How are Utilities becoming smarter? What are
utilities doing to become smarter?
What technologies, systems operations, and
new business models are enabling this jump in
intelligence?
How has the influx of the renewable energy tech-
nologies into the energy market pushed utilities
to evolve?
Are some renewable technologies more
important than others?
What are the key infrastructure ‘sweet spots’
for grid modernization that will allow utilities to
become more intelligent?
Are utilities truly willing participants in their own
evolution or is their change being forced on
them from without?
The modern utility is transforming. The utility of the
past was resistant to change, committed to broad
sweeping controls, and weighed down with heavy regu-
lations while the transformed utility is a more flexible,
data wielding, and consumer conscious body that will
not only change how utilities interface with their con-
sumer, but the electricity distribution market across the
board.
On February 20th, at Agrion’s Energy & Sustainability
Summit, PSE&G CEO Ralph Izzo announced a new
effort on the part of the New Jersey Utility to invest
$4 billion in grid infrastructure upgrades that would
increase the utility’s ability to collect data, respond to
natural disasters, and provide increased reliability in
the face of not just unforeseen catastrophic events,
but also anticipated market changes. This is just one
way in which a utility is changing to the times and
becoming more flexible in the face of the demand for
a flexible utility. This roundtable will look at the other
methods in which utilities are changing and adapting
as they become more open, endorse a wider range of
technologies on the grid, and become an aid, not a
hindrance, to the integration of renewable energy onto
the grid.
