different? Because, that is just the way it is. Sameness is a complete illusion everything is always changing and we change with it, some-times in radical other times in subtle ways.

If you made it this far in my ramblings congratulations, I almost didn’t. I guess what I am trying to say is that we are not going to be able to always provide a safe relationship with God. Belief in Him is the most danger-ous thing we do. If we aren’t taught how to ask the most important questions then we will never find the most im-portant answers. To live is to change, to live as a Catholic Christian is to become more and more Christ like every single day. If our parents and catechist can teach our young people how to wrestle with God, to ask the right ques-tions, and to be changed into the image of Christ on Earth, then we have it made in the shade.
