(John 12:26) September is the time for us to return to following our fall schedules. Students and teachers return to the classroom, parents and grandparents adjust to fall activities, while Sunday school and Church programming begins anew. We all follow the fall schedule, from the first day of school to enjoying the cooler weather at our local fairs and festivals. But Jesus challenges us to a deeper kind of following this season-- following him. "If anyone serves me, he must follow me," Jesus says. What can following mean, except for staying close to, walking right behind, staying connected to, learning from, depending upon, and listening to him? This is how we serve Christ: by following him in obedient faith, by staying close to him and knowing his closeness to us through thick and thin. For we are promised that in following him in faith, we will both find him, and find and serve him in others. More than that, in following we're promised that we won't ever be separated from him, that our relationship will continue forever, so that we'll always be where Christ is! This call to follow is to each of us individually, and yet it's not something we can do alone. The source of our Christian life is in our Sunday worship together, as we gather each Sunday at 10:15 a.m. to hear God's Word and receive his sacraments. " Follow me," Jesus says, and we begin following together on Sundays, and continue following and serving him all week long in the many places God has put us. Come and follow anew this fall! Rally Sunday is September 11th, with the First Day of Sunday School. We'll have a Holy Smokes cookout September 11th too, with hot dogs and kielbasa provided! So follow in worship. Follow by dropping in for Bible study, or dropping your kids off for Sunday School. Follow by offering your own special gifts to him and to others, all week long. Seafarers International House It is hard to believe that summer is already coming to an end. How can it be, it seems like just last week it was the 4th of July. It has been a very HOT summer, but I don’t have to tell you that. Even down at the port there was rarely a cooling breeze, but ships continued to come in and out. The M/V K Coral arrived for a very short visit with a crew of Korean and Filipino seafarers. Ten seafarers met me at the gangway waiting to go shopping. The Korean Captain had it all planned; they would all go and eat, make a stop at Best Buy and then go to BJ’s to shop for provisions, enough to get them to Houston. Showing them all the food choices they had at Exit 9 in North Haven, they decided on Buffalo Wild Wings. The Captain insisted that I must eat with them as they were having a celebration. After the Captain ordered a sampling of offerings from the menu (several hamburgers listed at over 1800 calories) they settled in to enjoy a beer and tell me about their dramatic and heroic rescue of 19 Chinese and Indonesian fishermen from their burning vessel 900 nm off the southeast of Bermuda. The K Coral noticed smoke on the horizon and diverted their course to find a fishing boat on fire with people in the water. The search and rescue lasted for 12 hours through the night and deteriorating weather conditions. The Captain said that he was not going to stop searching until the last man had been found. Of the men rescued 3 had been badly burned and 1 later died. The Captain was

very proud of his crew. He said that they train all their life for something like this but always hope that they never have to put their training into practice.

After a stop at Best Buy we moved over to BJ’s and loaded up basket after basket with meat, fresh vegetables and fruit, bread and eggs. The Captain paid for these items and found that he still had some of his food allotment money left over so again they went back and loaded up on snacks, nuts, chocolates and cookies and again they went to buy more. We had a van fully loaded with good things and I knew they would eat well heading to Houston. In August, the SIH Chaplains drove to Portsmouth, VA to attend the annual North American Maritime Ministry Association Conference. Almost 100 Chaplains from around the world gathered to hear about the issues facing seafarers, the maritime industry and seafarer centers today. The Conference’s focus was on “Being Present: Social Isolation at Sea”. We heard from many speakers from the whole spectrum of the maritime industry speaking about the depression, illnesses and even suicides caused by the isolation many of these seafarers feel at sea. I have found that on a ship with 20 crew that there are seafarers who don’t even know each other and Captains who don’t even know the names of his own crew. They basically work, eat and sleep in shifts and then go back to work again. We often find that a seafarer needs a listening ear, someone that will just spend some time with him and just listen, say a prayer with him or give a hug. And then we have ships like the Plover Arrow, one of the largest, beamiest ships I have ever seen in New Haven, here 40r 5 days unloading steel products. From early morning until late evening, seafarers took advantage of being able to go to shore to shop, to eat, to relax. Each time we returned

the men carried many bags and boxes up the gangway and I really had a good laugh when on the last trip back before departure, one of them told me how much they had

enjoyed their stay here BUT “never enough time, never enough money”. How true, how true! Thank you, Ute, for getting up early and having cookies in the oven by 7AM on hot, hot mornings. Your cookies have been enjoyed by many, thank you, Vern, for all the playing cards, than you all for your donations from Christmas-at-Sea in July, for magazines and all the other things I find in my box in the narthex. I hope you enjoy each month hearing about this wonderful ministry as much as I enjoy serving our maritime community. And continue to get the word out that 90% of all we have here comes to us on a ship manned by seafarers far away from their homes and family. Ruth Setaro, Chaplain
