What happens without TV, computers, email, Facebook, Twitter, smart phones, or any kind of electronic distraction? What that left was….time. There was time to go for walks, to explore lakes, rivers and bays with our kayaks, and to swim in the surprisingly warm (for Canada) ocean. There was no need to rush anywhere. There were no deadlines to meet or obligations to fulfill. I’m not sure any of us realize just how much time we spend looking at screens of one type or another. When that was taken away, we found that had time to spend more than an hour gazing at the night sky, amazed at the beauty of the Milky Way and in awe of the vast array of stars that sparkled overhead. There was time to rest, read, write, reflect, and enjoy the beauty all around us. God’s voice can seem clearer without all the outside commotion. There was time to marvel at the beauty of endless potato blossoms (who knew that they looked and smelled! so beautiful?). There was time to watch, really watch, a butterfly dipping into a flower, a bird diving into the ocean, and the wind making patterns on the water. Vacations come to an end and summer days slip away. Computers must be turned on again and I find myself checking my phone more often than I really care to. So the question is how, during the busy fall months, can we hold onto the peace and renewal that God surely wants us to have? I have two suggestions. Try to find some “Sabbath moments” during the week – a time when you can be aware of God’s presence and feed your spirit. What helps you be aware of God? What moves you to gratitude? Make time for those moments because otherwise they will be swallowed up by endless demands or the enticing glow of multiple screens. And make time for worship. Feed your spirit by joining us on Sunday mornings. Give yourself the gift of time to praise God with music, Scripture, silence and fellowship. God always invites us into God’s presence. Let’s not be too busy to spend some time with God who loves us and offers us support. Even as the seasons change, let us be aware of God who is faithful yesterday, today, and forever. The TRUMPET

September 2016

Keep the summer with you

And we’re off! With Labor Day coming up, it

seems like we are all poised in the starting blocks, ready to

jump into our busy schedules. School busses are running

again. The Woodstock Fair is quickly approaching. And

the calendars? We must reluctantly turn the page from

sunny August to stressful September. We know what can happen – we talk about “getting

back in the routine” and “getting into the swing of things”

but if we are not careful, our days, hours, and minutes will

once again be overbooked and crowded with obligations.

Sometimes we like to be busy but we can also yearn for

some of the carefree moments of summer. My summer memories include three glorious

computer-free weeks. It started on the schooner retreat

aboard the Lewis R. French as we enjoyed the beauty of

God’s creation off the coast of Maine. That ‘unplugged’

time continued as Roger and I celebrated our 25th

anniversary with a 2-week camping trip in Prince Edward

Island and Nova Scotia. What happens without TV, computers, email,

Facebook, Twitter, smart phones, or any kind of electronic

distraction? What that left was….time. There was time to

go for walks, to explore lakes, rivers and bays with our

kayaks, and to swim in the surprisingly warm (for Canada)

ocean. There was no need to rush anywhere. There were

no deadlines to meet or obligations to fulfill. I’m not sure any of us realize just how much time

we spend looking at screens of one type or another. When

that was taken away, we found that had time to spend more

than an hour gazing at the night sky, amazed at the beauty

of the Milky Way and in awe of the vast array of stars that

sparkled overhead. There was time to rest, read, write,

reflect, and enjoy the beauty all around us. God’s voice

can seem clearer without all the outside commotion. There

was time to marvel at the beauty of endless potato

blossoms (who knew that they looked – and smelled! – so

beautiful?). There was time to watch, really watch, a

butterfly dipping into a flower, a bird diving into the

ocean, and the wind making patterns on the water. Vacations come to an end and summer days slip

away. Computers must be turned on again and I find

myself checking my phone more often than I really care to. So the question is – how, during the busy fall

months, can we hold onto the peace and renewal that God

surely wants us to have? I have two suggestions. Try to find some “Sabbath

moments” during the week – a time when you can be

aware of God’s presence and feed your spirit. What helps

you be aware of God? What moves you to gratitude? Make

time for those moments – because otherwise they will be

swallowed up by endless demands or the enticing glow of

multiple screens. And – make time for worship. Feed your spirit by

joining us on Sunday mornings. Give yourself the gift of

time to praise God with music, Scripture, silence and

fellowship. God always invites us into God’s presence. Let’s

not be too busy to spend some time with God who loves us

and offers us support. Even as the seasons change, let us

be aware of God who is faithful yesterday, today, and

forever. Yours in Christ,

Everyone is welcome!

The Jamboree Committee is so thankful to everyone who made the Jamboree one of the most remarkable events for the surrounding community and beyond. It is the ONLY way to celebrate the 4th of July. The 60th Jamboree created many extraordinary moments for those who attended and the

success of this event could not happen without the hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm of our congregation. The fellowship and hospitality offered to our guests showed they were welcome and we were glad they came to celebrate the day with us. Once again, thank you for helping to make memories and traditions that will never be forgotten. See you next year!

Jim Graley and Lynn Looby, Co-Chairs, Grace Harmon, Bev Tracy, and Judith Wong

Attic Treasures Thank You:

To our incredible Jamboree Attic Treasures team, and ALL those who supported this year's

special 60th

Anniversary event:

Millions of thanks for your time, talents, and support! Once again we hosted a record crowd of guests

at our Attic Treasures tables – and I’m delighted to say we doubled our pre-event sales and TOPPED

OUR SALES RECORD ONCE AGAIN as we collected over $4500 in 8 hours – just extraordinary!

