4 The Tulln Experience
Tulln, a fun-Loving Water CityThe diversity of water ways and
landscapes make Tulln a recreational
paradise: from the fun filled Aubad
riverside baths to the idyllic Water
Park with Danube’s many side-
arms and natural pools, from an ad-
venturous canoe outing to a romantic
boat ride under a full moon. One
unique feature of Tulln is that the
Danube River, with the beautifully
landscaped Donaulände promenade,
is just a short distance from the lively
center of the city.
Refreshing You notice it immediately strolling
along the Donaulände promenade:
Tulln seems to be drawn to the water.
Water landscapes are an integral part
of the city. The intertwining waterways
of the Water Park are a good example.
They are best explored in canoes or
pedal boats. The 30-hectare Aubad is
another large riverside recreational
area quite close to its natural state.
Artistic & culinary Walking along the Donaulände
promenade, visitors cannot help but
notice two triggering water vessels. One
is the Regentag, a legendary ship that
served for ten years as the main living
quarters of the 20th century Austrian
artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
It is open to the public. The other is
the MS Stadt Wien, a paddle steamer
serving culinary delights on board for
a bit of “high-seas dining”.

It is Europe’s largest river stage lending a special atmosphere to the concerts held here on balmy summer evenings.
High-caliber concerts A unique calendar of musical events featuring something for every taste is offered every year. Top international and Austrian stars perform here from June through August. Many of the events are free of charge and a welcome opportunity for passers-by to stop and linger for a while.

The year is 1896. A lanky boy is sitting at a window in the
Tulln train station painting locomotives and trains. A few
years later he will have become the star of Vienna Modernism.
The boy is Egon Schiele, Tulln’s most famous native son!
Birthplace of an International Artist The apartment in the main train station where Egon
Schiele was born on June 12, 1890, transports you
back to the artist’s childhood in a walk-through
exhibition. Upon entering the authentically
furnished rooms, you immediately immerse
yourself in the domestic life of a late 19th
century family.
modern media to Unlock the Past A variety of different media sheds light on the Schiele family’s
history, from the artist’s protected childhood to the family’s tragic
social decline. Modern art education media such as audio stations
are combined here with authentic 19th century surroundings.
Hi Egon!
Besides the birthplace,
visitors encounter Tulln’s
internationally renowned artist
in places they might not expect.

visitors to places of relevance

Along with Schiele’s birthplace, Tulln has also opened the
Egon Schiele Museum to honor its most famous resident.
The museum has about 60 oil paintings, water colors and
drawings from Schiele’s early periods of creativity, namely,
his childhood in Tulln and years as a secondary school stu-
dent in Klosterneuburg as well as his studies at the Academy
of Fine Arts in Vienna and the founding of the Neukunst-
gruppe in 1909.
Egon Delectables:After a visit to the Schiele Museum

Roman museum As you watch the hustle and bustle on the Hauptplatz in Tulln,
it is interesting to note that people were already scurrying
across this main square 2,000 years ago. The Roman Museum
in Marcus Aurelius Park can help to trigger your imagination.
Austrian Sugar museumThe Agrana sugar factory has been in Tulln since 1937; reason
enough for the art city, to have its own sugar museum as well!
In this, Austria’s sweetest museum, visitors can trace the deve-
lopment of sugar production from cane sugar mills to modern
sugar factories.

14 The Tulln Experience
Genuine Gardening ExpertsHowever, this huge horticultural show and GARTEN TULLN are not the
only reasons for Tulln’s reputation as a garden city. Local nurseries and
garden centers in and around Tulln have also played a big role. First-class
service and glorious blooming plants can be had at all Tulln nurseries
and garden centers, florists and shops, large and small. Starkl and
Parskac are two major garden centers known far beyond the region.
They are the perfect places to shop for flowers yet also offer green at-
tractions such as the magnificent show garden in Frauenhofen Castle
Park and PrasKatz, a colorful flower sculpture nine meters high.
Tulln as a Center of Horticultural Expertise
Internationale Gartenbaumesse Every year the city of gardens becomes even more greener and fragrant for four days at the end of August. Tulln plays host to the
„Internationale Gartenbaumesse“, the biggest flower show in Europe and a favorite arena for garden experts from around the globe.
This event in Tulln attracts everyone, from professional and amateur gardeners to those who simply want to admire the well-tended
parks and gardens.
The Tulln Experience 15
For Tulln, sustainability is more than just a fleeting catchphrase.
In 2007, Tulln became the first city in Lower Austria to initiate
natural management of public parks and garden spaces. The color-
ful appearance of the city is further enhanced by the well-tended
gardens and yards of local residents.
Livable Green Community Tulln has been honored twice with the “Entente Florale”
gold medal as one of Europe’s most beautiful floral cities.
Tulln was also awarded the “International Award for
Livable Communities.” Those are far from all the
accolades Tulln has received for its green parks
and gardens and ecological life style!

16 The Tulln Experience
Traditional meets modern
From the medieval city tower to the
high-tech university campus, from the
late Baroque Minorite Church to the
newly redone main square, Tulln offers
a fascinating mix that makes us curious
about its past, present and future. Tulln
is the oldest city in Austria thanks to its
location directly on the Danube. Even the
ancient Romans saw the clear advantage
of this site. Calvary troops stationed at
the Roman fort of Comagena protected
the Noric Limes and controlled the
strategically important ford well into the
4th century AD.
memorableTulln still has many monuments to golden
eras in the past. Their preservation can be
attributed to the local citizens’ sense of
tradition and civic pride. The residents of
Tulln take an active part in new projects
but also hang on to the tried and tested.
The Hauptplatz is a good example.
Following its makeover, this historical
main square and “living room” of locals
is an intriguing mix of the traditional and
the modern.
Earth-shattering From the 11th century onward, Tulln once
again took center stage in international
events. The Babenbergs made the city
their official residence. Tulln flourished
as a trade center and was even mentioned
in the Song of the Nibelungs, a famous
German epic written around 1200. The
Nibelung Monument reminds us of this
fact.
