The Coalition to Revitalize Walter H. Dyett High School has been fighting to save this southside school, and upgrade the curriculum to reflect a school of excellence, focusing our children on Global Leadership and Green Technology. While Chicago Public Schools has re-opened the school, the community’s demands have not been met! No community proposal has been examined or considered for Dyett. This is a false victory designed to appease the community and remove this issue from of the press. It is good that Mayor Emanuel has committeed to re-open Dyatt, but it is critical that CPS accepts the community’s blueprint for a school of excellence.

The fight continues...

Trinity UCC stands with Dyett, the Students, the Parents, and Our Community.

Unison Scripture

RoMAnS 7:14-25 (niV)14We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

21So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed – even our own Black brothers and sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your Name the praise forevermore.

******

To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and may God bless you.

All: Lord, give success to the work of our hands.

Minister: For those who work in hazardous conditions without sufficient protection, let us pray…

All: Lord, give success to the work of our hands.

Minister: For migrant workers and all who work the land, let us pray…

All: Lord, give success to the work of our hands.

Minister: For all employers that they may seek to provide a just work environment…

All: Lord, give success to the work of our hands.

Minister: For those who face discrimination, harassment, or abuse in the work place, let us pray…

All: Lord, give success to the work of our hands.

Minister: For those who must balance job commitments with the needs of their family, let us pray…

All: Lord, give success to the work of our hands.

Minister: Loving God, through your Son you gave us an example to love one another as he loved us. Give us the strength to continue working to bring forth your kingdom here on earth – a kingdom of justice and peace, kindness and compassion, grace and mercy. Grant this through Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

Pastor's PageLast week, we looked at the Epistle to the church in Rome, written by Paul. As we explored the subject of sin and grace, we discovered the doctrine of sin in the western church (European church) has altered our understanding of sin.

The word, “sin” as described by Paul in Greek is hamartia. This word is drawn from the martial art of archery, meaning to “miss the mark.” Paul spoke of sin, not as an act, but as a condition all human beings must face. The doctrine of the western church (European) sees sin as an act, allowing for a hierarchy of sin. The western church made money on this concept known as “indulgences,” or a “sin pass”; if you paid the church, priest, or bishop money, you received a certificate that allowed you to be absolved of your sin.

The American Evangelical emphasis on attacking individual people, whether Black, women, gay, or immigrant, is rooted in the idea of seeing sin as an act, versus a condition; we are all afflicted. It is the African theologian, St. Augustine, who describes sin as a condition in his seminal work, “The Confessions.”

· Sin is a condition

· Grace is the nature of God

When we recognize sin as a condition equally distributed to all, and not an act, we cease to live in judgment, trying to elevate our life and reduce the actions, activity, and viability of other people. We are all recipients of grace, the unmerited favor of God; grace cannot be earned, but it is given. It is through faith we come into contact with Christ and humbled by this extraordinary radical act known as grace. One writer states, “Grace is the act of love, stooping low…” We all have the condition (sin) and we are all saved through grace from our God, demonstrated through the person of Jesus Christ.

Chicago First Ladies Health Initiative Health Screening Day

Sunday, September 27, 2015 “Take Time to Take Care” and learn important information about your health during the Seventh Annual Walgreens First Ladies Health Day on Sunday, September 27th, from (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) Our First Lady, Mrs. Monica Moss, will join nearly 50 First Ladies around Chicagoland who will simultaneously open their churches to host a full day of FREE life-saving health screenings. Hundreds of health providers are volunteering their time to administer tests to detect high blood pressure, diabetes, breast cancer, Hepatitis C, HIV, and other serious illnesses. This year, the First Ladies have developed an historic partnership! BioLytical Laboratories has donated 800 Rapid 60-second HIV tests to the First Ladies Health Initiative. With those tests, we are embarking on a ground-breaking faith-based program where for every HIV test that is given during the Health Day, one will be donated to the Bishop Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in South Africa! Come take a test and give one to someone who desperately needs the information and power to take control over their health. Free screenings for both men and women will be available. Medical tests will be administered and will take place prior to and following church services. “Take Time to Take Care” on Sunday, September 27th during the First Ladies Health Day, and bring a friend. Everyone is welcome! For more information, visit www.FirstLadiesHealth.com

#AchievingWhileBlack

This “Back-to-School” moment in time may indeed be the most significant in the history of Black people.

Case in point: In 2013, we celebrated the 50th

anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington; in 2014, we observed the 50-year commemoration of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; this past month marked 50 years since the Voting Act of 1965. But the lesser known 128th anniversary of the birth of Marcus Garvey, who, during Jim Crow laws and segregation started the first major movement to improve the lives of millions of Blacks in America, could arguably be the most relevant to date.

Garvey, under the tutelage of his mentor, Booker T. Washington, believed Blacks would advance not through politics but by leveraging education, hard work, and self-help. In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, those very same ideals are experiencing a great renaissance among a new generation of youth advocating Black power and intolerance of African Americans killed and incarcerated at abominable rates.

The 13 mentees from the White House Initiative, My Brother’s Keeper, accompanying the President in the photo above are, like millions of black and brown kids across the country, beneficiaries of the past and positioned to be change agents for the future. Still, history remains integral to the resistance of the status quo because there is ample reason why our children are trained, but not properly educated: Knowledge is power. In our case, Black power and the photo serves as metaphors to the truism that power in no way is relegated to just the President.

Yesterday is history. Please join Endeleo at the