In addition, we continue to sell some of our special items through eBay, so we’re approaching the

$5K mark soon!

My thanks goes out to our many loyal and new Attic Treasures volunteers who put in countless hours to

sort, wash, polish, price, set up, sell, wrap, collect payments, and pack up. Additional thanks to all who

donated a wonderful array of treasures – from collectors’ items to household necessities - and to all who

took the time to check out and purchase our treasures – even while chairing other booths and activities!

You ALL played a very important role in our Jamboree, and in Attic Treasures! YOU made a big

difference!

Involvement in the Jamboree and Attic Treasures offers the opportunity to make new friends and re-

connect with old friends. I hope you savored the camaraderie, enjoyed the inner rewards of working

together for what matters to us as a Church, and celebrated our independence at what was THE place to

be on July 4th

!

Many thanks again for your enthusiasm, humor, hard work, and friendship!

With gratitude,

Judith Wong

Our church is blessed by the work of many volunteers.

Every bit of effort and caring helps the church live out

its calling to be the Body of Christ. This month we

especially would like to thank . . .

Ben Gould, Sarah Jo Burke, and Paul Lynn

for sharing their musical talents as we enjoyed

Tuesdays at Twilight in Roseland Park. Listening to

your lovely music as we looked out on the beautiful

water was a wonderful way to worship.

Anne Sorensen and all the many volunteers who made possible yet another successful week of

Compassion Camp! The combination of community

service and fun fellowship takes a lot of time and effort

to coordinate. Thank you for continuing to make this a

special week for the campers!

Sherry Magnan, Dawn Morin, Angela

Young, Lynn Looby, Louise Labbe-Fahy,

Kim Robida and our many volunteers for presenting

a wonderful week of Vacation Bible School. Music,

games, Bible stories, good food, and fellowship made

this a fun and active week!

Robin Cartee, for donating the flower boxes on the

chapel steps. They add a nice pop of color and

welcome to our entry.

Feel free to share your news with us. Just email

Heidi at [email protected] or call the church

office at 928-7449.

Congratulations to Ashley Morin and Nick Rebello who were married on June 11th and to

Jessica Parker and Chris Dunn who were married on July 9th. We wish them many blessings as they begin their lives together!

GOOD GRIEF GROUP for children and teenagers

Fall 2016 Series Tuesdays | October 4

th-November 8th | 5:45 – 7:15 PM

Christ Church | Route 169 | Pomfret, CT

The group consists of the following: 5:45 p.m. – 6:20 p.m. Supper (donated by local restaurants) while families arrive 6:20 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Opening ceremony for all family and staff 6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Age appropriate group activity. Adults have own group session. 7:00 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. Sharing of activity and closing ceremony for all family and staff.

Registration is required before the first meeting. A supportive adult MUST accompany the child.

Please note: You did not have to be on the hospice program to be involved in this group. This is a community program and all are welcome after the registration process. However, due to the preparation, volunteer involvement, structure of the program and obvious trusting/sharing issues, we close attendance in to this group after the second week.

ABOUT GOOD GRIEF GROUP The Good Grief Group consists of school age children/teens (ages 5-16) that have had a loss through death. If the death that occurred was violent or tragic in nature, this is not the appropriate group for children to attend. We will help you with a referral to a counselor so the child(ren) may get the proper help that is needed. We do not provide crisis counseling or individual counseling in this group format. For the best support of the children and family members, it should be at least 3 months since the death occurred. This is a family bereavement service and an adult must accompany each child/teenager.

The goal of the Good Grief Group is to let children/teens know that they are not alone in their grief and that it is alright if they feel sad and cry. We will attempt to teach the children/teen how to deal with their grief/emotions in healing ways by involving them in age appropriate group activities such as memory boxes and collages. The group also teaches that there is support for them at home as well as in the community. We try to make it safe for them to talk and share, if they choose, stressing confidentiality in the group as a way of feeling safe.

There will be two facilitators of the group along with at least 6 volunteers (depending on the size of the group) who have been trained in children’s bereavement and in children’s support groups.

If you would like more information on this group, please call Suzon Warner, LPN/Bereavement Coordinator at (860) 928-0422 or 1 (800) 664-2442 ext. 2042.

Today and every day let us be open to God, who promises always to be with us.

Grant, O God, Your protection;

And in protection, strength;

And in strength, understanding;

And in understanding, knowledge;

And in knowledge, the knowledge of justice;

And in knowledge of justice, the love of it;

And in that love, the love of all existences;

And in the love of all existences, the love of God.

God and all goodness.

May the strength of God pilot us.

May the power of God preserve us.

May the wisdom of God instruct us.

May the hand of God protect us.

May the way of God direct us.

May the shield of God defend us.

May the host of God guard us against the snares

of evil and the temptations of the world.

May Christ be with us.

Christ be above us.

Christ be in us.

Christ be before us.

May our salvation O Lord, be always ours this

day and for evermore.

Amen.
