RESPONSE- 26th Dec 2004Affected States/ UTs contacted and ground situation ascertained. A&N Islands were contacted through IDS OPS room.Government initiates relief operations through Armed Forces in States & UTs and also sends support to Sri Lanka. Subsequently to Maldives and Indonesia too.Safety and Security of Kalapakkam Atomic Power Plant ensured. 28,734 persons were rescued- 9950 in Kerala, 9284 in A & N Islands, and 9500 in TN including 1000 persons stranded at Vivekanand Memorial.
6.45 lakhs persons – Main Land (6.30 lakhs) and A&N Island (0.15 lakhs) moved to safer places
Civil Aviation operated 64 special flights between 27th Dec 2004 - 1 Jan 2005 to evacuate 6,318 stranded people including tourists from A&N Islands.

Crisis Management Group under Cabinet Secretary activated at 1040 hrs on 26th December 2004. Meets at 1300 hrs. Thereafter daily meetings.
Cabinet meets on 27th Dec at 1700hrs. – reviews situation and constitutes GoM under Prime Minister
GoM meets on 28th and regularly thereafter.
